Live-action trailers for video games always seemed dumb to me. This one's no exception, but I bet they had fun making it. :)

Is that a big foamy glass of beer on the console at 0:32? Of course it isn't, but just let me believe that it is.

Screw you guys. If they made a Wasteland 2 in the mid-90s in the CD-ROM FMV era, it totally would have had an intro like this.

The other options would be either no trailer, a CGI trailer for 2-3 million+ dollars or a cheesy yet very cheap CGI trailer (possibly even done by Prosper). What would you prefer?

Or just some classy narration with still images.

What games have had "narrated stills" for an intro? I suspect that it would be widely regarded as cheap, low budget, evidence of Wasteland 2's "Russian shovelware made by amateurs" status, etc.

Did they say if they were planning to include ways of going rogue without killing every civilian you approach or going guns blazing into Ranger Citadel?

Athelas Not so fast! The BG2 intro has a 3D animated segment at the end. And even the "stills" themselves are animated. I thought you were talking about a Fallout ending slides type of thing.

It's not a terrible intro but there was... zero impact watching it. The biggest thing is "oh hey, they're doing some live action stuff". Otherwise it's completely forgettable. Boring voiceover, boring writing and a cameraman with Parkinson.

Honestly? I'd prefer something in-engine. It's OK for a trailer for a game to look like the game. Simple CGI, say 2D animation, would be fine too.

This did not cost a million dollars.

Are you being deliberately obtuse? The 'animation' in the BG2 intro is extremely basic (zooming in on the pages and some light/saturation effects). The 'real' aimation is about 10 seconds of that book opening and Irenicus appearing. It's basically an FMV consisting for 95% of artwork.

And what, the amateur live action one is going to win an Academy Award or something?

No, but at least it's cool and different.

Anyway, as I said, I was thinking about the completely static Fallout ending slides type of "narrated stills", but sure, you can be fancier than that. I don't think that would work nearly as well outside of a fantasy context with those cool looking illustrated grimoires, though.

It's like you intentionally fucking forgot the Perlman monologues from Fallout.

That trailer's pretty cool, and the narration too. I'm really glad they went with something different.

I wonder how mainstream journalists will react to this kind of intro, though - much like many Codexers in this thread, they don't seem to like FMV, if Tesla Effect's reception is anything to go by.

It's not a trailer it's a mood setting piece that will be in game.

Also, I think it's pretty good.
