Like every other game that I eventually love, I started off hating it. I first hated it because of the crappy RTS mission from the beginning (fortunately you're not forced to do them). Then I hated it because of the Hentai game missions (which I still don't like that much, but it gets me reading so I guess that's a good thing). I do appreciate some of the text missions though with respect to managing, solving math problems, and so on (it's a good break from the main part of the game). I also enjoy the writing and the vocabulary (for people older then 15 years of age) although some the translations are off (but it's minimal). This game reminds me of X-COM with respect to quality and thoughtfulness. You can tell a lot of work was put into the game.

[Edit] See if you can solve this math problem from the game.

Very good game. Not only combines a lot of different game types but manages to do them all well. Anytime you get bored with doing one thing you can go on to something completely different. Nothing is really forced on you either so for example if you're not good at RTS you can ignore the planetary robot battles.

BTW Vazquez Hentai is Japanese anime porn.

I wish they'd release the text-adventures as stand-alone games. They are so awesome.

There is a cheat that allow you to pick any of those quests and play them right from main menu... cannot remember it right now, though.

Aside from a few glitches(repetitive quests, trading, combat) this game is so rich and immersive it makes you feel like playing Star Control 2 for the first time again. And on top of it all, all the text adventures are challenging and very well made. Paper + pen essential!

    In your head, obviously
Yes, Space Rangers is easily one of the most ingenious games currently available. Instead of putting lots of effort into normal-parallaxed-bumpmapped-super-311D Graphics they chose very pretty 2D graphics and a very detailed and rich universe which is very interconnected, so that no part of the game feels replaceable by some other variant. And the simplified strategy game that plays behind the scenes is also a nice addition which makes the universe feel dynamic, breathing and dangerous. Once I ended up in a system surrounded by dominator systems and my jumpdrive couldn't get me far enough to the next friendly system. Eventually this last system was taken too, despite of my (and two other ranger's) desperate defence.

However, trying to install the original russian game on an english XP is a chore: You have first to switch the entire windows to "russian mode" before the installer can create the necessary directories...

That's strange - I have fully English XP myself, but did not have any trouble with installation... *shrugs*

I think he meant that you have to have your locale set to russian or you will get garbage characters for path/file names/ in game.
