It's probably the best investment money-wise if you're looking for a gamepad for your PC, considering almost every console port seems to play ball with the 360 gamepad just fine without any shenanigans. It's just plug n play. Didn't some later revision improve the D-pad quality by actually making it usable?

And a ps3 controller looks like a 360 controller to games. Best of all worlds.

I think the reason consoletards love the 360 controller is that it's presumably good for FPS. However, if you buy a controller for games which actually play well with a controller, it's rather subpar. Close to impossible to play platformers on the shitty d-pad (this is such a problem that some platformers default to using the left analog stick for movement, see Guacamelee or Mark of the Ninja for reference), weird egg-shaped face buttons feel like crap, as do the bumpers, and if you have small hands, using the left stick to move in 3D games is kinda uncomfortable.

I currently use a PS4 controller for PC games, and I'm very satisfied with it, although I really like the PS3 one as well. They are pretty expensive though, no denying that. Supposedly the Wii U Pro Controller is really good as well, but even more expensive, because lol Nintendo.

If you live in a civilized part of the world though, $18 for a F310 off amazon is probably the best value for someone who doesn't care too much about specifics.
