I would've liked HR's art style if they hadn't overdone it with the yellow. I think they must've had a lot of leftover yellow that they didn't use in the first Deus Ex, and they needed to find something to do with it.

Well they had no choice really because that engine was so ugly and clunky they needed to cover it up with some shiny "art direction".

The piss filter was intentionally ugly because they were trying to depict an ugly world.

Still, it should have been less intense in doors and especially in nice buildings with ac units. That would have driven home the class warfare aspect of the setting better, but they shied away from a lot of that anyways compared to the first game.

HD packs are not part of the game and shouldn't be discussed as such. Though I doubt even HD packs can make most of DX locations look good as all they can do is exchanging textures and meshes and DX1 levels, while ambitious in terms of layout, functionality and themes are pretty damn basic in terms of geometry and lighting. You'd need a complete level-by level overhaul to fix that.

Gold-look, also referred to as piss-filter, is only a single element of DX:HR visual style and by far the least important one.

I don't think anyone is arguing the opposite when it comes to game as a whole.

    You know what? I agree.

    Well, yellow is blue's complement.

I must be one of those rare persons who enjoyed HR's graphics and art. They did the job and immersed me in the world, also they ran very smooth. If only every first person rpg could claim the same.

I'm sort of with you on this. The overall art-style worked for me, however the game often did feel clunky.

I enjoyed them as well. They really reminded me of sharp, somewhat stylized looks of System Shock 2.

Depends on whether you are using painterly RYB colour model or more complete RGB/CMY.

Since RGB is based on how light is actually received by eye's cones, I'd argue for yellow.

There's a mod to remove the piss filter if it bothers you.

Which is clearly proven by such games as Bloodlines and Arcanum.

I would say it depends on what exactly needs to be fixed, if it's balance issues, bugs or cut content then sure mods will fix it and can potentially make it great. Something like HR though. Well I mean even if you ignore certain aspects of the retarded gameplay, the world itself is just ugly and poorly implemented. I'm not even talking about the color scheme used, but simple things like the fact that everything in the game lacks depth perception, the clothing is all made of blocks that can't move, the constantly recycled enemies, the details in the environment being completely static and lets not forget all the clipping problems.

HR is definitely playable, the story is pretty entertaining, the voice acting is well done, the roleplaying elements are fairly solid even if they are linear but HR is not a pretty game. Personally I had more fun with Invisible War.

You are such an emotional man Draq. I never said game sucks, in fact as I mentioned there are plenty of highpoints to it. But lets see

If you are going to tell me the clothes here look fine and dandy, you probably have eyesight problems. It doesn't have to be fully animated fabric for them to apply proper shading with at least some common sense. Or at least do so with the char's in the game that you see repeatedly in close detail, especially things like the PC trench coat.

Depth perception is messed up, not so much with the static backgrounds but with the interactive objects of the game world. Everybody looks like they are made of plastic. I don't even know where to begin with that body on the right. Also wtf is happening to AJ's left arm?

I'm not sure if you are serious about bringing DX 1 into this or just trolling? DX 1 was made 12 years ago.... no shit the graphics are worse, you don't say .
The difference being that the resources used for both games is non comparable, HR could have had far more varied NPC's, but laziness is laziness.

Sarif is low-poly by design. It's probably armored.

    Other outfits are... less blocky.
But yes, costumes, and, especially, faces, have somewhat mannequenish look. Probably intentional.

Dreaad, I don't think you know what depth perception means. Unless you're saying the game cannot perceive depth, in which case, the game is a game, it can't perceive anything much less depth.

I meant, Sarif's vest is armored and therefore low-poly. Not sure about Sarif himself.

I don't know man, to me "intentional" graphics that are sub par just sounds like bad programming. Unless it's completely obvious i.e. a 2d rpg. The thing here is that they go all out on things like smoke and force waves through the air, but the character models look terrible. Maybe I'm just seeing things but I don't understand how anything in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gB0x3PUF3tU can be considered good graphics.

Triangles were an artistic choice. Especially Sarif's vest. You can see the same triangle design on ordinary park benches. You have correctly identified that the game world does not conform exactly to the fashion trends of present day.

It is almost as if they were trying to convey that the game takes place in the near future or something...
