Fallout So, Fallout 1....I'm raging so hard now.

  1. LOL you didn't install the community patch?

Also, I liked Fallout's combat. I was kind of a RPG noob when I first played it, and it was simple enough that it didn't scare me away. Also it was a good introduction and prepared me for tactical combat in JA2.

Fallout is probably the truest cRPG ever created. Yeah, it has its flaws, yeah the combat could be better, yeah PST has better writing (but 99% of other crpgs have worse writing), but the thing is fallout has one of the most amazingly constructed settings, and its whole design is so brilliantly layered that you feel like you're playing against an actual DM who makes the whole world react to your choices. And almost no other games have managed to pull this off (Arcanum almost did it, but not as competently as Fallout). I initially played Fallout after playing the IE games and at first it was a bit hard to get into it, but eventually I loved it. I feel sorry for all those who can't get into the game for various reasons because they're missing a fantastic experience and if you enjoy it the first time you finish it, you'll surely enjoy replaying it many times, trying out different builds and choices.

    123. Fallout is a fantastic game and such a tight, masterfully executed experience. The combat isn't the greatest but the gory deaths and witty quips make it so entertaining, the world and its atmosphere is so suffocating and, I dunno, IMMERSHUN. Nothing that hasn't been said before about Fallout of course. But I totally agree with that first sentence especially. Fallout is the prime example of a game that isn't a flawed gem; it excels at everything it does.

Can you prove an example when you need to do this in Fallout?

To cheese some enemies, shooting them over a corner and moving into cover every turn. Also, to line up people nicely for a burst.

Fights against enemies like aliens or centaurs also work better by running like a coward and shooting.

In Fallout 2, there are several fights actually where you can save yourself from getting killed by positioning yourself behind cover and ducking in and out. One example is the fight in the Den where you have to help the girl and her gang fight the other gang. I died a lot in that fight at first, but hiding behind the other gang members makes it fairly likely that they'll get hit instead of you so I was eventually able to do it. Actually, positioning can be pretty important for a character with a really low strength/endurance.

Yes! That's stated perfectly how I've always felt about my first times with both Fallout games.

Fight Mertzger gang relatively early (before metal armor). You need to lock the door to cut their numbers in half. Stand a correct places to not be shot by the ones outside...

EDIT: and no, Fallout 1 is a mediocre game. The polishing Fallout 2 get make it standing where it is. F1 is just food for nostalgic fags. And I've alway said so.

Probably the building where you rescue the Brotherhood initiate in the Hub. I got slaughtered by those guys but I figured out that popping around the corners of the building did the trick.

Fallout 2 combat sucks because it thinks Fallout combat is fun in itself, hence giant dungeon crawls without adventure game methods to skip 'em and time-wasting companions that aren't supposed to get instantly gibbed in the first combat you get into after picking them up

Then you got FOT which removes most of the armor bypass octuple damage critical stuff and you get to see the gunplay system minus random hyperlolz. And it's shallow and boring and stretched thin out into a game that's like 3x too long.

    Fuck you. :smug:

Exactly. Fallout 2 did offer a lot of improvements on the first game in terms of interface and the variety of random encounters, and it did a great job at providing a larger world to fuck around in. The problem is, they went overboard. It's a bloated game with too much combat coupled with generally uninteresting encounter design. Still a very fun game, but better than the first? No. Fallout was a fantastic game from start to finish and it didn't bother with filler content.

This is not the same codex I fell in love with... I mean, I'm not even a big fallout wanker here, but If you think Baldur's Gate is a better cRPG than Fallout then I fucking hate you and your shitty uninspired D&D JRPG with RTwP combat. :decline:

    Everything is shit.

Now wait a minute. People started to distort my views on the game. Read my first post dammit. I said that it is a great world, great story, great characters, great C&C, detailed character development. I only said that the combat is mediocre and the ally AI is shit. Oh and it is buggy. I didn't say that the game is bad FFS. It is a GOOD game, just not as good as I hoped. I also didn't say that the game would be better in RTwP. I just said that PST's combat, although not particulary good, takes less time because of the real time and the controllable party members.

Fuck, fuck. fuck. Fuckstick fucking fuckity fuck. I thought you were cool J_C

Way to pick arbitrary categories to use to make poor point.

What if I want a RPG that supports multiple character archetypes and allows multiple non-combat solutions to every plot important quest? What's better than Fallout then? I don't know you define "quirky setting" so that someone who enjoys the Fallout universe would instantly think Planescape is a better one.
Baldur's Gate better than Fallout?! :x

Infinitron, Grunker, J_C, you're all off my bro list.

Don't be too hard on J_C, his copy is apparently several orders of magnitude buggier than the version we all played, and since replayed to death at regular intervals.
Heck, even the non-GoG copy he tried to play numerous times on prior occasions.

I've finished Fallout 7² times, my runs pretty evenly distributed between the original retail version and the later 1.1 version, and my last run was a few years ago.
And I've never encountered anything game-breaking, even when I suffered through it in wine*.
Actually that's a lie, I do know of some game-breaking issues, but they all require cheating to even be possible.

2: actual number is somewhere closer to 20
*: cursor acted weird, and it was rendering at 10FPS at best; really unpleasant experience overall
