No, the decline started with the advent of the Xbox in 2001. That's were the industry got infiltrated by hipster dipshits that thought they could earn big bucks by bullshitting devs and customers alike.

I never tried even Bioshock and considering this will be even more dumbed down and dumb movie-like, why should I give a fuck?

Who started the Codex meme that Bioshock, of all franchises, is "dumb movie like"? It felt less scripted to me than Half-Life, for instance. With more-or-less non-linear levels.

Bioshock Infinite might be different, though.

Bioshock had an awesome awesome atmosphere, it was a decent game. Nowhere near the brilliance of system shock 2 of course but still decent.

Don't know why it is that hated. Who cares about a story in an FPS anyway.

I don't think anyone hates Bioshock -- they (myself included) just hate the hype that surrounds it. It's a mediocre at best console shooter.

For the first or so hour. I remember liking Bioshock up until after beating the crazy plastic surgeon. After that it all pretty much went downhill, not to mention how I kept going 'OH NO YOU DIDN'T' nearly every 10 minutes, when I was noticing all the shit that was shamelessly bastardised from SS2. And after those 9736987346983746 predictable (and 1 not predictable) plot twists happened all in ONE cutscene, I decided it's fucking enough.

I could never get mouse movement to feel right in Bioshock so it was almost unplayable for me.

It's mediocre, and then descends into utter shite during later parts (e.g. less interesting environments, the Big Daddy surrogate etc.). Personally I preferred Bioshock 2, which at least had some cool horde and miniboss fights. They changed the way I approached each new level, since I needed to be thinking about how I would be using it as a battlefield later on. Sadly, B2 also declined towards the end by simply throwing Prototype Big Daddies at you every few rooms.

Yes, as I've said before, Bioshock 2 is one of the few games that :obviously: people like more than the unwashed popamole masses.
Why did Bioshock 2 get a bad rep, anyway? Probably because lots of dumbass gaming "journalists" immediately decided that "RECYCLED SETTING --> 7/10"

Pretty much. It wasn't made by a FAMUSS VIDYA GAEM VISHUNARY-DJINNIUS, so it didn't make retards feel clever by liking it. I even thought the characters were better written in B2.

Got to love the implication of the name that actual thought requirements are over a decade out of date.

It is a pretty peculiar name. Why not just call it "Hardcore Mode" or "Classic Mode"?

Yeah, huh? Maybe they should have called it "System Shock 2 mode" or "Good Game" mode. It loads SS2 on start up

Normal mode could be called "Shit", too. Not Shit mode, just "Shit". Welcome to Rapture argluahgluahgluah

Indeed, I don't care either. I did feel, however, that it failed to keep up with certain basic advancements in mechanics of singleplayer shooters of the 2006-07 years, so playing it right after STALKER and Crysis made the game feel disappointing. Plus, I am not the biggest fan of "Find X widgets and Y whatchamacallits" style goals or any puzzle solving in FPS games. However, BioShock would have felt much more fun in 2004.

Well, story's kinda important when everything else is rather poor. I mean, you have to do something right. It's not as if it had good gunplay or interesting game mechanics. So in the end you're left with a game which does poorly in all areas except atmosphere, and even that wasn't particularly good compared to, say, Stalker( which also happened to do everything else better as well).

I appreciate the effort, but this was exactly how they marketed the first BioShock. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't directly inspired by the "Give Me Deus Ex" option in Human Revolution, which probably led to a number of additional sales. I'll wait and see how this actually impacts the game.

Being forced to make upgrade choices from a limited pool of resources, forcing specialization to survive = good. Being forced to conserve ammunition and deciding whether to take an encounter on or try to get around it some other way = great. Weapons with significant strengths and weaknesses, as well as enemies who may be resistant or immune to certain types = better. No glowing objects, quest arrows, and so on = fantastic.

However, I have a hard time believing they'll actually be bothering to balance the game for this mode, or even going this far... from what it sounds, you'll have limited save slots and no respec option. That's a step in the right direction but it's still not exactly what I'd call "old school mode", more like "slightly less idiotic mode." Cutting out features and adjusting item drop rates makes a difference, but only if the game has been designed with that in mind.

For what it's worth, I liked BioShock. The intro and first few levels were excellent because resource management still mattered at that point and you weren't a super-human killer, it had excellent atmosphere and some pretty memorable characters. The shooting sucked, though, and the plot was a whole lot of nothing - well-told (before the endgame), but way too simple for its own good. Infinite looks like it could be really damn impressive based on what they've shown, but I doubt 2K will have the guts to be truly adventurous with the design.

Maybe for Fallout 4, Todd and Pete will take the idea of New Vegas' "hardcore mode" from Obsidian and rename it "1997 mode"...

I demand 2001 difficulty, but 2000 will do too. If that's too hard he can do 1998 mode.

I've just thought of something... If you're playing a game from 1998 or before, does "1999 mode" make it more popamole instead?

And likewise, will they include a "2025 mode" in new games, where you just press A to win the game and all the DLC?
