And in every traditional rpg you will always wander around, fighting enemies, talking to npcs and buying items.
And in every strategy game you will always manage your ressources and try to overcome your competitors.
And in every adventure game you will click on things in the environment and use/combine things together.
And in every shooter you will shoot at things and trying to avoid getting hit.

Agreed. It also depends on what components are on the new ship. Always best to have 2-3X the cost of a new ship before purchase to buy upgrades right away before moving your crew over.
Or at least buy the new ship and leave it in dry dock until you can upgrade it appropriately.
You can have multiple ships kitted out for different mission and job types too.

completely missing the point, so much as confirming it.
let's say you start with the smallest ship, which is the fastest, most agile, capable of dictating ranges and dodging a lot. let's say you want better technology, an even faster ship, or an even more agile one. there isn't. if you chose that style you started with the best ship already. if you can't see the MONSTRUOUS flaw in this...

and even the minimalist ftl had more different weapons for different strategies.

level up a crewman. tell me where the "x" and "back" button are along the way up to going back to the system map. i'm waiting.

    As for the ship tech...
There are a lot of great modules that you can put onto ships to change their speed, agility, sensors, piloting, navigation, etc.

You will want to be in a friendly faction zone. It should have at least 10 in Economy, Military, and Starport.

Also, by owning at least a Mil rank of 2 with that friendly faction you can gain access to even better ship components.

I understand that the ship upgrade UI is clunky and it is def on their list...
But there are plenty of components that can dramatically change the ways your ship handle and fight.

They are not just going to hand that to every new Chartered Star Trader.

    Good luck out there.

Yeah, there are actually a lot of upgrades to make your ship better.

They also said they are thinking about way to make ship classes more unqiue, for instances certain talents for different classes.

    Yeah? Nothing wrong with that.
Is a space game, you fly around, you deal with bad people, you play a card game, you do quest and grind rep and stuff.
    Always.

I bought it yesterday, it's fun, I was going back to the first quadrant to advance in the main, I defeated a pirate, looted them and then my captain died and I don't know why.

I saw the space screen, pressed spacebar to resume navigation and then the game over screen appeared. I think he was at low health after the combat and we failed a deep space skill test, killing him.

His explanation actually sounds likely, low health crew members can die while flying around in the void when some shit happens.

bought it and id like some clarification:
created spy character. im not interested much in trading. Assuming that I was... how can i check prices on various planets?
spying seem to have little value and high risk. What am I missing? I pay more in maintenance costs then I gain.

about char gen: should i be putting points into sneaking if i get sneak points from spy class? In general it feels like i screwed myself there

Im leaking money on maintenance. Ive gotten worst ship and Ill never upgrade/buy new one at this rate

When you start you are not really good at anything, including spying. Personally, I find it not useful to rely on it from the beginning. I'd do a couple of easy missions first, just escorting people around or bringing McGuffins from A to B. In that way you gain money and experience. You can use the money to upgrade your ship with spying gear and you can level your crew to your playing style. Once you get a couple of talents and have more of the cruical skills, things will get easier.
I'd also suggest you try to find missions that involve spying because they usually seem to have higher pay than simply spying on your own, which you can of course still do on the side. Also, you need to learn to simply leave it be. If you get too many or too harsh risk cards then it might simply not be worth it.

ok i figured what works in early game.

be a total pussy and expose your butthole to any pirate/military officer/zealot for extensive cavity searches who comes for trouble. Most of the time they leave and help you complete the fedex missions for xp and monies.

having self respect and trying to put up a fight is not a good idea at all early game.

    I partially agree:
The game lacks more ship and equipment options. The smaller ships need to be better at dodging, and we need more upgrades for the engine.
Combat is a bit repetitive indeed, and is among the weaker aspects of the game.
But I find the game pretty good at making you deal with consequences (of taking risks to complete your mission or max your profits, mostly), and trading is more interesting than in most other space games without the game ending up feeling like an Excel simulator .

I agree that the trading is cool, but I haven't played other space games. Even if it gets easier once I've learned to check where a cargo is on-demand and decide my route depending on that. Also trying to find a world to sell xeno artifact was fun.

As someone already mentioned it in this thread - the game could use animation speed up option.
I've spent majority of my playing time watching my ship slowly crawling through space, or waiting for the combat turn animations.
