I might just get it, then. Does this include 1, like the store one does?

The reason you never download dubious .wmv files off p2p, REGARDLESS of the enticing filename.

More like they'll gut the StarForce out of it before digitally distributing it. I imagine SF gave out the tools to do so after the whole Ubisoft debacle.

Don't hold your breath. I've used Stardock a bit, since the 'it's not a rental' attitude seems promising, but even it has some potential patching issues. Third-party titles need to be repackaged for Stardock's installer client, and the same goes for any subsequent updates.

Besides that, post-release update support for both the EU and NA Space Rangers releases has been not so much atrocious as borderline non-existent, so I certainly wouldn't expect patches to remove protection from the versions that have already gone out through other publishers. The Russian version has been patched to 1.6 or thereabaouts now; the existing EU and NA publishers are still adamant that they're nagging the developers about getting the translated versions patched, but I think it's reasonably safe to assume the developers have no intention of doing so (the later Russian patches were apparently developed by a third party, since the original development team no longer exists, which I guess may mean they're under no contractual obligation to do anything about it, even assuming the original developer was). Mercifully, the translated versions were based on 1.3, anyway, so they're at least in a usable state. If you're stuck with the Starforce-protected SR2 and want to get rid of the protection, I think your best (read: only) option is to choke back any principled objections and crack it.

The only other thing about Stardock that makes me marginally hesitant is that, while its own anti-DRM stance couldn't be much clearer, it does offer protection as an option to third-party developers. I haven't come across anything that seems to use it, but it sounds like they may be offering to include Steam-like net validation on application startup to anyone that actually wants it - no big deal as long as it's made clear up-front when it's used, but I'd be irked to buy something from them only later to find it using that type of protection.

Hmmm... I know that the Direct2Drive version didn't have StarForce, but it does have its own copyright protection system. Anyways, as long as you add the crack right after installing and before you first play it the StarForce doesn't install.
