The 2010 Codex Top 5 RPG's

(For the tl;dr ADD version, just scroll to the bottom).

Hello my many friends! A while back, I honestly wondered if some of our new darlings, say Mask of the Betrayer, Mass Effect or even The Witcher might make it's way into the hearts and minds of the codex in a list of games they love, and possibly upset or change the balance of the Holy Codex Trinity™. So I decided to make a write in poll. The previous 2 times we did this, people provided their Top 10 list. I decided to shake things up a bit and really make you think about your choices. What was the method to my madness? Our resident 3 balls, 2 dick I think summed it up perfectly:

Picking the first three was easy; picking the last two was very hard.

That was my point exactly. It gave you that FFFFFUUUUUU moment and made you really think.

Just a bit of history and we will move on....

Back in 2005 Jed and Vault Dweller compiled a top 10 list from fellow codexers and the top 5 games were:

1. Fallout
2. Planescape: Torment
3. Fallout 2
4. Arcanum
5. Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

And the hivemind was happy, and continued to twiddle it's thumbs waiting for new cRPG's to someday replace this list.

Then in 2007 Lumpy asked again too what our thoughts were now, since a few new cRPG's had come and gone, and would the codex change? The results were:

1 Planescape: Torment
2 Fallout
3 Arcanum
4 Fallout 2
5 Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn

Apparently our beloved MCA classic moved to first place this time and this list provided what we now know as the Codex Holy Trinity™ (Torment/Fallout/Arcanum). Of note, it is the SAME 5 games both times, just the positions have changed.

It had been 3 years since then, and Drog alt's come and go and I wondered if some of our new beloved cRPG's might actually break up our top 5 games. With the much beloved Gothic, Mask of the Betrayer, Alphaturd, Dragon Age Romance Simulator etc... could any of these new games perhaps change the nature of the codex? Or possibly change the Codex Holy Trinity™?

Without further adu, I bring you the top 5 games as voted in the year of our Lord 2010 by you, the codex Hivemind:

1023_falloutcoversmallhalf.jpg

Fallout
Developer: Interplay (Soon to be Black Isle Studios) Publisher: Interplay 1997

Fallout, Fallout never changes, and is always on our top 5 list of games. This time the King jumps back to the First Place slot. Seriously, I firmly believe that even when furiously masturbating to Tranny Porn with one hand, our other hand is firmly grasping a copy of our Beloved Fallout. We fucking love this game. It has a wonderful Post Apocalyptic America, Mutants, The Master, Brotherhood of Steel (with none of that fucking Steel Be With You shit!), Power Armor, this is the one that stared it all.

Planescape: Torment
Developer: Black Isle Studios Publisher: Interplay 1999

Taking a step down, the codex's most loved Teen Heartthob Chis Avellone's wonderful Masterpiece heads to the second position. Even at second place, The Nameless One is still a staple dish on our top 5 gaming plate. Featuring walls of critically inducing text that could even put Wyrmlord to shame, it is truly a beautiful masterpiece and a lovely tale of personal exploration.

arcanumcover.jpg

Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
Developer: Troika Games Publisher: Sierra On-Line 2001

The first cRPG made by the now defunct Troika Games, again continues to conclude the Codex Holy Trinity™ and comes in third place. Love it or hate it, the majority of the Codex Hivemind loves this little gem. Set in a Fantasy world of Magic and Technology (Steampunk), the player travels throughout the land to uncover an unfolding mystery about himself.

bloodlinescover.jpg

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
Developer: Troika Games Publisher: Activision 2004

The last game made by our beloved Troika Games comes in fourth place. It's got Vampires, multiple ways to complete missions, and the best fucking playthrough of a bat shit crazy insane Malkavian ever done by man in a video game. Dialogue and setting are wonderful as well. Set in present day America, you travel on a journey as a fledgling Vampire and uncover a Mystery that might certainly bring an end to your kind.

fal2coverhalf.jpg

Fallout 2
Developer: Black Isle Studios Publisher: Interplay 1998

The second of the Fallout series comes in at fifth place. Much longer a game than it's predecessor, Fallout 2 continues our journeys in a wonderful Post Apocalyptic America, and discover the truth behind the Vaults.

bg2coverhalf.jpg

Baldur's Gate II
Developer: BioWare Publisher: Interplay 2000

Bioware, home of the old codex poster Mr. Gaider, who killed and raped Warden's entire family, falls from the once solid fifth place (from previous polls) and drops from our top 5 and comes in sixth place. Still loved by many here, it unfortunately did not have the votes needed to keep it in the top 5 games we love.

And that's it, the Hivemind has spoken! In 2010 the Codex still proclaims it's undying love of The Codex Holy Trinity™ (Fallout/PST/Arcanum) and shoves it in the face of them popamole console tards.

So I have found the answer to the question I was wondering. The Codex continues to hold it's unwavering grasp on these top 3 games. You will have to pry them from our cold dead hands. It was however interesting to see Bloodlines slowly inch it's way up and topple the long time number 5 position. Granted the vote was very close, I think the codex has gotten bored of Baldur's Gate and now loves this Vampire Masterpiece.

If this list has somehow sparked a fire in your pants to play these great games again, be sure to drop by the codex's own The RPG Mod Repository for a listing of Patches Mods and other things for these great games.

And here is the ADD version:

1. Fallout 122
2. Planescape:Torment 110
3. Arcanum 68
4. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 61
5. Fallout 2 59
6. Baldur's Gate II 58
7. Mask of the Betrayer 33
8. Deus Ex 33
9. Morrowind 29
10. Gothic 2 28
11. Ultima VII 24
12. Wizardy 8 20
13. Jagged Alliance 2 18
14. Temple of Elemental Evil 12
15. Daggerfall 11
16. Wasteland 10
17. Realms of Arcania: Star Trail 10
18. Wizardry 7 9
19.Baldur's Gate 9
20. Neverwinter Nights 9

I hope you enjoyed 2010's Codex Top 5 list, and thanks for voting!

Special thanks to Jim Cojones for finding the links to the 2005 and 2007 polls!

Poll has now ended period, as of 7/5/2010 1:35PM PST.

Also interesting to see the big drop in votes from FO/PS:T to the next 4 games. Then the big drop again after those.

Wow, it is almost basically the same. Not surprising at all. Such a disappointment. It would've been interesting had the top 3 had a new game in it.

By the by, these lists are always depressing. The same Top 5 RPGs of all years every year. It's wrong. So very wrong. No one is making good RPGs that could stand toe-to-toe against these titles, and that's not a good thing.

Ah,
Somehow that made me feel soo nostalgic.

It's a shame that neither Wizardries nor Ultimas made it into the top 5, though.

Yeah, no one made a game that can beat a flawed but still great 1997 cRPG in fucking 13 years. Fucking :decline: .

Oh, but they did. Four years later, too.

And it barely made it to the twelfth place around here :decline:

Bloodlines in the Top 5? Really?

So much for the Codex being elitist.

Yeah while I find the Wizardry (6/7/8) and Ultima (IV/V/VI/VII/VIII) fantastic, I love them but not enough to bring them with me to my Top 5 grave when I die.

Though Ultima VII and Wizardry 8 are in I guess a respective 11th and 12th place. Sad but at least they are in the top... 20.

Let's wait to do another poll like this when most of us have died. Then maybe the votes will change.
