    At least, if you go by the scores: <a href="http://www.gamesradar.com/pc/torchlight/review/torchlight/a-20091104113625828034/g-2009100517263770009">9/10</a>, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/torchlight-review">8/10</a>, <a href="http://www.giantbomb.com/torchlight/61-25983/reviews/">4/5</a>, <a href="http://www.game-over.com/reviews/pc/Torchlight.html">80%</a>, <a href="http://gamerlimit.com/2009/11/gamer-limit-review-torchlight/">8.5/10</a>, <a href="http://www.incgamers.com/Reviews/999/Torchlight-Review-PC">9/10</a>.
<blockquote>A town atop an endless dungeon that’s randomly stitched together as you play. Hundreds of enemies that die in a torrent of clicks. Scrolls. Health and magic potions. Quests. Leveling. Loot. More loot.
    [...]
In the wake of Torchlight, the web's filled with guys offering variants upon "I thought I'd play it for an hour before dinner, but when I looked at the time I discovered I'd starved to death because I'd been playing it for three million and twelve years."
    [...]
The best thing about the gameplay is the inclusion of a mandatory pet--a cat or dog that you can name--for every class.
    [...]
The mining activities have stirred up creatures living in the mines and being the adventurer type you take on the task of seeing what can be done about it. It’s a thin if serviceable plot.
    [...]
Because of the accessibility of the skill trees, combat feels fresh and is greatly enhanced
    [...]
One of Torchlight’s most appealing features is the gear - there’s so much to pick and choose from, and due to the fast and frenzied nature of the gameplay, the loot can drop at a phenomenal rate.</blockquote>

It's an OK timesink, but even D2 or Titan Quest beat it at atmosphere.

    It doesn't work that way.

When scoring a game, most publications score it relative to other games of the same type.

So in Torchlight's case, it would be in relation to games like Fate, Titan Quest and/or other budget / casual games of the same era (or in some cases, year).

So when a game site (for example) gives both DA:O and Torchlight say a 9, that doesn't mean they are equal (you can't really compare them - apples & oranges), it means they're worth a 9 in their respective categories.

It might be... some folks have more stomach for twitch combat then they do for gritty larping. Others love to larp and when they do they want it to be gritty. It's really subjective.

Yeah. This is why magazines will score an NFL game a 9.0 or 9.5, knowing full well that no one will give a !@#$ about it in two years, unlike the RPGs, fighting games and whatnot soring the gold medals. They're saying it's one of the best football games out there, not that it's as good as Twilight Princess or something that they'll rave about for years.
