    Those <a href="http://www.rpgdot.com">RPGDot</a> awards just keep on coming! The latest is the <a href="http://www.rpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10053&ID=487">Most Anticipated Single-Player RPG</a>.
    <br>
    <br>
    <a href="http://www.gothic2.com/">Gothic 2</a> takes the top spot, with <a href="http://www.deusex2.com/">Deus Ex 2</a> hot on it's heels, and <a href="http://lionheart.blackisle.com">Lionheart</a> trailing a little way behind in third place.
    <br>
    <br>
    I'm still not <i>at all</i> convinced about Deus Ex as an RPG.

    If your not so damned sure, why dont you play thru without using skills (or improving them) or augs at any time on realistic. Even besides that you have, at the very least, an illusion of descision thruout.
    The problem (and, inevitable descision of this website) is that when a game is influenced equally by two genres you cant get people to agree on anything- let alone the hardcore.
    Plese, no more comments like this.

    Cute, but I'll make comments like that all I want, especially when they express my opinion. I don't think that Deus Ex should be classed as an RPG. Sure, it has roleplaying elements, but that doesn't make it an RPG. I was simply putting across the fact that I am not convinced that it is an RPG.

    Augs.. Wouldn't that be like saying, "If you're not sure Doom isn't an RPG, play through it with your fists." After all, augs are really nothing more than items.

    Skills are an RPG element, but even Daikatana had those. Is it an RPG?

    Sorry , but with your defintion Metroid is an RPG. I can't wait to go home and play my favorite RPG Metroid Prime. I would in all honesty say that Deus Ex is an FPS with some strong RPG elements, buts thats it. IMO Deus Ex is a SS2 clone without the atmoshpere, no anticipation here.

    Did Daikatana have at least two ways to get past every situation?
    You choose augs. You can only have so many augs.
    In fact, for every aug you have two choices and for the slot you can have about 6 choices.
    Not to mention the way you use Augs is distinctly unFPS.
    Sure it is not a pure or traditional RPG, but from what I have gathered of the Codex opinion is that nothing makes an RPG besides the ability to Roleplay- and the character JC Denton was decidedly dull so that you could put some of your own decisions into it.
    Also, about the so called ridiculous usage of punishment for fallowing a certain path, I am unconvinced that it is all that complete- every game can be broken. Ever tried to attack a Vault Dweller?

    The diolouge was interactive, and the entire fact that most rpgies include an opposite and equal reaction for your action- you break into the quikiemart right next to the Chinese guards, the guards will attack you. You still can take everything inside, though.

    Yup, you could kill the monsters or not kill them.. Pretty much the same thing as Deus Ex, minus clubbing the monsters.

    You choose guns. You can only have so much ammo.

    You're joking, right?

    O yeah- I remember all those non-combat areas in Daikatana.
    THis fact in my view makes SS an FPS and DX an RPG. SS had few diolouges and fewer non combat area. DX did not.
    There was no way to get past monsters in Katana. There where no two ways to get around a problem. No two pathes. No repercussions.
    Bullshit. By that thing, anything that has a limit is an FPS.
    Dude, you have a LVL 50 max in Arcanum, it's an FPS!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!!
    Can you name a FPS that has a similar system, anyway?
    It's really quite an interesting game mechanic. I loved the area in Area 54 where you could hack into aug Ragnorak or kill everyone for the key.
    Or just not do it. Also, to add to it, Augs are more or less a roleplaying descision as well as practical- do you get the spydrone as the thief or the ballistic resistance as the gunner?
    Not only that, but the area is not obvious.

    There are skill points that you earn by performing tasks in Deus Ex. These you can spend on the skills of your choice. The choices you make can play an important part if you decide to play the game a certain way.

    In Deus Ex 2, the skill points have been removed, and only the augs remain. I very wise choice indeed in my opinion.

    I never liked Deus Ex very much. I think it's because I've played games that do what it tries to do, but does far too poorly. Games such as Thief, System Shock and Half-Life.
    But I would still give it a little more credit than comparing it to Daikatana. After all, we're talking about a game that you can finish without killing anyone. That's more than what can be said about most crpgs.

    Deus Ex is not an RPG. Would you call Thief a First Person Shooter? It shares some common elements, but it's considerably different. Would you call The 11th Hour or The 7th Guest Survival Horror? Once again, they share common elements, but don't fit the genre. Deus Ex is a FPS with RPG elements, and it doesn't really do either genre well.

    I do not pretend to claim that DX is a pure RPG.
    Whatever, this argument it petty and I should not have brought it up.

    So much for that illusion.
