Seriously, how is Witcher 3 ranked higher than Age of Decadence in the Codex ranking?

Gothic 1&2. You start with basic stats and few skills. Then you develop your hero as you see fit. No character creation there.

Are you roleplaying Geralt? Then why do you control Ciri and make choices for her when Geralt is 10 feet away?

GTA and Red Dead Redemption are also RPGs.

When you play Halo you roleplay Master Chief, it is a roleplaying game as well.

I've never played this, but that sounds like you're describing a typical JRPG.

Don’t you know it’s autistic to say any game is not an RPG? You’re an edgelord for merely suggesting that Halo is not an RPG. How dare you say that one of the greatest games of 2001 is not an RPG??

That is a good point, but it does miss the point because you’re not selecting Jaheira’s dialogue options.

But I don’t think that’s the most important way that Witcher 3 lacks role playing.

Well you certainly don't get to flirt with viking standins as a super hot and all powerful girl, so I see why Witcher 3 is the top dawg RPG still, and that's not even mentioning the 50 hours of RPG cinematics.

Then replace AoD in my sentence above with Underrail.

Personally? I don't think so. I do think TW3 is the second best that year tho. But if I am playing devil's advocate, these are things that Underrail did worse than TW3

    1. Underrail starts slow, painfully so. The issue is exacerbated by the fact there are a fuck ton of combat early game and early level combat in Underrail is not exciting, to say the least. Combine that with fuck ton of back-tracking as well and you ended up with heavy early game fatigue.

    2. Underrail has a lot to say (dialogue) without actually saying anything much. They are fluffs the freshen up the world, sure but at most they are OK.

    3. Underrail economy, especially early game to mid-game, that encourages backtracking for selling loot/collecting crafting mats.

    4. Character progression, especially on Oddities mode is slow. A lot of early game combat yielding no EXP further deepens the feeling that early game is incredibly sluggish. Itemization is also fairly slow due to the economy, made worse by previous factors (backtracking, lot of combat, etc)

    5. There is no strong hook plot-wise, at least not for the first few hours. This exacerbates the above-mentioned issues

5a. Before you argue, yes, it is a game design job to keep players hooked to a game one way or another. Fallout did this through the settings as mechanics-wise early game is also very slow to develop. On the other hand, Fallout also has fewer painfully numerous combat early so it works on Fallout favor. Also, compare this to ATOM, another FO inspired CRPG. Character development feels far more impactful earlier, there is less overall trash combat. There are fewer back-trackings.

    6. The overall narrative is more compelling in TW3. Characterizations are also better. Yes, I am a storyfag.

Now Underrail pays those problem offs in the mid to the final of the game at least on the feeling of having good exploration and how they respond to your build. But getting there is hard. Narrative wise TW3 still beats Underrail tho.

Hating on TW3 is such a low-hanging fruit. You made an observation that TW3 is not a hardcore turn-based RPG with a complex skill system? Wooow, what a discovery!

Classic RPG design is an acquired taste, not something people fall in love with at first sight. A taste I never really acquired, actually. So you know fucking what? I had a lot more fun with TW3 than with AoD or Underrail. Just like people generally have more fun having sex with good-looking chicks rather than chicks with "good personality". Cry me a river. Life is too short to get into Underrail or to pretend you actually had fun in AoD.

    Agreed...

    Still, agreed...

Ok, let's not get carried away, ok? Underrail and AoD are still great games and quality RPGs. It's just Witcher 3, especially with expansions, is so good ;)

Yeah, I was trolling a little with that. But still, enjoying AoD and Underrail is an acquired taste. Enjoying TW3 is not, as it is immediately enjoyable. You cannot shame someone for preferring TW3, which is might even be the best truly mainstream (casual) RPG of all time.

Highly debatable. I really liked The Bitcher 1, so much that I forgave the silly combat and constrained character development, yet I patiently waited til the complete edition of the third had a low price to get it, having been drawn into the hype for about three years. Oh, I was so excited when it started... and after some three hours of trying to get into it I quitted, never touching it again to the point of becoming oblivious to its presence in my hard drive until I noticed it many months after and considered whether it was worth another shot -and decided to uninstall it instead. Twenty euros to the trash can.
Such popamole games are an acquired taste, some of us are overwhelmed by the pointlessness of riding from A to Z and back again while pressing feint over and over -the prospect of doing this for God knows how many hours horrified me and couldn't be bothered to finish even the very first act. I could never get into MMOs or Diablo 2 clickfests either; acquired tastes.
I don't know about AoD and Underrail, but amongst modern RPGs Grimoire is love at first sight.

As for whether a computer game is a RPG or not: is its design inspired by that of Wizardry? is it by Ultima? by Pool of Radiance?
If the answers to all three questions are negative, it is not a RPG.

I never hated on TW3, I was responding to the quoted spreadsheet, which had Codexers rating TW3 higher as an RPG than AoD. It doesn’t really matter to me, you could replace AoD with Underrail, POE, or any other RPG, and I was pointing out the retardation that is complaining about decline, and then rating TW3 as the best RPG since 2012. So, this thread that was created (not by me) sort of threw things out of context because my point was always this: why would people on the Codex, who always complain about the general decline of RPGs, go on to rate TW3 as the best RPG since 2012, when there are many, many examples of incline RPGs since 2012? Underrail, AoD, D:OS, PoE, the Shadowrun games, Wasteland 2, etc.

I really like W3, but it is the best example of RPG decline that I have ever seen. Of course it is enjoyable. It’s got some of the highest production values of any game around, regardless of genre. But it is an extremely dumbed down RPG, if you can even it call it one.

I'm on record saying everything's a hybrid and these terms are meaningless, but I found Witcher 3 pretty disappointing because of its Assassin's Creed style follow-the-marker in an empty open world quest design. Has very little to do with how "RPG" it is.

Buddy, the Codex got the acceptance stage of grief for the decline like a dacede ago. Stop pandering.
The Witcher 3 being the best example of decline? Wow, so much edge.

!!!. Especially since content is incredibly repetitive. Occasionally there are quests sprinkled in like the three Swamp Witches. the Rat Tower and the Bloody Baron which are insanely good and amongst the best in the industry. But the game spams you with so much shit in between it expects you to do like clearing fucking ghoul nests. I think Velen is enjoyable, Novigrad pushes the boundary and Skellige is boring. I only played those games because the books are amazing in the first place, and I enjoyed W2 the most. But they are average console rpgs, nothing exciting for those savy in the genre.

So much edge to say that W3 is decline? Maybe you should spend some time outside if you think that is an edgy opinion.

Who exactly am I pandering to, in your opinion?

witcher 3 entertaining 20 hours or so till it gets boring. Age of decadance is a visual novel quality game where you got to save load all the time due to stupid design decisions and with a tacked on rng heavy combat system. Age of decadence you don't get bored with cause you are never having fun until you beat the game and say to yourself "finally this stupid shit is over" and uninstall.

So edgy. Haha you need to spend some time off the internet if that triggers you so hard. It’s not that edgy of an opinion.
