Why are any of you surprised? Nobody here should have even vaguely entertained buying this after the first two.

That's the entire industry summed up in a quote.

Shock horror, but I'll try to give an objective view on the Codex of all places.

Levine is really really good at creating worlds. He even showed that in Bioshock (as the Codex's own review noted, I recall). He's always been good at making worlds, and he doesn't seem to have lost that talent.

The trouble with Bioshock was that the gameplay, the narrative and the world occurred in 3 different concurrent-but-separated games. Sure, you had a cool underground world that made sense, but none of the backtracking of SS2 to get a feel for the station, and nothing in the way of real interaction aside from setpiece 'set oil on fire' gimics (and as far as Levine's world-building talents go, that stuff is pretty much irrelevent to it). Similarly, it played with the 'no backstory protagonist following orders' trope, but without doing anything with it - if the game had suddenly opened up and you had genuine freedom after the conditioning was broken it would have been 10 times the game it was. As it was, it basically just ripped off the same narrative mechanic that was done MUCH better in FEAR.

So I'm expecting yet another good world from Bioshock Infinite. And I'm expecting the same failure to integrate narrative and gameplay that plagued Bioshock, as Bioshock made money so they'll copy the formula. It will be another generic shooter that happens to be set in a cool environment, nothing more, nothing less.

The problem is, by today's standards, Bioshock did NOT make that much money. The definition of a "blockbuster seller" has changed since 2007. And it seems they're well aware of that, and have dumbed down the game accordingly.

Is that from the beginning of the game? Looks extremely linear and cutscene-tastic.

Wait, what's up with this loot system? So...

    1) Even though there are people everywhere, it's okay for the protagonist to just loot every container, including PEOPLE'S PURSES, without any reaction whatsoever?

    2) Why are there like, hot dogs and crap stuffed into boxes and flower pots? The random loot in the first two games I could buy because they might have been splicer stashes etc., but this is literally just dumpster-diving. Did they leave it in for the lulz?

    3) Pistol ammo inside a barrel of fireworks. Because when storing my ammunition, I like to make sure the bullets are right next to the explosives. It's safer that way.

It's more than two hours in. You can click on "Bioshock Infinite" under the videos tab underneath the stream to see it from the start.

It's kinda funny that they kept doing the senseless audio-log thing even though there really isn't a reason for it in this game.

I guess this is just following the game tradition of nonsense stuff in nonsense places that follows the game history. Just like in beat em ups and them chickens hidden in dumpsters. Maybe is some commentary on the consumist society :gameoverthink:. I remember one interview with Ken when he said he wanted to make bathrooms in SS2 proportional to the number of people, but then canned the idea saying "who cares about this stuff".

Was it an intentional design decision to make the PC and the bitch companion about 3.5 feet tall? I can't get over the fact that every time he goes through a door the handle is just below eye level.

EDIT: HAHAOHWOW, just saw a "You should snipe now, take this" moment. The enemy hadn't even appeared yet, the NPC just knew ahead of time that there be fighting ahead.

So is the NPC invincible or are the enemies all trying to make amends for the millenia of abuse at the hands of the Patriarchy that women have suffered by allowing her free passage?

They could have just called her Alyx and not said a word about what to do about her, players would have figured it all out instantly and not even batted an eye.

Pretty much. And that world is worth exploring IMO.

It will be a shame if the gameplay is even more stupid, but oh well.

Considering this game went through development hell, I'm not sure if the world would be as well-realised as BioShock.

Read again, he doesn't mention any savegame limitation. He just says you'll need to reload saves a lot because the game will be hard.
