Seriously, how is Witcher 3 ranked higher than Age of Decadence in the Codex ranking?

this means any class-based RPG without multiclassing isn't an RPG though

    https://rpgcodex.net/forums/index.p...eneral-codex-theory-of-what-is-an-rpg.106544/

    1. Character creation has some form of in-game consequences ❌
    2. Statistics which define character(s) abilities are subject to change throughout the game✅
    3. Character(s) have skills or abilities which may improve or be altered over the course of gameplay✅
    4. Character(s) accrue experience which can be spent or result in gaining levels or abilities✅
    5. Character(s) accumulate items in some form of inventory, which the player can actively use (equip, sell, destroy, trade, etc.), which enhance or otherwise alter gameplay✅
    6. Character(s) accumulate currency which may be spent to enhance the character(s) in some way (items, guild membership, training, etc.)✅
    7. Character(s) gain levels throughout the game which result in some form of mechanical change (not just a change in character title, or description)✅
    8. Character(s) are able to explore over terrain, water, space, etc. ('explore' refers to free movement of main character(s))✅
    9. The game has some form of puzzle solving, which is resolved through combat, problem resolution, or some choice made by the player✅
    10. A choice made by the player alters the narrative, or some other significant part of the game (an item is found or lost, stats or skills are gained or lost, different ending, etc.)✅
    11. Character(s) interact with NPCs in some form of dialogue which have in-game consequences depending on what the character(s) say.✅
    12. Optional quests (defined here as some kind of task made available after the game has started, and which can be resolved by the player before the game ends, but is not required to complete the game) are available.✅

wow that sure isn't an RPG
Hello fellow codexers, I also hate all popular games and only like obscure games because that makes me cool on the codex.

Do you mean with? Because absent multi-classing means you have to pick one class and stick with it. In something like an IE game, you can't multi into every class, and the XP cap means you can't level an infinite number of times. In something like Grimoire, you can multi into every class, but you're still stuck with whatever race you started with (part of why non-cosmetic character creation matters).

This definition is complete garbage. A more concise definition that doesn't rely on an arbitrary threshold of criteria-matching is clearly superior.

By that 12-point definition, Ocarina of Time is an RPG. Kind of defeats the purpose of making a definition if it's that inclusive.

    Well remembered.

For me they are miles apart. TW2 may have taken a leap from TW2 into more popamole territory, but it's stunning C&C, tight quest structure, brilliant cast of characters, and focussed storytelling make it far, FAR better than the bloated, soulless, work-manlike Witcher 3.

Hell you're character build & potions/oils still actually matter on harder levels in TW2. In TW3 you may as well not have them, even on Death March.

This is such a retarded take. I have said many times that I really enjoyed TW3, and I like the writing and production values, but that it’s not much of an RPG. That’s why putting it in the Codex top 101 RPGs of all time is dumb.

I like the angle you are coming from, but your current definiton makes Stellaris an RPG. You have to commit to a political build, you customise it before gamestart and the build drastically changes the gameplay. The only thing vague is how much your strategic decisions work against your empire build, as you mostly interface with your empire over political decisions and science until the big wars break out. Also D is a muddy point since almost all rpgs except the most popamole garbage will test your mental skills.

Assassan's Creed Odyssey and The Witcher 3 are the exact same type of game. If one is an RPG, then the other is, and if one isn't an RPG, the other isn't as well.
At their core they are the exact same, the only difference being that The Witcher 3 has much better writing, world design, and combat.

That's fair, thinking about it again they probably have roughly equal combat quality.

He is right, you absolutely reek of fedora tipping m'lady comparing Age of Decadence to what is arguably one of the best RPGs of the decade. Witcher 3 did some things wrong, but -most- things right. It is a fully realized world with deep lore, interesting characters brought to life (including the protagonist), and complex skill tree, etc etc. It's C&C is fairly weak but that is sort of the new paradigm unfortunately. In most other categories it literally ticks all the boxes as Rusty put up above, but we get it, you are a super edgelord w/ your hot take. You should probably do a followup article w/ the guy that pretends to be a chick here, Lilura, about how Jagged Alliance is the greatest game of all time with AoD right under it.

Haha you’re right, I’m such an edgelord. AoD is not the greatest game of all time. I never claimed that. I simply thought it was retarded that people on the codex whine about decline, but then rank W3 the best RPG since 2012, despite the fact that it is the epitome of decline.
    So much edge.
Witcher 3 is an absolutely fantastic game, I really do love it, but it’s not at all an RPG, let alone one of the best of the decade.

Also how is saying that W3 is not an RPG related to fedora tipping? Is it because I’m not drooling over the production values of W3?

It’s a great game. Sucky RPG though.

  17. Seriously, how can anyone in this day and age still nurture any delusions about codexers? 99% of this site is composed by popamole, larpers, graphicwhores, storyfags, settingfags and worldbuildingfags.

  18. See? Genuine cRPGs are "spreadsheet games", while popamole games with awful combat are fun games. Classic inversion of values.

We had this debate already, man. As I said, jumping to a speeding truck is not a choice nor a good way to build an RPG.

You can agree with that. You can disagree with that. Doesn't matter. And I do enjoy various games other than hardcore RPGs. Is TW3 a muh amazing hardcore RPG. Definitely not. But as a package, it is more enjoyable to play than AoD ever could.

And before you blather about RPG RPG RPG, mind you, I consider Underrail to be the best RPG to come out that year. It is a good game, values player input on character building without shoehorning your built without meta-gaming/save-scumming. Further debates are of no use as you and I fundamentally see the main flaw (for me) of AoD in too different lights.

But same question, why is W3 ranked higher as an RPG than Underrail?

If you want to talk about story, sure W3 has it beat, presentation? Yep. RPG? No.

But Zelda can be considered a RPG. One of its creators said it.

As an overall game? TW3 beats AoD, simple.

As I said, RPG is not binary. The Witcher qualifies as an RPG due to having RPG elements. For many people in the Codex, it would seem TW3 managed to be an enjoyable and good RPG.

I don't this is a necessity. I can't think of an example without character creation, but imagine a game where you start as a blank slate and grow into a build as the game progresses. That would definitely still be an RPG, as even though everyone's the same at level 1, different characters are going to play completely different at level 10.

Hell, that would be incredibly newcomer-friendly. In the first area the player can do everything and all aspects of the game are tutorialized. The player pushes a box and mind tricks a peasant. Then the player moves on to the second area and levels up, choosing to increase magic over strength. Now the player can mind trick a guard but is too weak to push a boulder. Zoinks! Choices and consequences, newbie!

What puts Witcher 3 over the top of a game series like Dragon Age are the 4 extra hours of cinematics.
