Just looks at this shelf, either the games are complete shit, or they are just mediocre but already have a sequel, so people will buy the sequel instead. You certainly won't find people buying those as "new games" at $50 at store, and neither as "used games" at $20 anymore after some (very short) time.

This been said to death here, people buy games at launch and sell then a week later because they already did everything there is in the game or got disapointed at it's shittyness. Make great and replayable games and people will treasure then and will still keep comming back 10 years later, not sell a week later due boredom. Problem is you can't do that, can you Mr. Denis?

The best part is that they DID make games people enjoy playing 10 years later... Though to be honest, after those two it's been major downhill.

Quick look says that's true for them all except Blue Dragon, which is supposedly "OK".

I garantee you is one of the blandest JRPGs I ever played, "OK" is what the hype of "OMG FF creator and DBZ creator!" managed to boost this horribe Dragon Quest wannabee.

Bought it at launch, but didn't even managed to finish it, sold it used to kill the industry. :smug:

The "supposedly" is because I've never played it and only have jRPG fans (and not people like me who like the odd exceptional jRPG) thoughts to go by.

Just remembered it does have a pseudo-sequel spinoff thiny on the DS (yeah, MS has this strange idea that Nintendo systems aren't something you buy "instead" of an Xbox and lets their IPs on Nintendo's portables and has even told people to get an 360 and Wii over a PS3.)

Blood Omen and Eternal Darkness. Dunno about the DOS games they made before that, I'm going to go out on a limb and presume these two were the classics they made. But what's without doubt is that after those two it's only been decline.

Yea, Obsidian didn't get any slice of NV's commercial mega-success.

F:NV probably got most of it's sales due to the F3 fan base. Furthermore Obsidian didn't make the engine, Beth did. Asides from barely losing the metacritic bonus, I wouldn't say Obsidian was ripped off - Bethesda had more to do with the game's success so they have a right to a larger piece of the pie. And anyways, Obsidian agreed to the deal in the first place, so obviously they didn't think it was so bad.

As for Denis... well that guy is just a moron who can't accept his own flaws, so he blames everyone else. His company has shrunk from 200-300 employees to only 40. The massive decline correlates with the flop Too Human and his shitflinging on forums (which probably scared off potential investors). So at this point I think its safe to say that the guy is an incompetent douche who gets what he deserves.

I'm sorry that instead of staying on with Nintendo to make Eternal Darkness 2 you decided to go where the "money" was in order to make the mega failure Too Human, but don't blame used games for that. I can think of ninety-seven better things to blame: the employees who never shot you when you broke the news.

F:NV has a (slightly) higher user review score on metacritic than F3, so it's arguable that Obsidian made a better game than Bethesda did in the eyes of the people who actually matter (the customers).

I don't recall Silicon Knights making a good game for over 15 years. They might want to work on that before complaining about used sales, which exist in literally every creative industry.

Eternal Darkness was good I heard, but everythinbg else that followed was shit.

News is however that SK is now working on ED2 for Wii U.

Well it isn't completely confirmed, but when you say
1: you are working on "returning to [your] roots" with the "most requested" title for the "next generation"
2: you confirm ED2 is "highly requested"
3: An ex-employee lists Wii U SDK on his resumue

You don't really have anything else you can claim to be making.

I'm pretty sure they're just the fall guy. The next gen consoles won't have anti-used game protections because Silicon Knights said so, but become the big boys said so, and they are keeping quiet not to attract any bad publicity.

They aren't keeping quiet, they are making HUGE and very clear push with the idea, but through the mouth of others. Denis is just a puppet, as is Kotaku with their "Five Reasons A World Without Used Games Might Not Be So Bad" and Penny Arcade, and much more to come.

They are getting consumers used to the idea, the asses of the industry are just preparing terrain and pushing the chariot for their masters to arrive and declare that the rumor is actually true (duh).

Good text, but could use a little more about the quality of the games and the sequel-o-rama tactics that kills the point of buying FIFA 08 when FIFA 09,10,11 & 12 are out there.

I think that's one reason we never saw the demise of single-player, narrative-based games, despite the predictions of retarded marketing droids in the late 90's who were impressed by Quake3 and Unreal Tournament. The sequels don't make them obsolete.

Oh wait. They're still saying it. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ie=UTF-8&ion=1#hl=en&safe=off&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=single player games dead&oq=&aq=&aqi=&aql=&gs_l=&pbx=1&fp=1&ion=1&biw=1613&bih=1075&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&cad=b

Lately we've been seeing some made obsolete by prequels.

The best way to avoid competing with yourself is making games that aren't just one shot stories to be played through (to avoid trade-ins) and that aren't just one of the series of iterations of essentially the same game (as you're competing with your own prequels).
