ITT: EA marketing claims that ads make the game more fun, and that Metacritic is the de-facto, objective standard by which all games can and should be measured.

  3. Behold the fall of Gaming industry. Whether this assertion about Metacritic is factual or not its going to become a fact now with this advertising campaign.

You're a bit late. Metacritic already determines things like the size of bonuses and the royalties developers receive for their games, as well as their opportunity to develop DLCs and sequels. Developers literally make less money if their game doesn't hit say, 90, even if the sales are just as high, and have a greater chance of losing their jobs as a result. This practice has been going on for years already.

It's an abomination, especially when contrasted with the latest :incline: at Kickstarter and a few other places. Finally, we have living, breathing examples that show how things can be better - and it makes EA look real ugly.

    Yes.

True. But I believe that opinions are made by a few and permeate to the mass. EA advertising will be unopposed on any front, because there is NO ONE opposing it. This is not a unique situation per se, but puts EA in a very powerful position.

But only the 30-40 paid reviewers average score is to be considered, those nasty 3,377 users that gave DA 2 a 4.2 average score, and those 1,639 consumers that gave 5.8 to SW:TOR are just angry trolls.

    :hmmm:

Conclusion: If Codex really wants to make a difference, we need to infiltrate the game review sites and take over the metacritic scoring system.

That's actually a good idea. The problem is not so much the advertising, because everybody advertises, but the journalism that doesn't look at the game and the advertising from an objective viewpoint.

What would it take to get an official Codex review onto Metacritic?

    ^ Top
  11. By starting an alternate website for review system. Really! Its a damn good idea I was proponent of when I joined codex. The problem we have no common grounds to agree on!

It'd basically be impossible without a massive policy change. Metacritic only tends to include "reputable" sites and even then it's the big ones (i.e. highest traffic, which almost by default means the most heavily invested in ad deals with game publishers) that get the biggest weight in determining scores. Even so, I'm not sure RPG Codex would ever be allowed in simply based on its reputation alone. Even a bigger site like RPGWatch or GameBanshee would struggle to have its content taken seriously by Metacritic.

Less Codex-centric reviews and a numerical scale.

Edit: Also this, to a large extent.

Perhaps we can democratically elect some reviewers.

    So, let's keep brainstorming.

We (or somebody) start the objective, harsh Metacritic alternative. Allow other sites that have been mentioned such as RPGWatch and Gamebanshee.

  16. Are they really up to "hive-mind"'s level? We don't scale. I haven't had experience with them.

Codex going into mainstream gaming. That would make a hilarious comic serie in Dilbert style . But it would be an earthshaking:decline: if ever really happened.

The type of people who could do this are the well-spoken, relatively mainstream figures who are nevertheless on the borderline of "edgy", folks like TotalBiscuit, Yahtzee, Shamus Young...

The problem with that is that once you create a watered down Codex, the new watered down Codex will have less in common with the current Codex and more in common with the current mainsteam sites. It would simply become another cog in the decline machine. The whole "change the system from the inside" doesn't work because once you get inside of the system you become part of the system and it starts to be against your interests to fight said system.

The solution isn't to go fangirling "Metacritic, look at us! Metacritic, take us seriously, pls!!!" The solution, if anyone wants to do anything, is to just start an uncompromising review site and force everyone else to take you seriously by what you do, so that people say "Metacritic? Pfff! Lamers! Bought and paid for whores! Codex Reviews are the only ones worth taking seriously!".

    Hm, another idea:

User-driven review site. Anyone submits a review, anyone can then rate that review, and then highest rated reviews (perhaps with some editor opinion weight too) get pushed to the top. Kinda like GameFAQs reviews, but more prominent.

Note I'm talking about a hypothetical separate site from the Codex.

I'm not sure if the Wiki format would be considered reputable from the mainstream.
