SC tries to be deep? I thought it was well aware of its role as a beat-em-'up for button-mashing retards.

Nah, it tries pretty hard to keep an image of being "deep and hardcore", and its fanboys try so very hard to assert that. Because, you know, having a million redundant pre-canned combos, side-stepping and an awkward parry mechanic is HARDCORE.

EDIT: Though due to the indepth character creation system, I'm still probably gonna end up getting it (it's a bad habit I have, I have tons of wrestling games solely because of this feature) and then populate the game with Warhammer characters.

2's speed (or similar), dat customization and battle theatre (at least CPU vs CPU anyways) returns?

If nothing else, hours of screwing around watching various fictional characters fight eachother.

I think the biggest shame for the series is that they didn't ditch the whole earlier cast and arcade entirely, and focus on developing the Chronicles Of The Sword mode from 3.

CotS was fun, though it was not something I'd buy as a full game without MASSIVE improvements.

Indeed. One thing it had wrong was the challenge curve, which got really fucked up by the final half when you join the rebels.

But it was a lot more interesting than the bullshit you got with Arcade and Story mode, due to how eye-gougingly BORING the entire roster is (not to mention the presence of blatant shitty rip-offs).

It wasn't a "challenge" at all! The enemies either cheat (battle) were smart resulting in boring levels (rushing at the start of the chapter with everyone is the best move with their options, but the rest of the chapter is one long boring thing of nothing till the boss.

    How was SC3's roster boring?

Indeed, and that's why the challenge curve was fucked up: The AI just starts cheating all the time. Similar problem was with the optional boss encounters, which were just about being able to spam without getting hit back (the type of spam depending on the stage).

And Soul Calibur roster is utter shit, just like Namco's rosters always are. They're unmemorable, have the character of a plank of wood, generic and without any distinct moves or fighting style (on a genre level, no in-game level). And of course, the backstories are a load of shit.

Totally going to end up with this for the character customization too. Those things are just fun as fuck to play around with.

If it gets back towards 2 for the actual fights, so much the better.

No, if it ditches Namco's shitty game entirely and goes for a traditional 2D approach or something actually 3D like what was tried in One Must Fall: Battlegrounds, then the fights will be good.

Yup. I'm really impressed by how much they've expanded customization since IV. Can't wait for Namco's patented obscenely-overpriced DLC.

I don't understand why people get excited about namco customization stuff. In a single player RPG I can understand it 'cause you are generally making pretend people as the point of the game, but in a MP game it's seriously just gonna be used to look bad. In fact if you used it to make something aesthetic it will paradoxically just show that you put in non-ironic effort and people will lol at you when they fight you with their character they made to look as awful as possible, including sticking as many animation-obscuring meshes and colors and sword trails on themselves as their Xboxs will allow before red-ringing, in a game where 90% of the gameplay is reacting to animations

I don't make characters for other people to look at. I just like messing around with the armour, inventing backstories or casually masturbating to them.

No fist/gauntlet fighter, so doesn't look possible.

Chronicles of the Sword 2 with this would be DAMNNNNNNN fine. Weapon Master 2 wouldn't be awful either.

    Apparently it will.

I read something saying that this was originally going to be Soul Blade 2 (a sequel to the old arcade and PSX game, of which Soul Calibur was an offshoot) then it was switched to Soul Calibur 5 for some reason. I mean it looks like Soul Calibur and doesn't have any Soul Blade features like weapon breaking; I wonder if they were originally thinking of serious engine/system changes or something and pussed out for easier sequelbux.

The admin on one of the big fan sites (he's given the reasons he knows this kind of thing and it seems legit) let slip there will be DLC characters (the community manager from NB mentioned to IGN the unlockables in the roster, 3 mimics and 1 variation of an existing character, suck because of setbacks from the earthquake, so I assume that has something to do with it), so I'm waiting.
