RPS did a Gamescom-based preview of The Dark Eye: Demonicon.

You play as a bald, angry, heavily armoured guy known as Cairon. He’s primarily a fighter, not a lover, but he/you have about 20 skills to play with, including non-combat stuff such as lockpicking, crafting and persuasion (or ‘fast-talking’, as the dev rather endearingly put it). You’ll be making choices in dialogue, which will in turn have capital-C Consequences. For instance:

At one point, you find out that a necromancer has taken over a village and forced its peasants into slavery, making them work in a toxic mine to look for an artifact. If they die he resurrects them as undead slaves. What a rotter! You should probably stab him in the eye or something.

But wait! Turns out that the artifact he’s after isn’t actually for his own nefarious ends – it’s necessary to cure to a disease that’s infected a major city, whose death toll is rising fast. So would you rather free the peasants and kill the necromancer, or would you prefer to help save, potentially, thousands of lives in the city at the cost of a few lives and the unpleasant knowledge that people are being zombified as a result of your inaction?

Tough one, eh? Philanthropic necromancy wasn’t a concept I’d considered before. The Witcher 2 definitely seems to be a guiding light for this game, which is no bad thing. The zombie’n'demon setting means it’ll be tonally a whole lot darker/gothier, however.

...

Anyway! A lot of Demonicon’s features were merely described, not shown. All the devs had to show off so far was the combat system, but we’ll get to see all that good ol’ world stuff at a later date. Here’s a reasonably similar demo to the one I saw, albeit uninterrupted by me asking “what’s all that then?” and “who’s the bald guy?” and “can I choose to be lovely or a prick?”

Considering for how long this game is in development already that's not much.

I thought this changed developers at one point, who made the game from scratch.

sorta. drakensang and demonicon are both based on the dark eye, which is a german pnp game. drakensang tried using both the setting and ruleset but it seems like demonicon will only go with the setting.

As Colonel Kurtz once put it: the decline... the decline

The Game System is pretty decent and I urge everyone who is into the oldschool RPGs to check out at least part 3 of the Realms of Arkania Series 'Shadow over Riva' (part 3 because it has the most advanced graphics of the series and is probably also the easiest in a series of kinda hard games. If you like part 3 and want more go for part 1 and then 2). You can get the series for cheap over at GOG.

'Drakensang: The Dark Eye' and 'Drakensang: The River of Time' are both OK games for modern standards but don't even play in the same league as the old series.

Looks like it'd be more fun on a console.

no. dsa is and was shit as both setting and system throughout pretty much all editions and the only purpose it ever had was serving as an entry point to the elysian fields of better pnp games. dsa players are the german pnp equivalent of biowaretards.

I don't want to get into a Codex Insult Throw Showdown™ with you over this but I beg to differ.
The setting as well as the rules are quite fleshed out and can be applied as in-depth or as shallow as the DM wants to.
Because of this flexibility and it's ability to maintain the most important feature of any RPG system: helping instead of hindering the actual Roleplaying, it was my system of choice.

This is only C&C if that major city is actually present in game and the resolution of the quest makes an impact on quests/npcs/appearance/etc. If it's just mentioned in conversation then it's only the illusion of C&C. Article is unclear on whether or not the one major city in game is the one involved in that quest. However, the way it's described the 'consequences' shown in the city are about as deep as the town herald in Gothic 2 talking about the events.

This takes place in the same setting as the Realms of Arkania games, right? How is it that the aesthetic has transformed from that goofy Teutonic, almost-Conan feel to Italian Renaissance in Drakensang to gothic sci-fi with this? Has the series continually reinvented itself or is there really just that much freedom with the setting?

Also, apparently there was supposed to be another Dark Eye game called Armalion that eventually turned into Sacred. I don't really know much about it, but those are the best pre-rendered graphics I've ever seen.

That's not Devil May Cry. That makes Dungeon Siege 3 look like a masterpiece. Urgh. Fuck you Alec Meer.

Realms of Arkania -> Thorwal/Riva (northern parts of Aventuria)

Drakensang -> Middenrealm (basically, 16th century Germany)

Demonicon -> Black Lands, conquered by Borbarad (gothic, grim dark)

So yes, Demonicon was cancelled. What they're doing now is as much Demonicon (or DSA for that matter) as FO3 is FO1.
Please stop covering this console whackamole, VoD.

Eh, I have no problem with casual ARPGs so long as they don't pretend to be something they aren't. If we only had pure RPG newsposts then there would only be one every other month.

Looks like a Divine Divinity 2 ARPG
It will be average, yet receive 7.0/1.0 reviews upon release. It has potential. Demonicon feels fairly inspired, and they can count on at least one customer(me).
Using a specific role for the protagonist will present them some interesting opportunities for storytelling, whereas the other Dark Eye games had adventuring parties. Let's hope they follow up on those opportunities.

Wow nice gray morality in there. Never see that coming. Totally. But it still pales in comparison to Dragon Age 2's conflict between mage and templars.

And do we get to see this big city suffering if we slay the necromancer? So much questions to be asked. At least I get to see Kirkwall in flames if I side with the mages. Or templars even.
