Why isn't there an option to make inventions freely available to the public after a certain period of time? That would still leave an opportunity for inventors to profit from them while preventing patent trolling and allowing the others to catch up eventually.

Can anyone explain to me in layman's terms the probable consequences of lifting import tariffs? Is it just MOAR profits, or is there more to it?

Having this as an important matter as early as in late 11th Century has its downsides.

What Scandinavia may ask in return for removing all their import tariffs could not be worth the deal. There is no way they will just agree to that without gaining anything from it. For example, they could demand exclusive access to everything manufactured in Vinland or, if they are bold enough, for Vinland to become a dominion, even if that would make their monarch no more than a figurehead within the New World.
