It's all too sad that I can see some Writing 101 dropout actually say that.

I enjoy the "good guy" that has moral grey areas to deal with and is a bit rough on the edges kind of character.

    AKA: Batman, I suppose.

Gaming needs more 'Man With No Name' type heroes. Instead of going into stupid monologues about feelings and shit they should just show the character squinting at anything that should make them feel something.

Totally this. The whole "fleshing out the character" business is unnecessary and completely out of place in most games. Especially if it's an action game and we want a "bad-boy" type character, a silent killer is much more "badass" than some whiny, shouting drama queen.

Yeah. but he needs the Paladin Archeotype to contrast with and show how both characters shine in different ways. One is incomplete without the other's existance.

Thus, in philosophical opposition to Batman, Superman.

Fuck Batman for being "I am a rich fuck and a superhuman athlete who has a grimdark story." But then different types of fiction require different character archetypes, and again it all comes down to what interests and expectations one holds. I can sorta understand people who dig this "DARK AND EDGY" hero type even if I don't share their views. You can't even call them the lowest denominator because in the end, what's the difference between this and a "lawful good paladin"? Both are cardboard cutouts some people enjoy, and that's what they expect of from their video games. And don't get me started on people who like to make the character a cooler version of themselves.

Personally, I love when they drag an average guy out of his normal life and then put him through so much shit he's a human wreck by the ending even if he"won". Fuck. Can't even recall any game which was like that. It's always a superhero or an edgy excuse for a character.

additional information: I might be intoxicated

Is that why coming of age movies exist? No. Is that why you can't walk for tripping over them? Largely, yes.

It's also why today you can't anymore have a squinty-eyed man-with-no-name western, and instead your modern western is two cowpokes riding up a mountain to learn about each other. Fundamentally.

Anti-heroes or 'darker' characters are great. They feel more real somehow.

Bland, edgy, emo-haired chars are faggoty though.

Penumbra does this very well. Black Plague has a truly powerful ending segment that fits this bill perfectly.

Also The Darkness II, and at least tonally, Batman: Arkham City

And Penumbra gets precisely zero credit for having perhaps the most realistic, relatable plot and characters of any horror game in history.

Amnesia, while still good, is a noticeable step back in terms of writing quality. Guess which one the average gamer adores.

I'd say Black Plague was a step back in terms of its supporting cast, but Philip was still great, and Clarence definitely provided some interesting perspective.

I think Amnesia's cast wasn't particularly great, but a lot of the logs and world building were still pretty fantastic. It was definitely clear that Tom Jubert had left, though.

Holy shit....that dialogue is fucking terrible. Words cannot describe just how atrocious that writer is. It's not even good in a cheesy RE 1 sort of way...it's just terrible.

I can't believe people are genuinely missing the lawful good paladin protagonists. They were excruciatingly boring 20 years ago, and sure as hell did not got any better.

Oh wait, it's HHR. I rest my case.
