Planetside 2 has managed 1200 players and can comfortably do 500. In planes, tank and other thingamies.

This was 2015.

Meanwhile 42 is a large number.

Even if we say 42 is a respectable number, the problem lies in that you can never have these epic space battles they make us believe. Let's say you have a capital ship manned by 40 humans, and then you meet another capital ship... but you actually can't because the server does not allow much more players.

Edit: at best I can imagine a duelling mode... a specific game mode, 2 teams, each one with a maximum of 25 players, each one owns a capital ship and some smaller ships, and then must destroy or board the other ship. But this would all happen in a confined space and dissolved from the rest of the universe. Not that great.

Edit2: ...now that I think about it, this could be the final state of Star Citizen in some years: a collection of different game modes, like "Deathmatch", "Racing", "Capital Ship battle" (similar to an Unreal Tournament with different game modes)... and of course the Singleplayer part. The procedurally generated universe probably taken out completely. Which wouldn't even be thaaat bad of a game package, if it weren't announced like that super-dooper-uber game. That game package could have even supported modding and LAN servers (just as it was promised at first).

42 players in a fully simulated world in simulated ships is a large number. What are you expecting, thousands of ships like in EVE online, with several minutes of lag?
EVE is a fully simulated world just as well and it can handle a few hundred players with zero lag. I'm also really curious as to what "fully simulated" means, or are you just spouting marketing bullshit?
Arma games have no player limit at all. You could have over 150 players inside fighter jets over a 270 square kilometre map and you could have the AI battling each other and figuring out situations on their own on the ground all the while. That is actually simulated, not just a few NPCs in space stations and random market change algorithms running in the background.
LOL, Arma and fightjets. There is barely any simulation in Arma regarding the jets/tanks systems. Only their physics is simulated and even that is mostly halfassed. You might call it an arcade game in that regard. Meanwhile you can look at a real simulation like DCS, where the figherjets are actually simulated, and there isn't any servers which has more than 40-50 people. And Star Citizen with all its faults promises simulated spaceships (like flight physics and the different systems of the ships).

Depends, the Tanks DLC has given the game some more complex armour simulation. It's still not the most advanced ever, but still pretty good.

Arma still has full ballistics, weather and sound simulation unlike any other.

That's pretty cool, the game came a long way since its release. I see that it actually has pretty nice simulations. Now they should simulate some of the handling of the systems, and it would be the armchair soldier's wet dream. :)

Arma has more simulation than SC does.

And that is how it should be. Fighter jets in space is way simpler environment to simulate. Unless you go fully retarded and start having simulated toilets and plumbing...

I expect they'll bump up the max player count soon as they add more locations in.

oh really,for how long,2minutes? look at how some of thoes ships move,like paperweights. sooner or later everything goes to shit. add a space station instead of the empty groundmap.. nomatter what part of the game i tried for months they were all loaded with gamebreaking problems never seen in other games.

Yeah but its Fully Simulated™.

At least when I'm trying to dogfight at 8 fps I can be assured that millions of CPU cycles are being wasted on tracking the moisture levels of each of the player avatars' eyeballs.

What alternate universe are you guys in where ARMA3 is able to handle 150 clients in multiplayer? Because as someone who has been playing Operation Flashpoint/ARMA for almost twenty years now, it sure as hell isn't mine. Not only would it be hell on the client performance, server performance is tied to what's taking place on the server to the point where 70 clients is pushing it.

I'm still confused by what J_C means by Fully Simulated(tm) when it comes to SC. Does the game have realistic mesh collision physics? Accurate circuitry and power physics? Are components simulated so if a part of your ship gets hit you lose like, thruster control or something? Is every bead of sweat on your avatar's body fully simulated so it rolls down your skin realistically? What level of simulation are we talking about?

Servers with 250 max players have been tried out, there's plenty of servers with 150 players on the server browser. Now all it needs is a server powerful enough to support it an all the clients being powerful enough to run it.

Well, planets and moons don't have orbits so the level of detail of full simulation is indeed astonishing.

I'm sure it'll be implemented in whatever.patch.number though, just make sure to buy a new concept sale so the development of this fully funded game can continue.

Yes, exactly that level of simulation. I'm pulling some things out of my memory here, so not all of them may be exact:

- Realistic collision physics and simulated components: they bragged a lot about how everything moves and rotates physically correct on the ship. And when a part of it was bombed away, then the whole ship would realistically move according to the damage or missing ship parts of the ship. Or if you lose a thruster then your ship will twirl physically correct around or so.

- Circuitry and power physics: I believe they said something about how the powerlines within the ship are realistically simulated in that if you damage a part of the ship where the powerline is, the connected areas on that ship lose power as well.

- Bead of sweat on your body simulated: they said something about simulated blood pressure on your NPC and your avatars, and you see their veins swelling up, or they face become red because of realistic blood pressure physics etc.
