You cannot sign up for the open beta? They only allow those who pre-purchased the game?

    Open beta my ass :x

Technically they were free closed beta signups. they might do an open-open beta stress test a week or two before the game goes live though. Would make sense, since that way they could spread out the downloads of the game client over a longer period and reduce the stress on ther servers come release day.

Regarding that, I can ask a guildie that owns our raidgroup's 30-slot vent about temporary (until further notice) beta usage. I wonder what he'd think about rampaging Codexers on it though.

Probably not a good idea until we're settled on which (if any) voice chat we'd use going forward. No sense in making people install/configure vent if we're going with teamspeak in the end (since several codexers already have TS installed).

Also, if we're 10-12 people for the GW2 beta alone, that's really going to be felt on a 30-slot server that others are using.

I have TS as well, just gotta say that last time I used it I got the impression that is sucks salted monkey balls. I bet someone will say the same thing about the Vent though, so I don't really mind either way.

I used vent back when me and some bussies were playing WoW. I'm using TS now for LoL. In my experience the two programs are about equal, although TS feels slightly nicer and took less yelling at my firewall to make work.

what exactly makes you think TS3 is salted monkey balls? It keeps network traffic fairly low. The voice quality is decent. It has a smallish memory footprint. You have a small text chat window for linking stuff. Everything can be neatly divided into a tree of sub-channels, where you can adjust settings and access individually.

While I'm not sure about traffic and memory usage as it's never been an issue to me, the text chat and tree subdivision is available for Vent as well now, the admin just needs to set them up.

And it was to do with quality of sound and some interface issues that I didn't like, can't quite recall it directly now, it's been over half a year at least. Just that I didn't like those.

Sound quality hasn't really been an issue on the TS server me, SV and phoenix mooch off of. (Well the voices are awful. But that's because of the people, not the software). There's about a dozen different codecs you can set TS3 to use, so I'm pretty certain it's more of a setup issue than any inherent difference in the software. As for the UI, I found TS3 less banalshitretarded than vent. But I think it's mostly down to shortcuts being slightly different than what I was used to. Again, the two programs are very, very similar.

Yeah... I keep hearing that. but noone I know uses mumble. Care to enlighten us on its virtues as opposed to ts/vent? :M

Supposedly sound quality is better. It's deffo good and clear but i haven't used vent/ts in quite a while so can't really compare.

Yeah, I guess it might have had something to do with listening to the so-called "chavs" mumbling and "joking" on TS rather than the sound quality itself. (I'm an admin/moderator for our raid vents so anyone saying three extra words usually is offered a cup of STFU).

And I think I might be recalling what it was - there was some overlay issue, I couldn't get the shitty thing to disappear for ages and it just kept popping up and showing me all the shit I didn't need. Really, what I want is push a button and talk, then let the button go and stop talking. Whatever software allows me to do this without having half the screen taken by bloatware is fine with me.

Yeah... I keep hearing that. but noone I know uses mumble.[/quote]

This. Nobody uses Mumble on our server at least, except maybe one weirdo guild I saw spamrecruiting.

Again, re: Vent, there's a bunch of codecs to pick from as well, and on our servers (we have 2) voice quality is good and pings are low, so I'm guessing it all comes down to what people are most used to.

The way I got TS set up for LoL it's minimized to the system tray. There's an icon (blue circle) that lights up if I'm speaking or turns into a microphone/speakers with a red diagonal slash if they're turned off. I bound mouse 5 (thumb button) as my push to talk key, and it records as long as I hold it down and stops when I release it. I bound mouse 4 (other thumb button) to toggle speakers on/off for TS if I'm trying to listen to something else. The application window is mainly used when navigating channels. It doesn't take up all that much screen real estate.

I'm not in beta. I don't pay for the privilege of doing the beta-testing for companies. Just sayin'.

And Ulminati's desciption of TS sounds good. I never needed more than skype :M
Willing to roll with whatever system you guys come up with. Since I don't live alone I'll probably not do much talking anyway...
