The joke is on him lol. In two hours i managed to b-line toward all the fords, build carpenter and have the best bows! Also you could cheat the game by building say seven smithies, place them, buy all the good shit, then remove them to not pay upkeep, they stay in your building inventory and are not destroyed.

That explains why the combat is soooo fucking boring, and that coming from a dude that replayed all his games at least twice. here everything dies in two and a half hits,no matter the weapons you use.

The game is really bad,i won't even put it in the codexian goty list.

Those character portraits are something else aren't they? Looks like something out of Madame Tussaud's nightmares.

They would be a nice match for Dr. Dungeon's MADMAN!'s portraits.

I think they are just lazy 3D generated portrait using some free 3D software. They feels like something out of mid 2000s flash porn game but worse.

I don't think that making games is Vogels main profession anymore. Actually I think he does it just as some (very profitable) side income and is trolling people for at least the last 10 years...

I got it. (Read Vogel's notes in the manual.)

In his previous games you led Adventurers on a Mysterious Quest. Here you are a Civic Policy Enforcer who leads a party of henchmen to Manage a Problematic Province. There is little sense of mystery; the problems you are to be invested in mainly concern which agents you back when trying to get a grip on the situation and which face you show to the people; both of these seem to lead to some consequences. So respecing makes sense: in 'reality' you take different, variously skilled people to different places.

Vogel has not made the same game for the nth time: this is actual innovation :) Whether it's for the better, I'm not sure. I didn't really want a sim game.

One positive I've noticed is that there is a lot of branching and C&C as the game goes on. The game has 3 main conflicts and one can choose between 2 different factions in each conflict. The game keeps a hidden track throughout the game of how you speak about the 3 conflicts in question, and if one appears to favor one faction's approach too strongly, the opposing faction will be reluctant to work with you, if at all. Also resolving certain side quests in a particular manner can make an outright enemy of a faction.

The most impressive example of C&C I've seen is one that involved multiple factions and conflicts. To gain the approval of a ruling faction in one conflict, I needed something that the ruling faction in another central conflict would never agree to. As a result, I could work towards replacing the ruling faction in the 2nd conflict with a weaker and more malleable one that acquiesced to the demands of the ruling faction in the 1st conflict.

In many ways Queen's Wish represents an emphasis on C&C not seen in Vogel's works since Geneforge concluded. It's a real pity that to experience it one must swallow the bitter pill that is the gutted character development system.

This doesn't make sense. If you are "in reality" choosing different people for jobs, why not simply let players hire new mercenaries? That's how PK does it. You can make as many mercs as you have the cash for. Mercs that you remove from the party remain in the roster, and you can re-hire them again.

Also, there's a fort improvement, which allow you to go back home, even if you've not finished the main quest (or any quest for that matter). Mom is very disappointed, but you can go back to a life of leisure and doing fuck all.

You get some ending slides and apparently Jeff wants to have your choices carry over to the sequel

Are people here serious, respecing??? Are you that retarded??? There is nothing to fucking respec! The combat is so boring and tedious with the retarded scailing, that it is painful. I just got the best equipment for my people and do you know what the difference made when fighting generic enemy A??? None, you did exactly the same damage upgraded as you did it before. Fucking everything dies in a two and a half hits. Magic is also total garbage, every single spell deals the same damage, the difference is how many enemies will hit. There is no magic efficiency or spellpower to upgrade your caster. There is also no fucking classes, everyone ends up the absolutely the same, both in skills and equipment. You end up having the same type of soldier because you try to get the passive bonuses from all the skill trees. Also there is not range skill tree because that old faggot is lazy. You could use the melee skils with a bow,oh also no tier 3 bows for you goyz. Still it is the most useful weapon,i ended up with 4 archers, because of how broken the game is. Fuck, you need to be really brain dead retard to need respecing lol.

The writing is really garbage also,it is go clean X dungeon because it will give you +1 stone. On top of that the dungeons are soooooo fucking boring and generic,i fell asleep cleaning them (not a joke). There is no secrets,no interesting plot,no loot, you just take blocks of stone or pieces of wood from chest while killing garbage enemy.

Thats my feeling too after putting more hours in, theres some real C&C , thats rare enough to mention it. All in all despite the shortcomings its one of its best game.

A password system for saving? That's truly old-school. Can't say I've missed it though.

If all that's carrying over are major story choices, it seems easier to use that (or some series of questions in the sequel's character creation screen asking what choices you've made) than to keep your save file(s) around. It's also easier to "restore" your game state for the sequel if you lose a short code than if you lose a save and have to go through the game again.

It's probably done that way to make it easier to import data to the sequel for the tablet version

So it's the same game as Geneforge 2? Only shittier set-up.

That's also a tradition I'm happy he kept. In Geneforge 2 you could walk back home thirty minutes into the game and suffer the consequences.

I'll be blunt and honest: yes, the game C&C shows an effort he hasn't done since Geneforge. It improves after the spectacularly shitty start (where everything looks like it was written by a not particularly bright child for his first D&D campaign). Again, credit where credit is due. If only the factions where a tad more interesting than Mud Mexicans and Slavers.

The grind is starting to get to me though. All the combat feels the same. You get better """equip stats""", better """skills""", and everything feels the same and takes the same time. The same enemy requires the same amount of time to be defeated at the beginning of the game and a third of the game in. I know that Spiderweb's games always had a trash combat focus, but here you have no reason to fight them. They are there to make you lose time. Even the old Spiderweb thingie of placing corpses on the Main Map with some extra stuff is gutted because "ooh a corpse with maybe items but fuck enemy groups", it's better to flat-out avoid them and to get to the shitty items because all cool equipment seems to be fort-dependant. Way to go to reward exploration. I'm tired to find Stone Blocks inside a chest.

I was wondering where he got the inspiration for the "single run only Boss matters dungeons". It's a .... peculiar idea, if badly managed. I mean, if you reach the end of a dungeon with your equipment (limited) and your HP/Energy spent you are fucked, better reset. Losing time, grinding again. Dungeons need to be smaller and simpler because you can't make them too big, too creative, or put "fuck you" surprises. It's like a Spiderweb version of Darkest Dungeon without the finesse of DD.

Isn't DD the epitome of grind? Would be peculiar if that was indeed the inspiration

I've played the demo a little and i have to say i disagree with the RPGMaker comparisons - RPGMaker games support gamepad, Queen's Wish doesn't :-P.

Though on a more serious note, i do not mind the graphics at all and really the only thing about the graphics i disliked was this "smile":

But fortunately you can edit the faces of the people when including them in your party so i changed that to a frown.

I haven't played much to judge beyond a first impression, but from the little i've seen i liked the writing (in terms of descriptions, character dialogs, etc - i do not know about the overall plot) and found it mostly funny. The combat is a bit meh and i'm not a fan of getting no benefit (XP, loot) from random(?) encounters at all (and even when you get loot, it is mostly uninteresting stuff - i built a bit of my fort but haven't really found that part very interesting). I think it will be the writing that will make me decide if i want to keep playing or not (...at a much much later point as i have other games i want to finish first).

One thing that i didn't like is the UI though... it feels like it was designed for tablets first and ported to PC later (even if technically speaking the tablet version hasn't been released yet). There is too much clicking, too many oversized (ie. touch friendly) buttons and too little use of KBM oriented functionality (and why can't i just drag+drop stuff?). I wonder what is the percentage of Vogel's games on tables for him to design the game's UI primarily for them (though it might be just that he personally likes tablets more).
