Dungeon crawl stone soup is fairly easy to start. It even has it's own tutorial.

what's the best roguelike to jump int for someone like me who's never played one? (graphics are not an issue)
I would say Brogue- it's got a very simplified set of systems and a pretty transparent UI, no endless hidden stats to throw you off track. It's also got most of the major core features of the genre, aside from actually levelling up by killing shit.

I started with Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. It's difficult, sure, but no point playing an "easy" roguelike (besides, Crawl is arguably not that hard if you're not trying to challenge yourself on purpose). It's simple and the game generally introduces everything pretty gradually and it's very anti-spoiler: it tells you weaknesses and resistances of enemies and even the spells they can cast so you don't need to check the wiki for every piece of information. It's pretty fair in its mechanics (not with random instakills and encounters though)

thanks for the suggestions guys. i think i'm gonna give DCSS a whirl, since if i understood your post correctly DR's in Brogue you don't level up by killing? nothing against that but i want something more traditional at the moment.

Fair enough. Was also going to suggest DoomRL; it has multiple difficulties, so it's good for learning the basic roguelike skills of resource management, positioning, and scouting. It's also fairly non-traditional in several ways though, being Doom themed.

Crawl's not a terrible place to start either, though it's got some very fucked up mechanics you'll never understand without spoilers, like the way armour works or the spellpower formula. Weapons are also fairly unintuitive in the way they work.

btw i already died in the tut because i felt like entering some steam-waters that the tut told me to avoid.

Good luck understanding the spellpower formula even with the wiki opened.

Crawl is simple enough on the superficial side. More armor = better, more spellpower = better, more intelligence + magic skills -> more spellpower. Sure, there might be a lot of fucked up things going on behind the scenes, but Crawl does its best to let players play the game without massive amounts of spoiler knowledge required.

Yeah, it just bugs the hell out of me being in a situation (suppose a shop where I can buy either a +6 int ring or wizardry ring) and not having any idea which will be the right call- even after making the choice.

For an easy class, play a Troll Berserker of Trog. You can eat most corpses and you have troll regen. I wouldn't recommend starting with a caster in DCSS due to the ANNOYING spell hunger mechanic.

Best game to play IMHO would be PosChengband: easy to get into and food is common as all hell so you can do what you like without worrying about starvation all the time as you would in DCSS.

You do not need to worry about starvation that much in DCSS. The only time I died of it was recently due to the Hunger Ghost that was recently buffed and that makes you hungry on hit pretty quickly. Other than that, butcher all corpses with c->a and you will be ok. Barring some fringe case of Spriggan going overboard with casting magic or a very unlucky visit in a corpseless branch. But you will have a stock of permafood for one or two of those anyway.

Doom RL - you dont need any meta knowledge, it is winable by newbs within 1h interval. Also no hunger clock. Try playing scout class: it got stair sense skill also take 2 levels of intuition trait - now you will "feel" stairs, enemies, powerups at certain distances.

I wouldn't recommend starting with a caster in DCSS due to the ANNOYING spell hunger mechanic.
But on the contrary, spellcasters are way more fun to play. Hell, I could even use Sif Muna's channeling whenever necessary and I still had way more food than necessary. And then once you can cast Necromutation the game just becomes a fun spamfest.

They're fun to play...at higher levels. At low levels you get two chances to fire off a spell and then try to run away as you can't fight worth a damn. Also, Necromutation requires you to either be a Kiku worshipper for a guarantee to get the Necronomicon or you get lucky with Sif's gifts.

Yeah, I would not recommend spellcasters for beginners. They are really squishy and need at least decent knowledge of both the monsters and what to expect in specific dungeon branches.
Beginners would get a better start with Troll Berserkers, or Minotaur Figters, or Gargoyle Fighters (slightly more difficult due to the lower hp, but can stack shitload of Armour and has a lot of usefull intrinsics).
Also, If you go fighter, one handed plus shield is significantly more tanky than 2h. Maces are nice since they get the defense brand often and they dont cut hydras heads (A trap that a new player can very easily fall into with edged weapons. I know I did in my first time playing DCSS years ago).

"get lucky" with Sif's gifts?
I've done Spellcaster playthroughs in Crawl multiple times, and I've always managed to get Necromutation either from randomly finding the necronomicon lying around in the dungeon (disturbingly common in my games) or you just eventually get every spell from Sif. I'd rather say you'd need to get quite unlucky never to get it.

Is it just me or is the latest version of TOME extremely dark? Shaders make everything worse. How do you change it?

Tales of Maj Eyal isn't too hard to get into, it's focused more on character levels and abilities cooldowns. Some people would recommend ADOM, but that game has far too many minutiae in my opinion.

Anyone got a good mod list for TOME? I have my own set that I have been using for a while but I'd like to see what everyone else has.

I only tested first with the new Tome version.
>quick drown NPC's
Why?
It's for the loot the rare NPCs carry.

Saves your time and nerves on insane, madness difficulty. On high difficulty game is rather unfair. By drowning non hostile unique npc's in towns you will get money, items, xp and chance to survive first unique enemies you will meet in the dungeon.
