My name is Bruce and for the past few months I've been working on a game that brings Final Fantasy-esque gameplay to the world of superheroes and super villains. The game is called The Amazing Fantastics and is being developed for PC.

The Amazing Fantastics is a turn-based saga that puts the player in the shoes of a hero who must assemble a team of super-powered allies to protect one of the most dangerous cities in the country. This city, Utopia, is the poster child of crime and corruption and in defending this town its heroes come face-to-face with criminal organizations, fiendish mutants, and even otherworldly deities.

    Art Direction

The Amazing Fantastics will combine comic book-style cutscenes with 2D graphics in-game.

    Gameplay

Featuring over 20 playable heroes, turn-based combat, vast selections of equipment, skill trees, and other RPG staples, The Amazing Fantastics gives players the freedom to play the game how they want.

    Trailer

    Features

    • Strategy-heavy and highly flexible combat — will you lead a team full of threatening brutes, a posse of elemental powerhouses, a squad of tech-savvy brainiacs, or will you build a league that utilizes all types of heroes?
    • There are no magic points or mana points — special techniques cost HP to use! This means that the player must think of creative strategies to defeat the enemy while simultaneously preserving his or her own party
    • Over twenty playable superheroes, each with their own unique powers and personalities
    • Diverse and immersive dungeons that greatly reward those adventurous enough to explore them multiple times
    • A world that makes you feel like you're inside of a comic book

Welcome to the Codex, Bruce. Your game looks great and I hope you do well.

Just a word of warning: the General RPG Discussion section is full of elitists, Japan-haters, racists, anti-semitists, misogynists, homophobes and otherwise offensive and vile morons who don't realize that it's 2016. I recommend the General Discussion and Politics sub boards for a more pleasant experience.

The topic title is disappointing because I thought that FF was literally crossing over with DC and Marvel and I wanted to see the clusterfuck.

    Thanks!

What are the most vile threads on this forum? Might as well get to know the new neighbors since I'm here.

I agree, it is pretty disappointing.

    Needs more 90's comics edginess.

Edit:This project looks more like they approached "comics" in the broadest way possible. Rather than paying tribute to a particular artist or style (like Darkest Dungeon Casino did with Mignola), it's about dudes with superpowers fighting against baddies who also have superpowers - that's what comic books are all about right?

    Excellent questions.

The direction I'm leaning towards most resembles a cross between the Silver Age and Modern Age. I want The Amazing Fantastics to be lighthearted overall but still have very serious and somber moments. Think of The Incredibles. This movie captures some of the charm and tropes of older comics to the point of parody while also having moments where the story is very dark. That's what I'm going for here. I'm not trying to make a Mario game but I don't want to make a gritty and realistic melodrama either (even though the first trailer is a little melodramatic).

More so than comic books I'm getting inspiration from comic universes. I only recent got into superhero comics (a couple of years ago) but I've always been a fan of superhero cartoons, live action TV shows, movies, and video games. I suppose I misspoke when I said that I'm making a game that makes you feel like you're inside of a comic book because I really want you to feel like you're inside of a comic universe with interconnected stories and characters, and I think that’s the essence of why a comic book fan should be interested in this game. The plan isn't to make a one-shot experience but to build a fleshed out universe around this title and its characters. Since I'm only one person I can also create stories that are cohesive and consistent quality-wise without the continuity errors and convoluted plots that are commonly found in comics, and the best part is that it’ll all be interactive.

This game looks great but the 20 playable characters has me a little leery - can I create my own lead character? I would much more prefer to create my whole party, but I'll be happy if I am at least able to create at least the main protagonist.

    Thanks!

I've thought about making the lead character customizable and it's something that I would love to add to the game. However, I don't know how to implement character creation. I have an idea of how I might go about doing it but it could end up a disaster, and either way an enormous amount of sprite work would be needed to cover the protagonist's dungeon and battle animations. I'll look into it some more but I don't want to commit because I'm not sure I can deliver.

If I were to implement character creation it wouldn't extend to your whole party though. The heroes in The Amazing Fantastics are a huge part of the game's story, and when they are hollowed out and replaced by player-made creations it becomes difficult for such a character-reliant story to be told effectively. I'll also have to scrap the comic book cutscenes if the player gets to decide what each hero looks like.

Somehow I doubt the artist is skilled enough to emulate any notable comic style

except maybe the poser tracing style you see every now and then

Thanks for the information and I hope it pans out. I figure full party creation was completely out of the question like in the Freedom Forces, but I think it is always 100% worth it to have a character generation instead of pre generated characters. I know when I see games that look like this I assume they are jrpgs and are of no interest to me, but with character generation you can label or tag it or whetever it is a called as a crpg and list chargen in the bullets and draw in people that would have skipped it outherwise.

If you go with character creation you can go with broad strokes. Like the classical origins tech/mutation/no powers/etc and a few archtypes of each, some of them interchangeable. Like tech/mutations origins could have super speed archtype.
You dont need to make every power ever, just needs to be big enough to make you feel the character is your own. A doable goal would be 5 archtypes in total, 3 of them exclusive and 2 of them interchangeable or something like that.

How are encounters handled? Enemies visible on the map or random encounters?

Theres something about that combat, maybe the way they are just standing, or the fact that you have no UI with feedback, i really dislike it.

Enemies are visible on the map. You can see this in action in the second-to-last GIF I posted. I think exploring dungeons becomes a lot more fun when enemy encounters can be avoided or at least anticipated.

I get the part about not liking the characters' poses but what do you mean when you say that there is no UI with feedback?

In the middle of the attacks the UI disappears, without it it looks worse, id advice a UI thats more pleasing to the eye and less RPG makerish that stays during the attack sequences. To give you something to look at once youve seen the animation play enough times (which is more than 5). Have you thought having some attacks with interactive components btw?
