Interview with UbiSoft's Dominic Guay at RPS:

Character progression confirmed:
...the player will build up his abilities. He won’t start out being able to do everything. Obviously, for the purpose of the demo, it was kind of a late game moment. You have a lot of abilities built up. There will be a very realistic reason behind his access to the city – how he can grow his power gradually. It’s going to be the player choosing where they want to put those efforts – on what type of control, how much he wants to invade the privacy of whom, and what he wants to do with that information. It’ll be the player who chooses that.

Open world and C&C confirmed:
It’s definitely going to be an action-adventure game at the heart of things. Every player is going to play differently. It’s an open world, and every mission objective has different ways of pulling it off. You saw how he got into the [art show] center by doing something very subtle – hacking the system. He could’ve also stealthed in through a back door or barged in through the front. So some players may want to play very violently, and some others might want subtlety and control. Obviously, we’re going to give you options to use all of those things, and you as the player – depending on your type of approach – are going to be able to mix that up.

And, of course, the E3 demo was on a PC:
Yeah, we’re running on PC at E3.

I have no interest in weabo console games, so I don't even know whether Pimkin 3 is on PS3 on Wii U, but I wholeheatedly agree with you about Watch_Dogs and Dishonored being the few potentially good games among the piles of shit on display at this E3.

Can definitely see the AssCreed influences. I like the Big Brotherly approach, kinda neat.

Doesn't seem like it brings anything new to the table. It even kinda looks like Saboteur.

Saw a funny comment string yesterday. Paraphrased:

"So, this game teaches kids to kill innocent people to reach your objective and to kill enemies who already surrendered? Wow..."

"Game is rated M"

"B-but kids will play it anyway"

Maybe by the time this gets released on the PC, Ubi will come to their senses. Given how schizophrenic they are when it comes to DRM, one can never be sure. Let's just hope we get lucky with this one.

I'd rather play this type of game where you don't really involve yourself in direct combat, or if you do you're not an elite killing machine. Would prefer to pump fake info into system to have person arrested then your crack team can intercept and you can go interrogate in a van somewhere. Would make coordinating/timing more essential, but oh well.

I agree. My interest in Watch Moles decreased dramatically when the cover-shooting began. I just can't stomach this anywhere else than in campy Sega games.

The thing about shooting while in cover is, that you'd likely do the same in real life. Since the whole game industry is all about realism the days, don't expect the protagonist shooting around in the open like a maniac without taking cover. Not cool realistic.

Realism is fine. It's just that in RL you don't consistently run into situations where there are boxes lying around and the instant you hit the right place, a bunch of guys start shooting at you. And shooting. Rarely if ever throwing a grenade, or not acting like retards.

The thing about cover systems is that they don't work this way - you get a cool cam behind your ass and are able to observe the enemies and even pre-aim without exposing yourself so it's just the matter of infallibly popping out when they have their pants down while already aiming at their mole.

Also, UbiDRM.

And it's all this dude's fault: Cliffy "I invented the over shooter genre" B.

Whatever he's working on now, it will set a new paradigm shift for future games.

Actually, realism about cover would be a welcome thing, particularly in Watch_Dogs. Bear with me here for a moment.

So, in a real gunfight, you really don't want to get stuck in the open while someone else is shooting at you, so the intelligent thing to do is find cover, ASAP. Now, going into cover has its drawbaks, namely that, if you hunker down behind cover, you lose situational awareness because you can't see what your opponents are doing. I couldn't give you exact percentages, but a large, if not overwhelming, percentage of rounds fired in a prolonged gun battle are fired in order to supperss the actions (movements and ability to shoot accurately) of the opponent so that you can either move in, flank him/them and fire that few rounds that actually make the difference, or so that you can get an indirect fire solution (mortar, artillery support, close air support) and blow him/them up.

The problem with popamole shootan games is that when you go into cover, you have no penalty to your situational awareness whatsoever, sometimes it's the complete opposite, being able to rotate the camera even more when you're in cover. Now, in Watch_Dogs, you're supposed to be a hacker in a city riddled with surveillance technology. That means that you, if you developed your character appropriately, you should be able to hack into the surveillance network and gain access to real time surveillance feeds. You could get camera video feeds, location estimation data on the devices carried by people (enemies included), maybe even some IR, thermal or ground radar feeds coming from some loitering drone or Police helicopter. What all of this means it that they could model cover realistically, making you lose the wide field of vision when you hide behind cover, but, if you're a good enough hacker, you could hijack some of the cameras around the battlefield and see what your opponents are doing, thus realistically solving the lack of awareness gameplay problem and, at the same time, make it all work and feel coherent and realistic.

Edit: a really cool subversion of the whole cover shooter trope would be to make cover penetrable if the shooter has the proper gun & ammo combo for that.
