So it's finally out. Didn't even know, since the release date seemed to be in air all the time. Any thoughts yet? I still could get it for 10$ discount, since I own the previous ones.

Is $40 the discounted price? I have Trinity on Steam but it doesn't seem to show whether or not the discount is effective.

30$ should be the discounted price.

Not so promising comments
http://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/426723

Seem like it has very little new content.
I'd definitely agree that for those who already own Trinity, it's pretty poor value content wise. That's not to say it's bad, just that the extent of the additions feels comparable to a not so significant mod, barely more notable than the 'micro-expansions" that came before.

Personally, I don't really care, new stuff is new stuff and since Sins is probably the only game that has stayed consistently in my rotation for 4 years, I'm happy with anything being updated. But if someone thinking about it asks me for an objective opinion, definitely over priced for the content.

Yeah, if you owned trinity already than you bought 75% of the game again. In my opinion the micro expansions were a much better model. The $10 discount they gave previous customers should have been at least $20 for it to be fair I think, but then I still got it anyways knowing that so I suppose its a method that certainly works.

Also, Steamworks. :/

Still no SP campaign I'm afraid ^

Otherwise having got the game and playing the beta on/off in the last few weeks:

-Content wise it's light. It's no exageration to say most sins mod added new stuff (and in case of maelstorm mod not only added titans, but also SUPER titans too, and 3 new races whilst we are at it), but I believe this is the fault of MP.
The faction system I'd compare it to company of heroes doctrines in that as you tech up a factions unique abilities you will be encouraged to invest in that factions prefered playstyle (loyalist TEC can build 2 starbases eventually+sturdier buildings, so whilst nothing prohibits you from not building defences, you'd be an absolute fool not to invest heavily in what your faction does best). Vasari imo is the race which has the most radical faction differences: loyalist vasari can eventually become a migrant fleet which doesn't need planets to thrive and rebel vasari can allow team mates to use their phase gates (in an MP game this is a massive deal).

Ah but capital ships can now go up to lvl4 in a skill, with the maximum level cap of 10 still being in play. This means you actually have some
C n' C in regards to how you develop your capitals

-Some new victory conditions: holding a certain planet for 20 mins or each player getting an uber strong cap which if lost means a game over.
Spices up the games somewhat though i feel the neutral fleet defending the victory planet is too weak atm (moo2 guardian it is not, just an average size vasari fleet in the games ive played)

-Technical improvements. Apparently there's new shaders and technical stuff going on. Im saying apparently because i usually play with graphic mods anyways so couldn't see how big of a leap it was from vanilla sins to this new game.

Is it worth the purchase? Depends how much of a stardock fanboy/girl you are i guess. As a previous poster mentioned, if you have all the previous sins you already own most of what this expansion has anyways, so your call if the above seems worthy of the expenses.
It's worth noting that stardock is banking big on either this new sins or the upcoming elemental fallen enchantress being a big hit.

Just gonna shit this thread up by saying Sword of the Stars is far better than Sins of a Solar Empire, and faster to play despite being turn based, and handles spaceporn far better with the combat. :rpgcodex:

Also, what the fuck. Rebellion says it requires a Stardock.com account. I thought since Stardock dropped Impulse and are selling this as Steamworks there wouldn't be any of that shit.

No SP campaign.

Biggest problem of the game is in my eyes the lack of a match making system. Currently there are like 300 people just sitting in the lobby.

Anyway, right now the game is unplayable in MP due to desync etc. but if IC irons out their launch issues I would be down for a game of codex space domination.

SotS and SoaSE are two radically different games. The former is a 4x, the latter is WC3 in space.

SD.com account has nothing to do with Impulse and is just needed for multiplayer.

I like both games. What's wrong with SoaSE?
This is my own experience and not a Skyway declaration of shit for everyone, but I found SoaSE too slow for an RTS and TBS. Found I fairly regularly was sitting around waiting for resources to accumulate, which RTS is generally fast enough not to have that issue and TBS can let you hammer end turn to get past times when you're waiting. I also wasn't fond of the ship combat, where they pile up in stationary lines and shoot back and forth. Didn't have the feel of motion of, say, Homeworld, or the feel of weight (And hell, motion again) in SotS.

So in the end I didn't particularly like the non-combat parts and found the combat kinda unsatisfying and it soured me on the whole thing. That coupled with a dislike of Stardock made me pissy. Never played with the mini-expansions, so maybe they improved it and maybe Rebellion did too.

The "soase with new ships" description is quite accurate. It's not enough to make me play it again like I did in the original and 40$ is a total steal, even consisdering it's a standalone game. Biggest disappointment of the year for me so far. At least it's still pretty.

Thanks a lot for this Multi-Headed Cow, I don't get enough hate for SoaSE in the Steam chat. The game has had 2 expansion packs and another huge release just now so clearly it has a fanbase, if you want to hate it don't do it in this thread.

Having played Rebellion, I like it. There are subtle changes here and there, and it does appear content light however the game is substantially less than $40 if you legally own previous versions of it (er...). For everyone else it's a good buy. The best part about this new release is clearly the MP because the new abilities and ships are so amazing for pulling strategies. Overall it's just a great excuse to keep playing.

This. It's not a terrible game, but after playing about two matches with my friends I lost any desire to ever play it again. Long stretches of waiting combined with pretty boring fights, with the only strategy being where you focus your fire.

Okay, tested it and will not definitely buy. Seems like it really has new content similar to the previous 10$ DLC's. Many mods already added much more content.

Think mods are going to be the only real reason for non MP sins players to ever get this when its on a steam sale or w/e.
All the big mods from previous sins will be ported, and the technical updates will be applied (especially in regards to max level cap inc for abilities, these values was hardcoded in previous sins and was no way to change it :\ )

I dunno how reviews and such are reacting to rebellion, but i can't see reception for what is mostly a technical update expansion to be as warmly received as previous games was. I certainly feel a bit short changed myself, we weren't sure whether to even expect a new sins game and this is all we got? Meh.

Warning, butthurt incoming.

Fuck Brad Wardell and Fuck Stardock. I've paid for every one of their games to date and now they are dead to me.

There is actually a long and bitter story behind SDs choice for Steam. Stardock has released an awful many games they never got any money for because either the publisher went bancrupt or was a crook. That's why they stick to release their games by themselves now and that implies digital distribution.

:(

It sounded so good on paper (or really my LCD, but still...)

Also SoaSE. Was nice for a few games, but got boring pretty fast. It really lacked a SP campaign, and for multiplayer it seemed too slow (yeah raw, I know, set game speed to faster...) on anything but small maps.
