Thanks, MetalCraze. I now realize that all the DOS games I've been playing on DOSbox and ScummVM over the years are unplayably blurry, and that enjoying classic pixelated graphics more than terrible fan art makes me a hipster.

I think I'll start playing The DeviantART Masters right now, actually.

The irony is that new art is barely any different from the original one.

That they ultimately haven't changed anything but resolution is the real problem.

Perhaps if your taste in art is similar to a twelve-year-old's taste in music. Star Control 2's art was pixelated, but the original assets were created by a talented artist/team of artists, and it showed.

The art in this remake is serviceable, yes, but it is an amateurish paint-over of the pixelated versions of those original art assets, a copy of a down-conversion. This is blatantly obvious. If the modders enjoyed making it and you enjoy playing it, that's quite all right by me, but I find pixel graphics accompanied by good art direction very enjoyable (even when there's no one watching!), so this is basically useless to me.

I don't get fan projects like this. It's not even a re-imagining of the original -- it's literally just making the graphics crisper. Kinda lame.

So when it's low res - it's an art that can only be admired by monocled gentlemen but when some dudes just redraw same art in higher resolution it suddenly becomes shit for 12 years olds?

High resolution - for children. Blurry pixels - for grown ups.

Hipster faggotry and hipocrisy to da max.

In addition to not knowing what "hipster" actually means, you clearly don't know the definition of "hypocrisy", either—nor do you even know how to spell the word properly.

Just call me a faggot or some other insult more appropriate to your level of education. Doesn't matter whether you're a native English speaker or not; if you don't know what a word means, you have no business using it.

As the Codex's official biggest SC2 fanfag (the original, before Blizztards stole the abbreviation for their stupid shit), even I'm not impressed by this.

Remaking the graphics in Star Control 2 in higher resolution achieves nothing. A complete re-imagining might be somewhat interesting, provided it's done well but this seems to be equivalent to re-filming Citizen Kane with better props or re-printing H.G. Wells' The Time Machine on higher quality paper. It doesn't take anything away from the original and yes it's technically an improvement but it completely misses the point of what made the damn thing so good in the first place. It's the best-case scenario when fucking with a classic.

Gotta go with skyway on this one, believe it or not faggots flat panels are actually a THING in 2013, and no i'm not digging out a fucking CRT or having one taking up space.

"Remaking the graphics in Star Control 2 in higher resolution achieves nothing"

it achieves letting you play the game without staring at pixels the size of the house-bricks. This is a good mod, this is a useful mod.

So does setting the scaler options properly in stock UQM. It looks pretty smooth on my e-peen-extending 32-inch display.

And even if it did look like shit, it doesn't matter, which was kind of the point earlier.

Setting the remake argument aside (because I don't give a shit at this point, and everyone's entitled to their opinion), digging out the CRT and setting up speakers (if you use a headset normally) does do wonders for old DOS and Amiga games. I last bothered with the CRT and speakers when playing through Master of Orion 2 again, and was transported right back to the 1990s.

If you can't be bothered, then you can't be bothered, but I recommend trying it if you have the opportunity.

Heh, I had a CRT till one or two years ago (wait, actually I had it till 2009... it's 2013 already. Fuck, time flies...) but that alone didn't give me the good old 1990s feeling.

What really did do it was digging out my old PC from 1990, switching that beast on, digging out some old floppies of M&M3 and EoB and installing them - it took minutes to install these games and the floppy drive made loud noises thoughout - then starting and playing them.
I never thought I'd have the patience for stuff like manual map drawing and taking notes on a piece of paper again, but sitting in front of that tiny CRT, with a clunky old keyboard and mouse on my desk and the loud sounds of an old computer droning in my ears... it was all back again. That whole feeling of my childhood.

    Oh gods its heavan

Skybro, I dunno if it's just you were some douchebag rich kid who had a $1000 monitor in 1995 or that you've caught the brain fog or something, but I don't recall CRTs being exactly "crisp". Just use integral scaling and deal with the borders.

People here should've done some research before starting to hate blindly. I mean, Unkillable Cat has already mentioned in the thread that this is a project of the same people (more or less) who make project6014, but I guess no one bothered to fucking google it out. Well, let me correct this:

    https://code.google.com/p/project6014/

Here, see? The guys are making a proper Star Control 3, basically (while totally ignoring the stupid, stupid, stupid third part). And, while I don't know their full story, I think it went like this - they though "hey, dudes, as we already have our engine tuned up and all of the assets ready, why don't we also remake original star control with modernized graphics, just for the shit and giggles?" After all, it's not like evangelizing the newfag crowds in oldschool gameplay with modernized graphics is such a bad idea - if you don't educate people, how do you expect them to become smarter?

So what do those words mean in your head since you are completely incapable of telling me why running same graphics in 640x480 is more :monocle: than running it in 1920x1080 which is for 12 years olds?

Why are you telling me this? I'm not the one who faps to shitty CRTs and says it looks crisper on them

After a little more digging, I noticed one minor detail added in the Hi-Res mod that's not graphic-related: They added more colonies for the Zoq-Fot-Pik.

Why? I dunno. Maybe they wanted to be able to add planet names for their Frungy league or something.

    Cd .

in a batch file you'll get nice fullscreen resolution.

    # In terms of story, you might want to try to get your hands on the manual. It tells more about the science team on Vela and who you, the protagonist, are. Commander Hayes at the starbase will fill you in on the rest.

    # Included with the game was a map, 20 years out of date. You should try to find this map and have it nearby. An updated map is also available, but for a first-time player it is full of spoilers, so avoid that.

    # You can zoom in and out on the starmap (not the solar system map) by using the + and - keys.

    # Frungy!

I will obtain these. I'm pretty annoyed that the text isnt displayed fully, taking off about 4 chars or so at the end of each sentence. Tried running the original in dosbox but there I run into the odd problem that no matter what I try I cannot "dock" with a planet. Anyone found a working resolution/upscaling in the hd mod that gives the best text display ?
