it's not impossible to make an escort mission with a vulnerable character enjoyable, RE4 did it in 2005.

What kind of alternate reality am I living in? People hated the Ashley sections of RE4. It's not even a comparable situation anyway, because RE4 is an action game. TLoU is a stealth survival game. Having the AI spot Ellie would be incredibly more frustrating because the enemy being alerted probably means a reset.
Yeah they probably could have found a system to work around it if given enough time, but since they didn't, they went for the choice that was best suited for gameplay, instead of the story. That was the point.

 

Hate is a strong word. People disliked Ashley segments of RE4 because they were hard, and because Ashley had annoying personality and voice.
However, the actual escort part was good - her AI was great, game never cheated by making her invincible/invisible, and managing fights with her around created a welcome challenge (that segment where you defend Ashley with a sniper rifle while she operates a crank to raise a bridge is one of the most memorable encounters in RE4).

It's not a "gameplay vs story" choice, it's not even choice at all. Of course they went for the "make her invincible, because otherwise it may frustrate players", it's not like could remove Ellie from the game and only spawn her during cutscenes, that would've been even lamer.

 

Of course it is a choice. They could've just said "fuck you, we want to be 100% consistent between story and gameplay no matter what - enemies can detect Ellie and her dumbass AI, enjoy it faggot" and because of it turn otherwise pleasant gameplay sections into fucking nightmares.

 

somehow i doubt her being an actual gameplay element was even in the cards.

 

They went for the option with the absolute least mechanical depth, the option that makes the game more of a movie and less of a game.

Also I hate RE4 more than anyone but even I can concede that the escort mechanics were well done. Ashley is competent enough to not require constant babysitting, but she is vulnerable enough that player can't entirely ignore her place in the game. She is a mechanical component of the gameplay, rather than a movie setpiece. Regardless of whether or not you enjoyed it, it is more of a game than The Last of Us.

And here's the ultimate thing, frustration is a natural response to most gameplay that has any degree of challenge. Keep removing stuff that players might find frustrating, in the interest of "preserving the immersive experience" or whatever the fuck buzzword they might use, and what you end up with is a movie with brief moments of interaction.

And if you're that afraid of frustration then you can just sit in your poopoo diapers and watch a movie all day, stay the fuck away from games.

 

I don't even know what the problem was for 'Humanity'.

Why did they need a 'cure' so desperatley that they were willing to kill innocent people? Why did they all live so miserably in a destroyed city? It's not like hords of Fungies hunted every last human around. Joe and Ellie could wander through untouched nature for hundreds of miles. Just grab two dozen people and build a defendable village, Fireflies.

'Murderous She-Hulk Golfers out for Revenge' might be a less stupid story than the first part, tbh.

 

So they basically want to make flash games with AAA budgets?
