A turn based squad tactics game set in the wild west. Based on the character descriptions one can judge after the American Civil War.

Set to feature multiple game modes: Story, Endless and some kind of an empire building mode.
Characters from a set roster are made available through playing the story mode. Story seems to be centered around two families.
Endless might be something comperable to a singleplayer skirmish mode.

Items improve the stats of characters and the characters also develop at the very least special abilities and talents.

Combat takes inspiration from tabletop games in addition to other turn based tactics games. Duels or shootouts appear to have some special flare to them and there could be some cinematic moments involved.

Yes. We're still here and working hard. Still can't say a date. However, we will be engaging a full QA team soon so that will help determine the "finish line" for us

fake edit.
Might as well post some of their development updates.

We wanted to give an update on how things are going. We’re still grinding through bugs most the time, but there are few major surprises.

Early on, we really wanted to do a character create, so you could customize Hired Guns. It got placed aside as, at the time, it was out of scope. As we’ve progressed and cleaned up the game we’ve also looked to improve it and sometimes that involves adding frequently requested features.

As we were reviewing the hired guns and touching up some issues with them we took a look at really how much work it was to allow you to configure them...and as a result, you can now visually configure your Hired Guns. We’re glad that we were able to get some customization in. It required a couple changes to the system and a very little bit of new art.

Along with the hired gun customizer we’ve also touched up the levels giving them a round of visual polish and putting in more cover where needed in a few.

As many have noted here, we’re a tiny team. It’s a matter of us QAing it all on our own and tweaking that takes time. We’re done with adding new levels or major characters or anything like that. It’s always frustrating when you want something to release and it’s no less frustrating from our end. I hope when we do put it out, everyone finds it worth the wait and most importantly has fun.

Towns, Territories, Larger World Maps and More
25 OCTOBER, 2017 - DARKMATTER
Hey Everyone,

It’s has been ages since a proper update. To get the bad news out of the way. Since everyone has been asking, we’ll be pushing into 2018. That said, onward to the good parts.

We’ve been very busy adding features to and polishing Western Saga mode. There is a new territory system where you’ll get a little extra help from the locals if you’re fighting on your home turf or face a little extra opposition from the enemy if you are on theirs. There are other benefits and penalties for being in friendly and enemy territory.

One of the other massive changes was increasing the world map around 5x. It’s a much bigger space to explore and you can find yourself in trouble far from home which makes decisions about what kinds of actions to take a little more important. Along with this came the ability for Hired Guns to travel out to your groups so you can receive re-enforcements in the wild.

Another huge addition was the town system. Towns now have specific benefits you can use which are randomly generated for each game. You may find a valuable town that has Crooked Judges, a Brothel, a Saloon filled with rumors or a Shop ready to sell you valuable items. This comes hand in hand with town names showing up on the map for added flavor and clarity.

As mentioned before briefly we added quirks, perks and names for all the Mines, Mills and Hog Farms that generate resources. It makes the world feel more alive and strategies for which resources give the most benefits change the way you think about what is important.

One of the other most effective new features is being able to tell where enemy groups are headed if they are in visual range. It allows you to make better decisions and ups the desirability for visual range research or different horses.

As we’ve said before Feud is a big game with a small team. We are officially on the final stretch, but the last 5%-10% of a game is always the hardest. Thanks for your patience and interest.

Feud has been a labor of love for everyone on the team. We’ve treated it differently than any game we’ve ever done. While we’ve taken feedback and comments with enthusiasm, we’ve been free from other “overlords” for the first time and it has allowed us to make something amazing that we are excited to share. We have some other good, big announcements concerning Feud that will happen within the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

Deep in the Mines!
5 OCTOBER - DARKMATTER
Hey everyone. We wanted to give an update on status for the game. We’re all still working hard. The game is officially in the QA phase now. That said we have a couple final features to share in the next couple weeks that made it in.

Some of the things we’ve been dealing with are edge cases on abilities. Basically, what happens in very specific circumstances when you combine abilities or use them in unexpected ways. An example would be: “Let’s say someone is stabbing someone to death and you want to casually roll up and give them some medical attention…” how does the game deal with that? IOther items include adding a lot of sound effects to round out the baseline set of stuff and some effects touch ups to help some of the abilities not only more exciting but clear. This goes together with all the normal balance issues and other bugs. Feud turned out to be a large game.

As you might expect we won’t be out in 2018. Red Dead Redemption 2 is right around the corner and while we are a very different sort of western, we didn’t want to ship into their window or the vast number of other titles being released around Christmas. Our hope is, providing testing goes well, an early 2019 release.

As a final note this week. We’ll be actively updating everyone here more often and beginning to be present on other media areas like Facebook and Twitter. Being an extremely small team means sometimes…let’s not kid ourselves and just say most times, we end up focusing on the game over the external areas. Everyone is dedicated to giving Feud’s current fans and future ones a good time and something worth waiting for. In the weeks ahead we’ll be sharing more screens, videos, behind the scenes excerpts and plans for Feud post launch. Yes, there are actually some exciting plans for what happens after the game is out.

Until next week.

Get Some Cover
12 OCTOBER - DARKMATTER
Hey everyone,

Previous posts have gone over updates on how things are going and new features. This week we’re going to do something a little different and talk about the cover system in Feud and get into the guts of how it works.

In Feud there are five different situations you can be in for cover. The first is completely exposed with no cover. The other four are 25% Cover (think of it as light cover), 50% Cover (standard good cover), 75% Better than Average Cover (more sturdy objects, solid rock areas) 100% Extremely Good Cover (dense rock formations etc.) We use a “badge” to indicate cover, how full the badge is represents how good the cover is.

Cover benefits include making you harder to hit and giving you a better chance to take less damage when hit. Basically, they boost your dodge and toughness checks.

c04a2d2b044041648779059d1adf379160ebaa84.jpg

You can see in the shot some of your characters are in 50% and 75% cover while Bad Frank Phillips has made the bold move of standing on a rock. He’s in the open but gets some benefits from being up there. The red, shattered badge let you know not only does he have no cover, but he is exposed and in range of enemy attacks. You might wonder what the silver badges are, they are a challenging type of enemy that is invulnerable when in cover. You to maneuver to expose them to stand a chance!

A big part of the gunfights in Feud is finding and moving to the best cover you can strategically. There are times where a 50% cover position is better than a 100% cover one. There are levels where you’ll be constantly moving and being faced with choices on where and how to set up your posse as they move into a potentially dangerous situation. Add on top of this that some cover can be destroyed by loose gunfire and, of course, dynamite which is prone to bouncing around a little before exploding and you’ll find choosing the right cover an important and essential part of making it out of combat with a hole through your hat instead of through your heart.

Keep your powder dry and guns loaded until next week!

You are the Destroyer!
19 OCTOBER - DARKMATTER
Who doesn’t like destruction? Many of the manmade and natural objects in Feud can be destroyed by a variety of means. Simple gunfire can wear down and take out small to mid-sized objects like barrels but if you want to create some real chaos you’ll want to get your hands on some dynamite.

Dynamite is capable of destroying trees, parts of buildings, wagons and most small objects. Some story missions present you with opportunities to get it while you can research some perks in Saga mode to occasionally being fights with dynamite. Dynamite is tricky and can often bounce around a bit so throwing at someone or something right next to you can provide you with a nail-biting moment or could save the day.

Getting hit by the blast from a stick can outright kill a person. If it doesn’t kill them it’ll at least knock them down and perhaps even render them unconscious allowing you to follow up when they are vulnerable.

Some characters, like Randall McCoy, have optional abilities that are specifically tuned to destroy objects and can open up new strategies if cleverly used.

8fc44261479222d0c5309555b6606170b8013f07.jpg

In the shot included you can see a shootout between your posse and some men holed up in a general store. While you can pick away at each other…you could also sneak around to the side, retrieve some dynamite and make your own entrance!

Think before you throw, but don’t think too long, the fuse is burning!

Until next time,

Ghouls and Ghosts….or Not
31 OCTOBER - DARKMATTER
First off.

Happy Halloween from the Feud team.

Today’s update is about all the things that bump in the night and the lack of them in Feud. When we sat down to make Feud we threw around a lot of ideas on how far to take certain aspects of the game. Of course, how much supernatural stuff to include and if we did what kind was one of the larger items.

After going back and forth we went with focusing on the real world as much as possible. Character’s may have special attacks, but a vast majority are grounded with a couple of exceptions.

At the end of the day we opted for a very minimalist approach on the supernatural. We have one event where you can get “cursed” on the world map in saga and Preacher has some divinely inspired abilities and that’s about it.

When Feud comes out it’s set in reality and our plans for a lot of the content going forward match that desire and focus. Included is a shot of a gunfight in a swamp, which is a bit spooky along with Preacher using his condemn abiliy.

It’s a Big World Out There
10 November - DarkMatter
One of the choices that was made in the beginning was to set Feud in and around the Appalachian mountains due to the focus on the Hatfields and McCoys. The great thing about that is it opened up the game and allowed for a lot of different types of levels from snowy mountains to dank swamps.

As much as we loved the variation from the classic western, we didn’t want to leave the desert out. In the middle of the project we opted to add a special storyline that takes some of our characters way out of their own territory and into the dusty desert. In this way we got to add that classic feel into the game without taking away from representing the actual feud locales.

In the future, post launch, we’re excited about jumping into more classic venues as the Feud spreads out to encompass all of the themes people love in western history and films.

May your own travels go well,

The Feud Team

I agree. It seems to actually have improved a little bit since the steam page initially opened, but the aesthetics need some work.

Building a Better Six Gun
19 NOVEMBER - DARKMATTER
Research is one of the big aspects unique to Western Saga mode. There are four different categories with multiple trees in each. The categories are Posse, Weapons, Production and Strategy. With dozens of different choices, it’s up to you to determine what you think is the best path to victory.

Some of the things you can dramatically affect are hired guns, weapons, resources and map visibility. You can research a line of weapons like Long Rifles or Pistols to add extra benefits to having those weapons. If you want to specialize in tougher hired guns that panic less and don’t die as often you can invest in posse improvements.

One of the most interesting categories is Strategy which allows you to unlock map abilities. This includes things like protection for resources and being able to delay or distract enemy posses. However, one of the most exciting is enabling bank robberies which lets you to deploy a rough and tumble group of hired guns to attempt to rob some resources from your enemy which is played out on the strategic map.

f9be968b4be0b4c294ac537e42174c6db16691e4.jpg

Overall, we wanted lots of choices and a variety of different things for you to try each time you play Western Saga. In one game you could go with full resource production while in another focus on strengthening your posse or find a split of research between the categories that gives you a unique advantage.

We’ll explore more of the aspects of Feud in future updates. This week we’re researching how to get the most out of a thanksgiving turkey.

Characters and Themes
4 DECEMBER - DARKMATTER
Feud has a wonderful host of characters. Some are historically based like Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy. Others, like Rita Sanchez and Preacher Thomas are the products of our imagination inspired by western history and films.

With each character or group of characters we create we consider who they may and may not appeal to from an archetype standpoint. With someone like Jim Vance he allowed us to have a representative of a rugged mountain man in game. Jim’s abilities include brutal attacks and traps bringing the mountain man part of him out. He’s also generally tougher and an be customized with items and leveling to be one of the toughest characters to take down. Rita, on the other hand is an agile knife fighter, another type of character that isn’t uncommon in western films. Her goal is to close in and do as much damage as possible and her move set is both artful and deadly.

2714efbd2fc2bb718a27459cd15fb7055c0eb891.jpg

One of the great things about the western setting is it s filled with so many great characters out of history and myth. We already have a long list of characters and historical figures we’re eager to explore post launch, but we’re certain our community has some ideas as well. Feel free to comment here or on the forums if there are character types you’d like to see in the future.

Keep your powder dry until next time,

Perks and Quirks
12 December - DarkMatter
When we set to making hired guns that you could pair up with your “hero” characters we decided we wanted them to have more gameplay flavor than which weapon they used and their visual look. The system we came up with is Perks and Quirks.

Each hired gun has a potential for Perks (good thing like a special ability or stat bonus) and Quirks (bad things like being a drunkard or having, being overconfident or having a bad knee). These elements help define how a hired gun plays and add some character during fights. A drunkard may whip out a bottle and decided he’d rather pound down a little whisky instead of taking an action while a quick draw specialist may have some surprises for anyone who takes a shot at him.

The rarity of hired guns affects how many quirks they have. Low rarity means you’ll be dealing with potentially more than one Quirk while a legendary hired gun may have some amazing ability Perks and few Quirks. Like many of the systems in Feud, hired guns are assigned these benefits and shortcomings randomly so in Saga mode you should always keep your eye out for surprisingly good or bad recruits.

46261f214f0373aac56cca7b93f4233426d74cac.jpg

In play modes like Skirmish you can make life rough on yourself by trying out an oddball team of randomly created hired guns to see if you can take them through a fight with as few casualties as possible. It can be fun working within a handicapped posses’ limitation and pulling off a victory.

Choose your posse wisely!

Until next time,

The Feud Team

Post Dreamhack Update
We are back from Dreamhack! It was a great show we got to talk to dozens of people and introduce them to Feud. For the first time ever, we brought the entire game: Saga, Story and Skirmish modes and allowed people to jump right in wherever they wanted to. They could gallop around in a posse in Saga or get down and dirty with guns and knives in battle. We kept a game of Saga running for three days that got deeper and deeper in as random people stopped by to play. Overall it was exhausting, fun and worth it.

We saw the posts regarding the stream. Sadly, we had no details on it either until the day of the show, to make matters worse it appears that the Friday stream isn’t loading at all.

So….

I guess we’ll just have to do some streams and videos for you. In the coming weeks we’ll be getting things set up to show some scenario playthroughs and parts of saga to give everyone a good feeling for what the game is. Until then we’ll be back and active on Steam, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posting shots and updates.

Attack of Opportunity
Along with many of the AI changes and additional abilities we also had a close look at Knife/Melee enemies and decided a change was needed to make them feel more effective. There were several ideas tossed around but we settled on giving them an Attack of Opportunity.

This new state allows a melee enemy to make a free automatic attack on anyone that attempts to move away from them. While it’s a somewhat common thing amongst tabletop miniature games it was something that hadn’t graced Feud yet. Due to the fact you can intentionally spend your action points any way you like it was just far too easy to move and then shoot a melee attacker. You could even double move to a spot far away to lure a melee attacker into an ambush. Now when you attempt to use those types of strategies they come with a painful price.

Speaking of “painful prices” we know many, including ourselves are dealing with a number of changes and challenges to life due to the virus making its way around the world. Everyone is a participant in a “strategy challenge” with no reloads and very real consequences. Our hearts go out to everyone who is having to deal with the situation. If we all can remain calm and remember we’re all part of the human posse, we’ll undoubtedly come out the other side stronger, smarter and healthy.

We’ll be back next week with more info. Until then be vigilant and kind.
