I may use Tolkienesque place names every now and then, but rest assured, this is all set in a unique world that plays by its own rules.

Elves - The Graceful Ones, awoke ten thousand years ago in the far eastern shores of Middle-Earth, beyond the Greatwood that covers much of those lands. Yet, despite their centuries-long life-span and eternal youth, there is no other race that has been altered quite as much as the Elves, each tribe that went out of their original homeland continued to transform physically, mentally, and in spirit over the millennia, to the point where it can hardly be considered a single race, but rather a family of species with a common ancestor.

High Elves / Eldar, are perhaps the most familiar, as they strongly resemble humans, except for higher stature, pointy ears, and being clad in an aura of grace and light that is apparent to even the most cynical observer. They have many kingdoms and magical cities hidden in Eryn Lasgalen, their vast domain known as the Greatwood to humans. There the Sentinels of Gondolin keep a watchful eye over the only passage to the hallowed and sacred demi-isle of Cuiviénen, the original birthplace of the Elves, rumored to be a timeless and enchanted place upon which no human or non-elven foot has ever stepped. Pilgrimage to the Font of Awakening is highly valued among all tribes of the Elves, and perhaps it is the proximity to this life-giving font of gracious energy that has kept the Eldar relatively unaltered (assuming that their fair form is indeed the closest to the Elves' original design).

Wood Elves / Ents

This tribe has developed such a close affinity with the forest and its trees, that they have themselves become as though made of bark, wood and leaf. They are by far the most long-lived of all the elven tribes, but spend most of their time rooted to the ground, communicating with each other and the forest wildlife through wind and water and the earth. They inhabit much of the Greatwood, and other untamed lands throughout Middle-earth, and are often overlooked by humans who venture as far as to seek their wisdom.

Sea Elves / Mer

This tribe has developed such a longing for the seashore and what lies beneath the tide, that they eventually came to live under the sea, where the seaweed is always greener, ruling over vast submersed kingdoms on the bottom of the ocean. The Mer have different castes depending on the depth of their home kingdom, ranging from scaly humanoids that can live both on the surface and in the water to full-blown mermaids and mermen with fishtails, fins, and no air-breathing ability. The siren's songs can be heard with the passing of the tide, luring young men and women to their ultimate demise - or a pleasure-filled visit to the underwater domain.

High elves always carry a projector with them with which they can back illuminate themselves. Only a cynical would deny the high quality of their electronics and optics.
