If you didn't like 1, you won't like 2. Seriously, why do people play Sacred if they don't like the genre?

It'd be like if I played Halo, then went and bitched at them for it not having enough dialogue trees.

Why do you equate disliking Sacred with disliking action RPGs in general? I've enjoyed some ARPGs but I loath Sacred. I judge it on it's merits as an ARPG and it fails as an ARPG.

Sacred is the only game I'm aware of with dumber level-scaling than Oblivion. There is no point in levelling; the challenge level is completely static. I played through about 70% of the game without bothering to level. At one point I decided to spend fifteen levels worth of advancement points and nothing really changed - it was no easier nor more difficult to kill the bad guys.

So there's no point in killing mobs for experience points, and as it turns out there's little point in killing them at all because they endlessly respawn. Walk halfway across the screen and the entire area has respawned. Travelling anywhere entails wading through the same opponents over and over and over again.

Loot drops are a farce because half the equipment is class specific and can't be used by the player and the other half is useless junk barely worth lifting for the sale value. Once in a blue moon there's an item worth equipping, but for the most part merchants are the only viable source of gear.

An ARPG with meaningless character development, pointless combat and a serious lack of phat lewt is a failed ARPG.

Me neither (gave up somewhere in the middle). Way too repetitive and unrewarding. Massive areas with 10000 ever-respawning monsters of the same type just rock. It had some nice features, but it was all wasted. PRAY FOR FORGIVNESSS!1

Played the demo for a few hours... for what it's worth:

I tried to like Sacred, but it just lacked focus in too many areas... ridiculous amounts of useless loot, subsequent ridiculous amounts of useless gold, never-ending waves of grindy things... I give it huge praise for some of the art, the size of the world, and for having some really great atmosphere... but the game-play is the thing; and Sacred just wasn't any fun to play.

So, I have to say I was rather enjoying the demo tonight. It's not going to cure cancer, but:

    1. I never looked at the control scheme much, it's pretty standard and therefore intuitive... I say this because I'm not sure if the camera is controllable, but if it isn't it's a pretty clever one. I was constantly surprised at how well the camera moved... NWN2 would be a decent game with this camera.

    2. Instead of wave after wave of multiple critters, the numbers seemed less... more like 2-3 at a time instead of a dozen... but they still re-spawn rapidly and that still gets annoying.

    3. Diablo2 save system. Love it or hate it, that's what it seemed to be to me.

    4. Store interaction was clunky... pick up and drag to sell (again, I could have missed an easier way to do this, but I don't think I did.)... pretty clunky too.

    5. The interface itself was sharp and well designed.... at both 1600x1200 and 1920x1200, it was unobtrusive and clean.

    6. Graphics are nice, but I look forward to somebody releasing a game with a little more muted and serious-feeling color palette. Tended to the garish.

    7. Quests were well-organized and they are easily-marked, for better or worse.

    8. The map is very similar to the one from Sacred, and as I thought that was one of the things that game did do right, I've got no complaints here.

    9. Combat was very Diablo2-ish... moreso even then Sacred. The core mechanics of timed abilities and finding skill power-ups... even the way you spend your points when leveling... a lot of the core game seems almost unchanged from the first game. (Although I did notice a sort of "sub" skill tree, that I think might make the character-building a little more distinct.)

If you hated Sacred... I would doubt enough has changed this time around. But I did play for 3 hours straight, and I must admit I was sucked in.

Is it still filled with trivial fed ex/kill that monster quests? Are there any NPC's with personalities and conversations or only quest givers and merchants? Does it have the same level scaling Sacred1 had? From what you say about the combat, it sounds like it's WOW style, amirite?

Just played...and all I can say at that point is that I liked the graphics. Except that, respawning enemies and level scaling are still here, the interface was not comfortable for me and the quests are the usual fedex/kill variety. Oh, and the voice overs are very annoying.

P.S. You get to play a tall blond on heels. :o

    1. I found maybe 10 quests, and completed several... you can tell it's a starting area, and I would hope the quests become more complex, but they weren't too bad. There was one "Kill 5 X..." quest for sure, but a few others were pretty cool. All in all, this struck me as a pretty routine component of the game. Nothing much new here, but not awful.

    2. Again, it was a starting area, but I will say the writing was decent. It does make a difference. No Torment quality was found, but it was much better than Sacred in this regard. The depth of personality was about on par with WoW, the conversations similar.

    3. I was definitely feeling more powerful as time went on... I can say that much.

    4. The combat is as similar to WoW as the combat in Sacred was... other than the 'feel' of targeting an enemy and the obvious update in graphics technology, combat was very similar mechanically to the first game. So, sure; Wow combat x Sacred combat = Sacred 2 combat. You select an enemy, keep mouse button pressed to Stay On Target!, and then activate your skills when their timer is up via hotkey.

2 Gigabytes for a demo, what the hell? I remember a few years ago when I thought 1 Gigabyte for Medieval Total War was a huge amount, now we're seeing demos- DEMOS that take up twice as much space.

Yeah, I wouldn't bother with the demo if it's gonna be that big, I'd just not remove anything from inventory to try it.

Hmm, massive respawns and massive amounts of grindy comment is a no buy for me.

It's what killed Sacred 1 for me, I had hoped that would be changed in the sequel, apparently not.

The above witness accounts should already be enough for me to drop the last shred of interest in the game, but still:
Is the special ability/spell raising system still the same as it was in S1?

Mods could, probably, save the game, with a dedicated & talented enough community, but I gather S2 won't be moddable - am I correct, or have the devs turned themselves around on that since last I checked in on the project?

Downloaded it. Sorry, but I cannot give an opinion on this game. I really cannot bear to play it any longer than 5 minutes. It runs like shit on my computer, as most games do on Nvidia's fuckoff drivers. The female animations are idiotic as is the skimpy armor/clothing. Voice acting is god-awful. Combat feels painfully clunky. Even if this game does has C&C somewhere in there... I just cannot play this.

I exited the game and uninstalled as soon as the PC hit someone in the face with her sword (twirling around in a miniskirt, btw) and yelled "Feel my power!"

Didn't manage to finish it. Combat is boring, story is worthless, voice acting sub par even for games of this nature. I dislike the color palette they used; too bright and happy. Females look plasticy, animations are passable (better than Oblivions hur hur hur - and probably F3s too) if a little stiff and awkward.

Inventory, skills, attribute management feels awkward and unintuitive. I suppose if you liked the first sacred you may like this one, but I didn't even like the first one and I sure as hell don't like this one.
