The Witcher gets a bit of cred for me just for having actually mediveal-looking environs.

    This.

All in all, a bit on the short side, but oh well.

After they announced this trailer through another you'd think they would have something more to show.

Since I can't edit my other post, here's a working version of the trailer that'll probably get taken down by Viacom shortly.

That bit where the King shows up looks absurdly good, probably CG.

Visuals look good, but we knew that already. But how heavy on DERP is this going to be? That's what matters.

Well, considering that TW games are derp-free as far as action RPGs go I can say that chances for a good sequel are pretty good.

Yeah I'm still not holding my breath for an Open World game with a narrative as strong as TW1/TW2, and since narrative/characters was the main thing going for The Witcher (beyond the visuals), well...

In TW2 CDPR proved to have problem with understanding certain keywords, such as tactical, True-RPG and Open World (which constituted a substantial portion of their hype). The thing is the end result was still very satisfying.

You can rest assured that if there are going to make some concessions they will be at the expense of everything other than the narrative. Their writing team enjoys pretty high esteem within their ranks.

Sadly this also means that the world will be half-open with little stuff to do in between areas, it will be actiony as hell (considering the game is going to be released on the new consoles) and there will ba a rift between (excellent) storytelling and (mediocre) combat. Which is no biggie for me.

Although, TBH I am concerned that there really isn't any footage from actual combat gameplay segments illustrating how fighting plays.

That combat-cam was disappointing. Looked much too close to Geralt to be "tactical."

Shit trailer, the previous one was way better, save for the silly kung-fu combat at the end. This one gives too much of a "generic, crap fantasy game" vibe.

Nothing hurts the quality of a "realistic" low-fantasy setting more, than overexposing fantasy elements. ASOIAF/Game of Thrones is a good example - the whole thing would be far more interesting, if it focused solely on politics and got rid of all the in-your-face, fantasy crap, like dragons and zombies. Same goes for the Witcher.

Fuck y'all. Looks fantastic. First day purchase. Hell, I'd trade my Wizardry, Goldbox and Ultima big boxes to get my hands on Witcher 3 a few hours ealier. Great preview, great music, everything is looking very Polished.

    GET IT? Polish-ed.

    :yeah:

Only needs to have Geralt domino-kicking them into a river to turn them to stone and the Day 1 purchase will be a guaranteed.

At least the fantasy elements in the Witcher are more mythology based, and heavily influenced by Arthurian legend, which makes them (in my opinion) feel more at home in the setting. But yes, I hope they can balance the Wild Hunt plot with the political intrigue well. The first game mostly succeeded in not making the fantasy elements feel out of place, but there were still some quite rough parts, for example the sudden switch from the city chapter to the whole thing with Dagon and the Vodyanoi felt quite abrupt (I think it was the transition between chapter IV and V, if I recall).

I think mentioning ASOAF is very spot on as it has this problem. I love fantasy in general so I don't mind fantasy elements at all, but the Others/White Walker plotline always felt out of place to me, like it was not properly integrated with the rest of the storyline. I don't really mind the dragons, though.

This, although I suppose it'll be tuned up in the final bombastic high-fantasy Return-of-the-King-esque free-for-all written after Martin's death by Parris McBride and her cat.

Also I don't find Witcher that much low-fantasy, what with all the elves and dwarves and all those monsters, it's certainly way less low-fantasy than ASOAF. Although tbh I did picture the King of the Hunt to be more wraith-ish in appearance than this half a ton Ironman-Sauron crossbreed.

Except so far, the main story did not revolve around supernatural stuff. This doesn't seem to be the case this time.

Witcher's 2 ghost battle sequence was borderline Bioware. I fear they may go full-retard this time, since they have a higher budget to recoup.

The previous games used fantasy elements as plot devices, not as the plot itself. The main villains were a nazi templar leader and a bro-witcher, whose agenda accidentally collided with your own. Now, we have a fucking lich king...

I take you haven't read the ASoIF books then

There is not a great focus on magic and even with magic and red priests it's still all related to politics

Are you aware of the fact that the whole thing is basically a huge masquerade, bro? The Wild Hunt is not actually related to the folk myth, it's a bunch of impostors using the myth to mask their activities. The dude only looks like the lich king because that's what the king of the Wild Hunt is expected to look like.

The true derp here comes from the fact that they're really elves from another dimension. That's not really an overload of fantasy elements though, just plain derp, and inherited straight from Sapkowski. After all these years, I still have no fucking clue why he introduced this nonsense.
