Future interactions with the father mainly include: finding him under a bridge and reading his suicide note on failure as an bridge troll.

Or then he has been possed by a foul artifact of the ages old, the Pumpbra. The once loving father has now turned to degenerate beast, bent on harassing women with bra's and posting pictures of his loot on 4Chan.

    Maybe. Maybe not!

All McGuffins, can't be helped. But at least those two were stories of the entire place you'd been raised in, and in both cases you were selected and kicked out, "go deal with it."

Fallout 3? Your father leaves and the game makes you choose to follow him. The whole "Overseer's thugs" angle isn't cutting it for me, that's the opening. You love Liam Neeson and follow him.

There's a weak main plotline, like Fallout 1 and 2, and there's so weak it becomes annoying, like Fallout 3 looks to be.

Impossible. Portal was good all the way through, albeit short and tad easy on the brain cells.

Bethesda have many times professed a desire to make Fallout 3 their "plot based" game as opposed to ES sandbox style play. They forget that Fallout transcends both definitions.

I bet it ends up being like FEAR, where there is "OMG sup4r secret plot twist you nevar saw comgin!!!" and you're forced to side with the bad guys.

    Oh, and:

Is fucking retarded if you've got this tinpot dictator as Overseer. It's a bit of a stretch to let a single person "escape" the vault, but it's fucking ridiculous to let it happen a couple of times in quick succession - especially if the motivation is "just curious". You're going to have half the vault walking out for "just curiosity" and the overseer is going to do to great lengths to put down that sort of exodus.

I had a mental image of FO3 protagonist going "Ooh... What does *this* button do?" over the vault door controls.

They obviously have limited alternatives in mind/impulse, and therefore, they will likely be producing the most supremely hyped, 3D eye candy FPS clickfest ever, for mass mechanical consumption by the shallow and repetitive sheeple.

Sparkling, shallow, cllickfestian indulgence for the juvenile and conformist twitchfestian pea-brains, viewing targets thorugh their 1-eyed straws, and destroying those targets in order to merely acquire more difficult targets.

    Obliviout.

Don't worry, there will be cash flood requests for graphical tweaks and upgrades in the animations before it's final release.

It will be like a movie, going over budget. They will simply make up for it with more media hype and retail monopolization.

    Metagaming sucks.

The difference between "Find Daddy-O" and "Find GECK-O" is metagaming. The GECK is circumstance. The character doesn't have a choice.

The Daddy thing isn't circumstance. It's a roleplaying decision, but instead of letting the player roleplay his character, the game does it for him.

It'd be different if it was a background story & not something the player was forced to slog through. Prefab background stories aren't the pinnacle of roleplaying setups, but at least they don't per fucking definition destroy the illusion of playing a role. They just restrict the sort of role one can play.

... There used to be all sorts of magazines running articles about just this sort of thing. If some of you have any lying around, it might be an idea to scan a couple & send them to BethSoft.

Heheehe AhaHaHaha.. Like they'd give a fuck.

The search for his father seems like a personal quest to me. And its a good enough reason. When was the last time anybody complained about why The Nameless One was on a quest to find out who he was?

No harm in some linear gameplay.

in some - yes. but in F3 it's too linear.
in PS:T we have a choice how we will find out who we are.
and what if I don't want to like Liam Neeson? but no - the game will force this love onto me.
