Now I want a super heat-efficient space u-boat of my very own.

Someone needs to merge it with Kerbal Space Program.
Someone needs to bolt Pioneer on top of it.
Fuck you people, I want it to have a child with Silent Hunter.

I don't think anyone has ever attempted a spaceship stealth combat sim.
There is no stealth in space.

You are so predictable DraQ. When talking about Space-subs I'm thinking sub-space submarines and micro-jumping.

Besides, Silent Hunter at the end of its carrier (and by that I mean SH4) tried dabbling with surface vessels.

Why would you think stealth in space wouldn't work? I'm pretty sure stuff similar to modern day sea warfare would be used. It's not like you see enemies on the sea with your own eyes, they might be 10 or 20 km away, but their torpedos might be on their way, seeing enemy in space dozens or hundreds of kilometres away would be just as difficult. On the sea you look at the radar and other devices, you don't stand on a ship looking for an enemy. This is also I'd imagine space combat in the future, not like awesum movies show with fighting jets flying all over the place and shootan dozens of missiles on a tail of the enemy 5 metres behind them... but then, maybe I'm not scalefag enough to understand the world.

Stealth in space is impossible because it's completely empty and ambient temperature is 4 Kelvin, and propulsion systems are (necessarily) extremely hot. So with a half-decent camera and a bit of analysis you can literally track the movement of every ship and missile from lightyears away

i imagine when there will be combat in space the technology might be advanced enough to conceal the temperature as seen from the outside.

but yeah, anything might happen anyway

Nah, you just drop a couple of thousand flares with the same heat signature as your ship has.

That's not stealth, more like the equivalent of barging through the door guns blazing with obvious intentions.

There's not really anything that prevents a ship from using cold propellant in a pinch, although it'd be moving a lot slower and expending more fuel to do so. Alternately, the ship could have a set of shielding plates obscuring the exhaust from most angles except directly behind it and cool its exterior at the expense of heating a core. Sort of like a reverse refrigerator. Eventually the core would get too hot and you'd need to purge the system with a subsequent spike in emission. But short-range, time-limited thermal stealth is quite feasible even with our current technology.

Also, tracking emissions from lightyears away is pretty dumb. By the time the emissions you're tracking reach your sensors, the ship will have moved on several years ago. :P

Well, you still use stealth technology to bring your detectable heat to the same level than that of a flare.

Oh yeah! New video card (And new processor, but the old video card was crashing so...) is working fine. Stress tested it in the most reasonable way: by playing Space Engine.

Hovering over trillions of planets never felt so smooth. Maybe I'll post some screenies later if I find something cool.
