I think the most important thing for RPG combat is not to be too unpleasant and to be resolved in short order. For a plot/adventure style RPG anyway, obviously this doesn't apply to your dungeon crawler style like IWD.

One of the coolest moments in my gaming experience was running away through the casino in New Reno after banging boss's wife and daughter. Bullets were flying in every direction killing everyone and everything, but I had 10 AP because I took a lot of drugs, so I could avoid most of the damage and get out of the joint quickly.
Then I found out I was addicted. That was so fucking cool :)

I don't think this experience could be the same with RTwP. Can bullets even hit anything other then their target in RTwP?

Maybe you were over-equipped, power armor fighting rats?

Tanking is risky, crits bypass armor, no such thing as invincible tank in Fallout.

When I did the Glow, I read that there is huge radiation there, but I thought: meh, I will be good if I take same Rad-away AFTER doing every stuff. Hah. Result: after finishing the Glow, I had to reload, and do the whole thing AGAIN, because I was so radiated, that I died every time I tried to leave the place. Stupid me. Lesson: if the game tells you that this place is highly radiated, you better believe it. :D

Fallout 1 is not overrated at all.
The story is awesome, definitively the cRPG that surprise me the most.
After playing endless heroic fantasy cRPG everything was new and i couldn't anticipate anything.
Ghouls/super mutant/brahmine/power armor/deathclaw/stimpack everything was so original and unexpected that i could not stop playing to discover what will happen next.
Sure if you play it now after F3 or FNV it would not surprise you as much, but the setting was truly revolutionary for his time (i did not knew Wasteland but still)
Awesome graphics and atmosphere and music and.... too.
I agree the combat is simplistic but i love it.
I even think the combat is perfect for this game (despite the fact i love JA2 too) but i played it mostly solo.

Yeah, sure, on the Codex.

Back to topic. Fallout 1 has a useless journal. Most of the sidequest are not registered in it. There was a time, when I took a few weeks off from playing the game, and when I got back, wanted to refresh my memory. And it contained almost no entries about the missions, yet I remembered that I surely found a lot of them.

RTwP wouldn't fit called attacks with critical hits and critical hit descriptions which made this system better than vast majority of shitty cRPG combat systems.
Of course, it's 10x worse than the GURPS Fallout system would be, but fuck, compared to stand back and watch warrior swing his blade in general direction of the enemy of IE engine games, it's a true masterpiece.

I'm surprised that people are complaining about Fallout's combat system when the only cRPG with better one is JA2.

If you liked the "Oops x was hit instead of y" in Fallout then you will LOVE Jagged Alliance 2 ricochet kills.

Many roguelikes, and many d20-based games are better than Fallout by far.

Why would anyone use companions in Fallout? You can take out everything by yourself (unless you're ~role playing~ in which case your bad-at-combat character shouldn't be attempting to kill things).

Wiping out the raider camp was fun 4 me. More satisfying than using the win-button speech option or trading money and items for Tandi like a sucker.

After that the fun death animations are the only motivation.

Which of them had aimed attacks with critical hits influenced by hit location and with nice critical hit descriptions?

That shit doesn't matter much when there's no reason to use anything but "aim for head". Even when I played this the first time and didn't get it I got by JUST fine by not aiming at all.

If your options has no meaningful place within your system, they might as well not be there at all. In Fallout, most of them was just there to have something to laugh at or use for kicks in fights that were sure wins anyway.

This is actually true of almost anything in Fallout, especially the character system as well. Shitty design from A to B. But I guess since they had to abandon GURPS midway through they were in a hurry to come up with something. A pity that the simplified nonsense that is S.P.E.C.I.A.L survived through F2 to Lionheart to F3 and NV.

Ian is at first quite helpful, providing you don't give him any burst-capable weapons, makes a good mule. Tycho is ok, too. Dogmeat. I tend to leave the companions behind when things get heavy, but it can be funny trying to keep them alive.

In Fallout 2 companions are much more helpful, you can have Vic and Cassidy waving around gauss weapons, and Sulik with .223 or powerfist. I tend not to take Marcus, he tends to TPK with the mini-gun and he can't wear power armor.

Lol companions. You're the most badassest motherfucker in the wastes, you don't need companions! At least in FO2 you can sell them to Metzger, that was p. cool.

With Fallout 2 I liked having companions around as pack mules but I wouldn't have them stealing my kills.
