Decline PS4 wins the console war against XboxONE, yet it is a hollow victory as Consolesdämmerung is upon us

Yeah, but how many games are CPU bottlenecked? RAM and GPU are much more important these days

Supreme Commander was CPU bottlenecked at release if I remember correctly. Just to give an example of the kind of game that would be.

Also, Skyrim, funnily enough. And on a single core too.

Still, it will be much faster than current gen consoles. Certainly not similar to a high-end ivy bridge i7, but it's better than originally thought.

The PS4 version may be clocked at 2Ghz as well, and come with other modifications. Not to mention, there's more of a push for multi-threading this go around, so performance may scale differently. How else can we explain the move to 8 cores? It's a waste of money if it goes unused. I think the GPU hardware better supports multi-threading compared to previous generations. At least Directx 11 made moves to make CPU threading possible.

    Edit:

    http://arstechnica.com/information-...orm-memory-access-coming-this-year-in-kaveri/

This article discusses what's different about memory usage this time around. Expect both the X and P to use this. The 360 did not have unified memory that functioned in this way.

Breakdown of development, including technical use of resources (memory usage), etc.

Apparently, they are not using compute yet. Only FXAA was used. Only about 4GB of memory was used. Multi-threading is taking a giant step forward. Interesting read. ;p

    Edit:

Shareholders want a piece of the pie that is PS4.

And we wonder why shit gets fucked up? Money grubbing jews!

That's all kewl from a technical point of view, but how much jiggahurtz does GG need to make an interesting game?

Doesn't surprise me, the consumer electronics and pc divisions of Sony are dragging the company down. TVs in particular might end up sinking them. The letter is "please spinoff the only healthy part of the company so we don't go down with the ship".

Games can become bottlenecked by anything depending on what you put in them.

The problem is that CPU bottlenecks tend not to scale. i.e. you can easily scale down your display resolution/shadows/particles/etc to meet the demands of a GPU 1/10th as strong. You can't scale CPU bottlenecks like pathfinding and AI to something 1/10th as powerful, so instead they are developed from the ground up to meet the lowest common denominator (consoles). The only things that you can really scale to CPU speed effectively without massively altering gameplay one way or another are stuff like physics, which you can see are often better on PCs but only in a fashion that has cosmetic effect rather than being integral to the gameplay (since consoles wouldn't be able to utilize it).

The interesting part is that their is still a lot of headroom left. Essentially, that's what the developer is getting at. They've yet to touch some of the features, and the optimizations they make nearly double performance. Something I thought was hilarious was that the game allocates over 500MBs of RAM to sound. I wonder what the end result will be? It's gotta be some crispy sounding shit if it's utilizing ALL of the RAM an Xbox 360 could allocate.

The real interest, for me, is that these new consoles provide a LOT of new technology that should translate to some new, and hopefully interesting, gameplay concepts. And by new and interesting, I mean naked-female-gun-wielding simulators (FPS). It's gonna be hot!

    Edit:
And to Manatee, Compute should provide some much needed processing power that the last generation never utilized. Thus, the revelry of base CPUs (with lots of cores). It's more or less the wave of the future. Get your surf board ready.

    https://developer.nvidia.com/gpu-ai-path-finding

The reason past games had SHIT AI was because there truely was no CPU headroom (as you say). It's different this time. There are several possible technical approaches to achieve the same affect (depending on needs). (This is especially true now that developers have a massive amount of processing power as a standard - unlike during past gen)

    Edit again:

    It's interesting. ;P
