D)…travel to βδ-6. Whoever the people who made that automaton were, they definitely visited that parallel.

Time for Wellerian choices and consequences!

Interesting choices opening up. The synthetic textile is more 'vague' as a clue than the box so might be worth finding out if Ajax has encountered it. Tough choice between βδ-6 and γω-6 but would like to check out γω-6 before diving into the automaton worlds.

Bros, the next update will be sometime next week (Monday or Tuesday most likely). I will need to travel around a bit so I won't have time to write it this week. So feel free to over-analyze,vote or flip-flop until I get back.

2.9 Quo vadis Hercules?

"I look like my great-grandfather in this." Paul comments as the two of you prepare to transit to βδ-6. He should be grateful you could get any clothes resembling the local fashion there. Anything less would attract too much attention. At the very least the clothes are comfortable despite being rather old.

*
A dirt road leads into the city. Farmers and other unsophisticated pass by you when you are traveling along. Most of them are using various types of carts and wagons. Some are pulled by horses and mules, other by human slaves. The sound of a steam locomotive can be heard somewhere in the distance.

The city itself is filthy, chimneys keep puffing out smoke while coal dust, dirt and horse manure litter the streets. You and Paul try to avoid stepping into some of it, however you cannot avoid the awful smell and air pollution. The architecture around is not what you expected. Most buildings are pieced together from mass produced concrete prefabs giving them a very bland look. The obvious exception to this rule are of course the houses of the local upper-class and public institution buildings.

Paul translates some of the signs around the city for you, it is a good thing they taught him some Latin at the medical university. "Buy Isaac's revolvers! Guaranteed to kill filthy thieves, rebellious slaves or unwanted missionaries! Only 23 solidi!" Guns? You have no need for primitive firearms.

"Craving women or men, maybe something exotic or with more than one person? The Coitus Maximus has it all! 20% discount for republic legionaries and mariners, come and enjoy what we have to offer in the port!"

"Candles? Gas lights? Outdated nonsense all of it! TASTE THE FUTURE, USE ELECTRIC LIGHTING! Yes, the newest achievement of modern science is now available in Caesarea! Inquire within the JUPITER POWER COMPANY offices, Via Augusti XIX." At least they have electricity, this reminds you that you will need to leave your filtering unit in a relatively deserted location.

Another one is written partially in Chinese, the Latin text below it is a poor translation. "Shanghai Trading Company, the finest goods from the Orient! Tea, porcelain, silk, jewelry. Visit our store in the Port district." That doesn't sound very appealing, the Chinese are one of the things you rather avoid if possible.

"Red Galleon Wine. The true patrician's wine! " At least now you know what the "sophisticated" natives drink.

"Will the superhuman Cassius the Bull end another foe's life? Or will his career come to a bloody end? WATCH HIM FIGHT EVERY VENUS DAY AT THE CAESAREA ARENA. Tickets available for 85 nummi." Venus Day is tomorrow according to what the Ahnenerbe database said.

"The spectacular CAESAREA ELECTRIC STREETCARS now travel from the Port, through the Forum, all the way to the Factories! Tickets cost a mere 15 nummi." It looks like you are not doomed to walk on foot everywhere after all. Now if you could only acquire some local currency first.

"Cheap rooms to rent! Via Galicia XVIII A."

"Need a drink or a bed for the night? The house of Liber is what you seek! Via Augusti XLII."

"Haulers needed, paying 35 nummi a day. Contact Israel Pera at Warehouse VII."

"Protect the city streets, the Vigiles are in need of able-bodied men! Join today!"

"So what will we do now Heracles?" - Paul asks, obviously unsure of what to do now himself. Getting some local currency could be a good idea. Although you are unsure whether you should actually earn it by hard work, rather than just mug somebody or break into a house.

There is also the wooden box, naturally you brought it along with you. Perhaps somebody will be able to tell you who was its previous owner.

Maybe you could try contacting the local government, sell them some technology perhaps. The container is still where it was after all, sure you told the Ahnenerbe interrogators about it but you never told them its precise location. Even if it was gone, you could try contacting one of your old suppliers. Assuming you can pay them with something first.

Regarding the subject of money, you will...
A)...assault somebody in a back alley and steal from him.
B)...break into a store at night.
C)...break into an apartment at night.
D)...join the Vigiles.
E)...haul stuff for Israel Pera.
F)...try to sell the wooden box at the Forum.
G)...do nothing.

You will hide the filtering unit...
1)...in the Port.
2)...in the canals.
3)...in the river that flows through the city center.

After hiding the filtering unit you will...
I)...try contacting the local government regarding a business proposal.
II)...investigate the matter of the wooden box in the Forum.
III)...investigate the matter of the wooden box in the Port district.
IV)...visit the local library.

Later, if you acquire some local currency, you will...
V)...watch the fight at the local arena. It sounds entertaining.
X)...visit the "Coitus Maximus" brothel. Hopefully they'll have decent cheap whores.
Y)...buy a newspaper and rent a room at "The house of Liber".
Z)...buy a newspaper and rent a room at Via Galicia XVIII A.

Vote now.

And here I hoped you wouldn't bring Paul along and Heracles would derp around with a german-latin dictionary in his hand.

On the work front, 35 nummi a day sounds like chump-change if a revolver is 23 solidi. I'll go for the Vigiles, even if it likely a bit more dangerous. D

2, cuse I dunno lol
I, hey no reason we can't make a nice profit while working for the Krauts

Mug some fat bastard using superior technology and the stealth generator, while teaching young Paul a valuable lesson about life in the multiverse; change the pattern of RGM refueling a bit; ask around the port - less official attention that way, and more smuggler bros to get along with; Cassius the Bull smells like a clue about androids and/or superhumans - and if not, we can always go full retard and challenge him to a fight. A proof-fool plan if there ever was one.

What stealth generator? You never chose to get the optical camo suit (you picked marksmanship training and the laspistol). Hell, you don't even have a stun rod anymore (a slight "punishment" for not telling that Ahnenerbe officer anything about Lemurians when Heracles got caught).

Current inventory:

Heracles: Structural Scanner, Adaptable Tools, Reich Heavy Laspistol, Reich Combat Knife, Wooden Box
Paul: Reich Medical Scanner, Reich First Aid Kit, Reich Combat Knife

For obvious reasons, Paul's stuff works the same way that its Atlantean equivalents do. The combat knife isn't as good as one made of adamantine but it's still better than a regular steel one.

Paul's CQC skills are lacking as is his marksmanship.

Oh and you brought some food and drink with you along with some spare native-like clothes.

For convenience's sake 100 nummi=1 solidus.

Breaking into a store seems more our style and potentially more lucrative than slaving away for a pittance in the militia. With our previous high-tech smuggling expertise I'm sure we've circumvented sophisticated security systems in the past, and this is early-electricity age after all.

B)...break into a store at night.

We have a man better at getting in where he is not invited than at kicking ass, lets take advantage of it. Heracles can detect and disable alarms etc with his stuff, right?

Provided Heracles isn't 1 point in sneak skill short of passing a Wellerian check, of course.

:M

2)...in the canals.

Looks like the least exposed option.

III)...investigate the matter of the wooden box in the Port district.

Considering how things ended for Heracles the last time he tried to make an offer to anything other than a modern Republic or at least non-extremist monarchy, you might as well avoid the best you can to draw attention from this even more savage and ruthless parallel lest this ends with Heracles crucified or something. Getting to the source of the automatons is the priority here and some solid clues might be found at the Port district.

Y)...buy a newspaper and rent a room at "The house of Liber".

Whores may lead to unpleasant long term consequences, watching fights may also lead to issues perhaps. Better to get a room somewhere that won't be as commonly looked after for suspects than cheap places.

Alright D/2/III won however we still have a tie between V, X and Y.

The next person can vote for either V, X or Y. What he picks wins. If nobody votes or flip-flops before 8 p.m. GMT on sunday, V) will win because it got 2 votes before the rest.

2.10 No habla

Six tall columns support the roof above the entrance to the Vigiles building’s lobby. The lobby itself is crowded, police clerks are busy running around with documents from office to office. But most people are simply waiting in queues. Some look like recent victims of crimes or the relatives of victims, angry or depressed by what has happened to them. A cacophony of cries, screams and the sounds of hectic pacing fills the chamber.

Eventually you locate a sign telling potential recruits to wait for an officer here. Outside of you and Paul only two other people are waiting there.

One of them starts talking, you don’t understand much out of what he said, just something about a slave. Well that and he seems rather excited. “He says he is a recently freed slave,” Paul translates, “well not exactly freed , his owner died and with no heirs the state seized his property including this man.”

“So now he has to work at least 3 years in the Vigiles before he becomes a citizen, the alternative was getting auctioned off and still being a slave.” Rather than make a profit by selling him the local government preferred to have him do police work? How short on manpower are they exactly?

Finally, an officer appears. He says something to all of you. “They’re going to teach us the basics and send us out patrolling the plebian quarter in the nig...” Paul is interrupted by the officer. He seems angry while Paul, embarrassed by what has happened, clumsily tries to explain something to the him.

Suddenly the officer starts looking at you menacingly, he shouts “Excedo!” at you while pointing his finger in the direction of the exit. “He said only civilized people speaking Latin are welcome in the Vigiles. I can stay but they won’t pay me until Monday...”

You told Paul what he should do and left the police station.

*

Following the embarrassing incident at the Vigiles station, you submerged the filtering unit in one of the city canals. Fortunately, there was nobody around to witness what you did. Afterwards you and Paul went to the port. It is a pity you’re broke, that fight tomorrow would have been rather entertaining if you could afford the tickets.

Flocks of seagulls glide above the harbor while men help haul goods to and from ships. Some of them are in chains, they are slaves no doubt. Bigger steam ships have their cargo unloaded using steel cranes, the local children observe the tall machines with fascination until the dock workers chase them away.

“You took the box with you, I thought you gave it to Ajax?” - Paul asks. You explain to him why you have the box with you.

*

A mob has gathered in front of one of the few buildings in the port that isn’t a warehouse. Two mobs actually, one is listening to some kind of speaker who keeps using the word “dominus” a bit too much. The other is shouting what appear to be vulgar profanities at the speaker and his listeners. The establishment they are standing in front of is the “Coitus Maximus”.

“He’s a priest,” Paul starts explaining, ”they’re protesting against this den of sin as they call the brothel. He says the politicians should abandon the false gods, embrace Jesus and abolish slavery because all men are born equal in God’s eyes.” A Christian rally? Well that is something you did not expect. “The other group appears to be formed by defenders of Roman tradition or something like that. They claim slavery, the old gods and prostitution are an inherent part of national identity and what the preacher calls for is barbarism.” This sounds all too familiar to you.

After a moment, a tall man comes out of the brothel. He looks mean and tough. He starts yelling at the Christian protesters, the preacher and the crowd ignore him. A few other men, as menacing as the first one, come out of the establishment a moment later. They’re all armed, two with guns while the rest with clubs, pipes and other blunt objects.

The preacher decides to leave rather than risk bloodshed, he gives you a pamphlet on the way out. “Via Galicia XXXIVB, Western Caesarea Christian Society. Come and learn more of the Lord and his love. Meet fellow brothers and sisters who embraced Jesus! Learn how you can help in turning the Fourth Republic into a Christian state by fighting slavery, alcoholism, sexual depravity and paganism.”

*

Most people Paul asked around, had absolutely no clue as to where to look for somebody who would know where the box came from. The few that did, suggested you to visit the Shanghai Trading Company and ask there.

Crudely carved into the outer wooden walls are Chinese pictograms, which make the otherwise deserted-looking and equally crude shack stand out. A short east Asian male greets you inside using broken Latin, his name is Cheng. You on the other hand greet him and introduce yourself in perfect Mandarin. “A Gwailo can talk like a civilized person? Tell me, what business do you have in my establishment?”

You show him the box, he gazes upon the carved silhouettes of demigods and gods. “Decent craftsmanship, looks expensive. Worth at least 30 solidi, but I am not interested in buying. I only sell things here, fine things from the homeland.” You don’t want to know how much it’s worth, you want to know *who* could have made it or sold it someone, or who could have bought it.

“One of the local patricians of course, who else would pay over 30 solidi for a chunk of fancy Gwailo wood?” He does make a point, does he have any leads as to which patrician would? “Don’t know, the only patrician I deal with is Lucius Bucco. He buys porcelain and jewelry from me. Rich man, very powerful”.

Rich and powerful he says? Who exactly is this Bucco? “You new in town Gwailo? Lucius Bucco owns the vineyard outside of town, his family made Red Galeon wine ever since they settled on this continent. Well the two hundred slaves they own do, the Buccos just reap the profits from their toil. He lives in the Bucco family villa near the Vineyard, it used to be visited by powerful friends of the family in the past, even senators. New patricians stole influence from them, many rose to the top by opening factories. A sign that the balance of power is shifting.”

You will…
A)…visit the Vineyard and the Villa. See if Lucius Bucco or any of his slaves knows something about the box.
B)…check out the Caesarea Christian Society. They seem like a decent bunch even if they want to ban whores.
C)…ask about the box around the forum. Somebody has to know something there.
D)…visit the library. They got to have some recent press there.
E)…contact the local government. Show them some advanced tech and propose a “partnership”.

You will get money by…
1)…breaking into a store at night.
2)…breaking into an apartment at night.
3)…mugging somebody.
4)…breaking into the Bucco Villa at night.
5)…hauling stuff for Israel Pera.
6)…selling the wooden box.
7)…not getting it. You have no need for local currency.

You told Paul that you have the box with you because…
V)…you do not trust Ajax. The totenkopf soldiers and his fascination with the automaton gave you good reasons not to. As did the tortures you endured in New Swabia.
X)…Ajax sent you here to investigate the matter. How were you supposed to do this without the box?
Y)…Himmler wants this matter to be investigated without Ajax’s knowledge. He fears Ajax may have an agenda of his own, one different than that of the Fuhrer.
Z)…he does not need to know why. You will tell him he should know better than to question his superiors.

Paul will…
I)…join the Vigiles.
II)…not join the Vigiles.

Vote now.

Just FYI, if you decided that Paul joins the Vigiles he meets up with Heracles at the port after some basic (short) training. Otherwise he helps you with hiding the filtering unit.

He will only go out on patrol (or not) after the update. This means that if you do something in the night (all other actions unless specified will take place "tommorow") he won't be able to assist you.

Forget the vigiles, not much better than the manual labour option in terms of raising little money for a lot of effort. Let's make use of our skills (and scanner, adaptable tools) and raid a store, then we will have currency to get around, rent a room if needed and for bribes if necessary. This Lucius Bucco character must be worth checking out too.

A 1 Z II

If we are breaking into a store then Paul's meagre salary from the vigiles is not necessary. He may be of use in keeping watch and helping out.

Losing Paul would hurt because only he speaks Latin. It's pointless. Stop voting for stupid options FFS.

A)…visit the Vineyard and the Villa. See if Lucius Bucco or any of his slaves knows something about the box.

The investigation on the automatons is the primary reason to have gotten into this parallel and they are too savage to be reasonable businessmen anyway. No need to risk having a "friendly chat" as bad if not worse than the one with the Nazis in a parallel too primitive to have anything truly worth.

IMO Heracles should be looking for the underdogs in parallels, as they will be more likely willing to make good deals because they really need it. Countries losing wars which have just a few months left before suffering a clear defeat, would-be revolutionaries, countries suffering economic meltdowns(supposing Heracles can get his hand in industrial technologies that could fix that) etc that would give everything they could for the tide-changing access to technologies far beyond their time.

Any place where it seems a single government has total hegemony is a bad one to make deals because they don't really need superior tech now that their Pax Romana is already on, unless there is a stubborn fringe somewhere trying to change that, which provided with Atlantean gear would be able to vaporize legions outnumbering them by far and defeat their once far superior enemies.

Like the Christians, which hopefully could be more than a bunch of preachers and hopefully can be reached later despite not being picked up right now.

Just considering they will only be able to afford it after they have toppled the existing regime, make sure to have them swear by their souls, to hell be damned should they break their oath, to honor the deal and pay the agreed amount for it.

2)…breaking into an apartment at night.

That is part of the expertises of Heracles and what his tools are good for. Doing it only once and being smart enough will prevent trouble, and hopefully he won't have to stay for much time in this paralle. Stores could be more dangerous but potentially more rewarding, while pissing off the only possible lead is a definitively bad idea.

X)…Ajax sent you here to investigate the matter. How were you supposed to do this without the box?

Considering he got his clue on Lucius Bucco shortly after, it is an entirely reasonable explanation.

II)…not join the Vigiles.

I have a bad feeling about doing otherwise and it is not worth, really.

What do you guys think about the apartment versus the store as a target for our burglary?
