He sounds a bit nervous, as if his family was in crushing debt or something. I hope he's OK!

I watched the video. The game looks as if he took the old engine and changed the perspective a bit, right?

You do know that Vogel is a Mac guy, right? He used to make games Macintosh first.
I know, I've been playing his games for years, I'm just wondering how making an Ipad port is worth it and making an Adroid port isn't.

Hah, I recently talked about this in a discussion of Six Ages' potential release platforms. Basically:

Android apps get pirated to an insane degree, compared to iOS apps' "way way less insane amount of piracy".
It's likely over 90% of all app users on Android pirated the app. (obviously this varies by app and year and so on, but there's a trend)

"interesting fact: Only 5% of Monument Valley installs on Android are paid for. 40% on iOS. "
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/piracy-android-how-bad-is-it-really/

"Some may remember the case of Dead Trigger, a mobile game that debuted with a $0.99 price tag on both Android and iOS. After being hit by such an unbelievably high piracy rate, the developers had no choice but to make the Android version free."

Imagine that. Because people are stealing your game so much, you're FORCED to make it free. If you're selling your game for 10 USD elsewhere (which is the case with King of Dragon Pass on iOS, an unheard of high price on the appStore), Android seems like a completely mad idea and a waste of money and time.

This never made sense to me. Even if they pirate 90% of the stuff on Android, he would get 10% legit sales. But if the doesn't port it, he will get 0%. Nobody will buy an Ipad just to play this game. The only reason for not putting it on Android I can think of is that it would took more resources than the 10% sales would cover.

Hasn’t Apple been trying to make it easier for devs to design stuff for both the latest OSX iteration and iOS? If you’re already making a Mac version it might not be that much extra effort to port it over to the iPhone.

Hmm.

He'll have my money if he does an innovative game that plays with the same strengths Geneforge had: good setting, reactivity, somewhat enjoyable moral dilemmas. I am not paying for Bioware lite, nor for self-inserts, nor for crappy killtheratathon. Earn my money, and not thanks to Steam that gave him free visibility.

Vogel said:
We invite you to escape into the all-new world of Queen's Wish. This will hopefully be an all-new trilogy in a a unique and fascinating setting, which you will be free to remake to your liking.

You are the youngest child of Queen Sharyn, the absolute leader of the Empire of Haven. While your older siblings have grabbed fame and power, you have slid by in a life of quiet luxury. Until now.

Your mother has decided to force power upon you and send you out into the world. Your new home: The wild, war-torn land of Sacramentum. There was once a successful Haven colony there. It then fell apart, for reasons not entirely clear.

To win the Queen's favor, you must go to Sacramentum and rebuild Haven's colony. But will you? Will you crush the nations of Sacramentum and expand Haven? Make peace with them and earn a place in their lands? Or just try to escape from your mother and homeland?

I've read Japanese porn games with more interesting set-ups. Let's hope you fail, Vogel, so you will be forced to do something new for once.

Well, at least I won't have to give him money. Vogel, when you tire of cookie-cutter bioware-lite crappy derivatives, can you remake Nethergate? Pay for some good art, this time.

The only reason for not putting it on Android I can think of is that it would took more resources than the 10% sales would cover.

That is the reason. Porting is often non-trivial (especially if, like Vogel or A Sharp, you're using your own engine and not Unity or something else with multiple platform export pipeline) and either you spend your time and effort to do it, or you hire someone. Either option costs you money.
And remember, the prices on Android are ridiculously low.

So the prospect is:
- you sell 10% at best, quite possibly it'll be 5%, or less.
- your price per unit will be a lot lower than elsewhere. OR, you keep the price "high" and will as a result sell even fewer copies.

The chance of even making up the cost is quite low.

(and as Vogel explained - porting companies go out of business, or stop supporting their ports after some time. In the best situation, you depend on someone else to support your port. Or they go away and you either have to support something you didn't port yourself (good luck there), or you just let the port die. Again, not a great prospect.)

So, his new game still looks absolutely revolting, much like every other game he ever produced. Can't say I'm surprised.

Christ Jeff. Was so excited for this and am now super let down.

Not sure if I'm gonna back. This makes Black Geyser look like the Citizen Kane of KS pitches.

EDIT: Anyone else having a hard time seeing this video in-browser? I had to use my phone to watch the pitch because it won't play on Chrome. But other pitch videos from other campaigns do.....

We plan to have Sacramentum be settled by three different nations, each with their own culture, beliefs, problems, and tendency to violence. We would like to add another, an alien underworld nation shrouded in mystery.

VOGEEEEEEEEEL!

:mixedemotions:

My thoughts exactly. I bet the three different nations are Empire, Celts and Romans.

When I first saw the title I thought the game would be about Columbus and the Spanish Queen, and then... meh.
So generic. And I guess he still wont have axes, warhammers and maces as legit weaponry in this one too.

Ah yes, Queen Sharyn, such a regal name.

I know it isn't exactly similar to Sharon... but still, cmon..

Baffles me. There's all kinds of tilebased indie games on Steam that look like they cost $10,000 to make that have gorgeous 2D art. Vogel is just a lost cause.

One game in particular I was thinking of:

ss_fb8c384360b0440e52f6db37d61c277bd31c418c.1920x1080.jpg

I somehow doubt they had to spend millions of dollars to accomplish a decent look. It just seems like Vogel refuses to shop around for artists worth whatever he's paying them.

You are not supposed to call yourself a "living legend", Jeff. Have someone else do it, ffs.
Such a stupid thing to say, he torpedoed in just two words one of his greatest assets, that is, the chance of presenting himself as the scrappy underdog (who of course is given a pass for many of his shortcomings).

Now a lot of people are going to be like "Oh yeah, Mr. Living Legend? Let's see how you crank out a Living Legendary Game, this time I'm not going to let the tiniest flaw slide by."

Jeff has always been a bit of an egotist, but as much as the guy annoys me I generally enjoy his work.

Hopefully this succeeds.

The living legend thing is sort of a long-running joke I think: http://www.rpgcodex.net/article.php?id=9049
If it is, it's not a very wise move to replicate it in a Kickstarter pitch, where the aim is to recruit a lot of new fans (who won't of course know about your autistic in-jokes).
It's not like I am statistically significant or anything, but, I mean, I had no idea about it, and it's not like I don't know anything about Vogel. I can only think how well it's going to sit with people who never heard of him.

P.S. Never mind, I just noticed the amount of money he's asking for. What I wrote above is probably quite irrelevant.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Took another look at the pitch and it bears repeating how utterly lazy and uninformative it is.

Usually, KS pitches come with a nice little section called "Features" where the devs list the planned features of the game in an easy to read bullet point format.

There's nothing like this there. Just two paragraphs of text that say "you build forts" and "you explore the world".

This disregards every single piece of common knowledge about how to pitch a game, or, heck, how to pitch any product at all.

I've read car insurance advertisements that had more enthusiasm in them than this.
