    <p>Gamespy's PC <a href="http://goty.gamespy.com/2006/pc/index24.html" target="_blank" title="Game of the Year">Game of the Year</a> winners have been announced and <a href="http://www.relic.com/" target="_blank" title="Relic">Relic</a> came out on top. <a href="http://www.companyofheroesgame.com/" target="_blank" title="CoH">Company of Heroes</a> won <strong>Game of the Year</strong>, <strong>RTS</strong>, <strong>Multiplayer</strong>, and <strong>Sound</strong>. <a href="http://www.dow-darkcrusade.com/main.php?region=US" target="_blank" title="Dark Crusade">Dawn of War: Dark Crusade</a> won <strong>Best Expansion</strong>. Relic itself was declared the <strong>Developer of the Year</strong>, meaning that all other developers must give them their lunch money for the next 12 months.
    </p><p>But they're not the only ones in a good mood. Stardock's <a href="http://www.galciv2.com/" target="_blank" title="GalCiv2">Galactic Civilizations II</a> won <strong>Best Turn-Based Strategy</strong>, all because of mathboy's single vote. <a href="http://www.riseoflegends.com/" target="_blank" title="Rise of Legends">Rise of Legends</a> won <strong>Special Achievement in Art Direction</strong>. And I guess everyone won the award for <strong>Trends We Like - Great Strategy Expansions</strong>. So congratulations and God bless us, everyone. </p>

Re: Relic & Stardock Win Big at Gamespy

... for what, unbalancing an already unbalanced game even more?

I have to say though, I downloaded the DoWPro mod and have been playing a few games in that lately. It makes a huge and very noticeable difference. Mind you turrets still seem completely ineffective but the AI is bucket loads better, the new units really add to the game causing you to actually build and tweak units to combat certain attacks (like attaching LasCannons to Sentinels for anti-vehicle support or Flamethrowers for anti-infantry support) and even though there are still a few issues, the game is a lot better balanced. Minor complaint in that it enforces arbitrary unit limits such as you can't build any more than say 4 Predator tanks. Starcraft did quite well without any of that bullshit thank you very much. All in all though, very impressive and turns a boring "build more units -> win" game into a real fight for supremacy. Instead of having games where I either walk all over my opponents or they walk all over me, I'm actually seeing a bit of a struggle in battles. Not much mind you (he with more units will still win, even though there is finally a bit of that "units fulfilling specific roles" strategy) but enough that it's made me way more interested in Dawn of War again.

Starcraft had unit limits, just higher.

For the relatively small maps in DoW such a unit limit is pretty good. Play a bit of WA on how things can get out of hand without such restrictions.

Dark Crusade deserves the kudos for being the best of this year though, especially if you look at the competition of this year. Necron are unbalanced yes (if you let them expand that is) and the campaign tends to get boring really fast as any Total War-wannabe RTS campaign of the last few years but in the end those two new races and some of the special missions are brilliant enough to warrant a purchase. It's not a classic but just quite decent.

What Gamespy said about "great strategy expansions" is beyond me, there have been a lot of expansions, but not really ones as good as Brood War or as Core Contingency.

Why is there no mention of Civilization IV: Warlords in the "Great strategy expansions" text?

Here's what they said about the 4 expansions in the award text:
And here's what they said about Warlords:
So they're being somewhat consistent at least.

Well, OK, they're consistent, thanks. I still think Warlords is a very good expansion and Great Generals are an another important gameplay element alongside vassal states.

That's the point. The total population of all units in Starcraft was 200. If I wanted to fill that up with tanks, I could. If I wanted to fill that up with Carriers I could. Sure tanks took up 2 so I could only get 100 tanks and Carriers take up 6 (or is it 8?) so I can only get 30 (not including any number of harvesting units I'd decide to get) but I was still free to do so. I wasn't limited because of a decision that "just one more" would make you too uber (Sorry General, the Germans aren't going to let us build anymore Spitfires. It unbalances the air battles). Instead, if I wanted to fill it up with Marines, I could. The reason you didn't though is because you'd get your arse kicked. A small number of wraiths could harass your tanks without harm. A small number of Dark Templars could kill your entire Marine army and so on.

In DoWPro, if I want to fill my army up with Tanks... I can't. "You can only build 4". If I want to fill my army up with Kerkins, I can't. "You can only build 3". Note that I'm not talking about the population limit here in that Predator's take up 5 and you can only have "20" vehicles IE: 4 Predators. I'm talking about the hard exact limit implemented in DowPro which even though you might be able to build more according to your population, they instead introduce a hard cap. As a result, I'm not building an entire army of Ogryns not because they'd be killed easily be a small handful of some other unit but instead because I'm limited to only 3 groups of them. At the best, it's an artificial attempt at balance. The hero units I can understand and accept but not everything else.

Relic's best strategy game was Homeworld.

    No questions asked, right?

I find your constant criticism of DoW a bit annoying, but can't criticize it because you and me simply want different things from this type of games. However, I do kinda agree with this criticism. At the very list, they could implement a kind of "Force Org" limit to be in line with the tabletop. Stuff is classed into HQ, Elite, Troops, Heavy Support, and Fast Attack. You have a limit on each type besides troops, but whether you go for predators or whirlwinds is up to you. It'd be less restrictive, closer to the source, and would be a simple expansion of the concept of "troop" and "vehicle" limits like they exist currently.

What can I say, there's a lot about DoW to criticize. Someone's got to do it.
