While Spore disappointed many folks interested in more than just creating dickmonsters, apparently enough people bought it to justify EA expanding the franchise into other genres. The San Diego Comic-Con 2010 schedule indicates that Maxis will use the gathering of various nerdly types to reveal action-RPG DarkSpore.

6:00-7:00 Video Game Reveal: Maxis Studio— Maxis Studio (The Sims and Spore video games) has just announced their next project, a brand new, Sci-Fi Action-RPG based on the DNA of Spore. Join key leads from the dev team, Thomas Vu, Paul Sottosanti and Lauren McHugh, for the first game reveal to the public! Room 3

This seems like a sign that Spore wasn't nearly as successful as they hoped, so now they need a quick way to cash in on the development money they've already invested.

I am morbidly curious as to what form this will take. After all, the "Creature" stage is already pretty much WoW-lite.

First Obsidian is doing Dungeon Siege III, then Maxis Studio is now suddenly an Action RPG Developer...

It's like I woke up in bizarro world or something.

Speaking of Obsidian, will they be granted the rights to make the sequel? DarkSpore 2: New Orion

    Maxis is dead.

In fact Maxis was dissolved after The Sims 2, that is why after a few expansions the Maxis logo was removed.

Spore was created by a newly established Studio they named Maxis, also it was hit by massive lay-off at the same time as Pandemic.

EA now does not "close" studios, just fires most of the workforce, re-assign the rest and keeps using the studio name.

I don't see the problem. When you're already at the bottom, the only way to go is up.

Bullshit! Probably no where enough people bought that POS even AFTER seeing Robin Williams fuck around with an alpha copy YEARS before they finally shit it out to be worth making spinoffs.

Point of fact, EA just does what it usually does, fucked up things and spent WAY too much money on it so they try to make "good" by milking it to death which is why they driver EVERY SINGLE STUDIO that they buy into the grave shortly thereafter...

    [EDIT]
EA of today is COMPLETELY capable and willing to explore new depths of mismanagement, along with their erstwhile platonic brother jowood... (and their adoring fan, 1C)

It never ceases to be hilarious how game publishers misread public sentiment.

Gamers: This Spore game sucks - it's just a series of simplistic and unrelated minigames with a WoW-lite and a RTS thrown in for good measure. Where's the complex creation of a life form using Darwininian evolution and modelling its progress that I was promised?

EA's interpretation: Spore was way too complex. Need to streamline the gameplay so gamers don't get confused. Just as fucking well we overruled the original design - players would NEVER have gone for something with that kind of complexity.

yes, dumbing-down is a plague among the gaming industry and EA seems to loooooooove it.

well that was a dumb sentence, but partially correct... i don't like shitty games that are targeted at the lowest common denominator of consumers. i happen to love games, preferably strategy and rpg's. even so much that i spend a fair amount of time working on them.

and wherever would you get such a silly idea as i don't like games? :retarded:
