    I have switched over to working in the Unity engine.

    The great wall of map spam will stop.

    Your Astral plane reminds me of Ultima 8's Etheral Plane.

    • Have you given any thought to gameplay in these? That is, objectives and missions, encounter design with enemies, gameplay flow, NPCs, pacing, etc.?
    Gameplay is Xcom with mages/units (that's the plan). My first character has entered Unity with a map today.
    • Similarly, many of these areas look kinda non-practical from a design perspective. For example, I see a lot of long straight corridors with a few turns and alcoves. I see a lot of use of symmetry in order to make these look pretty but not really with respect to level design.
    Agree I will be working with maybe 2-4 maps now for the demo.
    • Where are all the interactive objects and visual clutter in the levels? They're very cool and creative but do not look remotely lived-in.
    Selecting the short list of 2-4 maps at the moment.
    • Some areas are a bit strange perspective-wise. Here it looks like the camera angle for the foreground and background are totally different, for instance.
    • I notice a lot of environment reuse. It seems like you are taking the same base objects and changing backgrounds a bit. Any plans to work on this?
    Reuse was done just to get the ideas down as fast as possible so I could go to sleep some nights :).
    Limited time to work with for my own personal targets.

    If a new take on Kuldahar shows up my life will be complete.
    One of the bases you can select will look like Kuldahar (think xcom 1994 base).
    My dream game is to merge Master of Magic/ Xcom with Ice wind Dale art.
    That is basically the goal and the fuel in the fire.

    A creative challenge that is worth it.

    Going to give it a red hot go this year (I have a plan).
    Worst case scenario is I will release the maps for modders.

    I don't want to take the role of the lead programmer/Developer (this means my coding/unity development will suck).
    The position I want to take is Co-designer (with the lead coder), Lead Artist. But I need to build enough of the game to a certain level that customers can get a feel for the game (and the potential team). Doing this out of a garage with a budget based on loose change is well a challenge.

    Also my work (pays my bills/feeds my family) has delayed my holidays by 4 weeks.

    Now onto Test 1.

    Yes a game about some dude walking on a picture.
    Run and walk just like in Plane Scape Torment!

    Unity Test 1.

    Left mouse button is for walk (works).
    Right mouse button is for run but it makes the Unity menu pop up (Bug/fail).

    Primary objective

    * Clipping Solution required for the character to map relationship
    * The map thingy data to say he can't walk on water or over the wall etc...

    Bling wish list objective (yes art does sell I mean X no wine ....)
    * Add character shadows
    * Snow Particles
    * puffy Clouds
    * Water animations

    Later on
    * Two characters fighting in turn based combat over access to the portal of infinite Fruit Box cask wine.
    * Worthy cause noted

    The path to K2.
    If I keep at it I might get my grass right in the next few days.
    I painted some in but I am going to switch over to 3D grass/PS editing drink lots of wine technique.

    Oh bugger I spotted like 5 errors.
    Time is up for today off to work.

    And so it begins.

    Some people pitch to start.
    Some will pitch to complete the journey.
    My journey has only begun at 120 prototype maps.
    The quest continues.

    The grass in the last screen looks pretty good to me, the only thing that bothers me is the snow. I actually had a hard time figuring out what it is, maybe because it looks more like chrome spray-paint on a rock than actual snow. It lacks some volume/depth imho.

    That's just me being nitpicky but I do love your style and hope we'll see more, good luck with Unity :)

    Yes, try to get some subsurface scattering in the snow, for the soft bluish tonal changes. A soft environmental side light might do the trick as well, to imply bounced light from the sky.

    Looks awesome, but you're a madman to make all this content before figuring out how the mechanical stuff will work.

    If it's supposed to be light snow, it looks fine. The grass is what looks off to me. Like green rocks.

    Yes I am a madman on a mission.

    When I figure out how to fix something like the snow (or my bane the grass) its a pretty good feeling.
    The new plan is to stay on one map set until I figure out my level of arty perfection.

    damn your whole project is pretty amazing, i don't know if somebody asked before, but are the lights baked or realtime rendered?
    Just noticed it might be dead, too bad, it looks really good :/
