Admit it people, you never thought consoles would lose the PC vs consoles war by being slowly transformed into PCs themselves while still being called consoles.

They were never and never will be PCs. As long as they will use their own API, systems, hardware design they won't be PC.
And both of those consoles have custom designed hardware that you can't buy for your or mine PC. They are as PC as every other console before.

Closest to being PC was original Xbox which used just straight PC parts without any mods. Just everything on one mainboard. Still it used API which was different than DirectX.

Today consoles even with teh"x86" arch are as far from PCs as PS2 or Nintendo64. Aside for common therms used for naming parts in both machines architecture beside them is radically different in parts and that arch is yet to come for PCs and devs still probably are getting accustomed to it.

A PC is a general purpose computer. Even if a console had 100% of the same hardware as a top quality gaming PC, it still wouldn't be a PC as long as it was locked down like a console, only able to do what the manufacturer tells it to do.

Consoles are an outdated concept anyway, they will die soon enough. The only question is whether the killing blow will be delivered by Apple, Google or Valve. Or maybe Amazon, who knows.

I don't think consoles will go anywhere nor PCs. Both will grow.

People tend to watch mobile/tablet as some kind of vacum but it is imo wrong assumption. Both of those platforms just got non gamer interest. Anyone that want to actually play games will be playing on either Console or PC. Because games are no longer gimmick medium like it used to be in 90' where people thought that game market can die.

If now for example all biggest publishers would die including sony ms, ea, ubi and so on... no one would give a flying fuck. People would simply buy other games like they buy books, music or movies. Developers working with those pubs will make their own companies or dev teams and so on.

It is not games market that needs to fear of its future. Its books, movies and music market that needs to fear games. Because soon in 10-20 years games will be PRIMARY media people use in their free time.

Just ten years ago playing games was look down upon as "kids toy". Now almost every adult play games, it is actualy hard to find someone under 30 that doesn't play games in one form or another.

But there's more money to made in those areas, for the time being, and it requires a similar skill set. Most AAA studios burn out their employees, and indie companies push out shit for money just as frequently.

Developing casual games is comparable to a skilled woodworker building simple children's toys rather than inlaid bureaus, bed frames, end tables and so on. It still requires skill to do well, but is faster and easier.

The concept of a dedicated gaming machine, be it made by Nintendo or by a PC gamer ala custom making it, will never go away.

Yeah probably. Or at least a "Mk. 2" version of the standard tablet will exist that does gaming as well, something like that. People who play games casually and don't give a shit will always want a simply plug and play way to play video games. Makes sense to me the future of that will be tablets with HDMI out and wireless controllers, but it could remain consoles if Sony and the rest play their cards right. Who knows? It will always exist though, in some form.

We really could use a "General Gaming news thread" to dump news like these into.

As long as there is demand for games on dedicated hardware, there will be companies stepping in to fill that demand. The industry might not be able to support the ridiculous mess that AAA games have become, but games will continue to be made in some capacity. This could be a very good thing - we might see a resurgence of small- and medium-budget niche genre games, or games that focus more on content than on presentation.

Console systems were the natural transition from Arcade games anyways. Even if they are similar in physical construct like that of a PC made for gaming, it's purpose and design is not comparable.
