Sprites, yes. But sprites made from 3D characters which were animated and then rendered as a sequence of images. It really takes a lot of time to work with sprites. Each weapon or armor or whatever you want to show on a sprite requires a different sequence of images, for example. Or a different sequence for each direction in which the character can move.
Definitely would not be more expensive than, I don't know, Far Cry-level graphics, but likely more expensive than what W2 has.

    Edit:
And I'm not sure exactly what you understand by sprites, but they really don't necessarily mean "hand painted". You wouldn't get that amount of detail on hand painted AND animated sprites. It's just insane and nobody would even try that.

They should hire the guy that does STASIS for doing the graphics, or do a similar style

I'm sure he'd be more than willing to ditch his project to go work for inXile :retarded:

Fuck no! Leave the STASIS guy alone, so he can finish STASIS and then finish his PA RPG.

Then he can go work for inXile.

I'm pretty sure Fallout's character sprites were made from 3D models.

If memory serves, Fallout 1 character work was done by doing high-polygon count 3D animations and rendering them down to 2D sprites.

That aside, it seems like some people think that W2 looks like it does because inXile doesn't have good enough artists when it's likely a decision based on quite a lot of factors. I'm quite sure that if they could afford to work on it in their free time, for as long as they want, like the "Stasis guy" does, then they could get the same level of graphics.

I don't make that assumption at all. My suspicion is that it's more about systems and what they're used to. A lot of companies are probably in a place where they'd have to figure out a pipeline and best practices for doing something like this again, even if technically, on an individual basis, the artists are fine with it.

I doubt it was fairly affordable even back then, just more affordable than either fully hand-painting it or not being able to sell the game since computers able to handle the 3D environments in real time were essentially unavailable.

Today you can directly use the 3D work but that wasn't an option back then.

Also the rendering time back then took days, as opposed to hours now.

I sort of agree with you, it doesn't really matter that they were modeled, animated and rendered in some 3d app, what matters is that they're tweaked to be 2d in game, and ooze way more character and style than the full 3d equivalent.

the postures, poses, deathkills, everything somehow looks more real, raw and gritty, because its simple and catches the idea.

Plus Fallout talking heads put sad 3d facial animations to shame. :obviously:

IIRC he wanted to work with inxile on Wasteland 2.

Yeah, it's interesting that computing power has improved in the last 15 years, but graphics somehow look less realistic. I care more about gameplay and story, thought, so I'm not worried.

How about ditching talking to oneself in third person, royal "we" in every f`ing post?
How about controlling marketing self entitlement a bit?

Where does it say its a stretch goal?

"Variations on this question also asked by Rehvenge4 and Manaf82.] This is an important question. We are looking to create a style/feel that is reminiscent of PS:T, but we’re still exploring what approach we’ll use. The answer will depend in part upon what funding level we reach with Torment – we are looking into various options and their required resources so that we can have realistic goals (and make realistic promises) for the game’s art. (While of course we want to make the game look as great (and “Torment-y”) as possible, we’re not going to shelve the project if we aren’t able to afford the graphical approach we would all really want.)

(Yes… I read an interview with Tim in which he downplayed his role on PS:T, but having worked with him some, I suspect he understated his contributions. =) )"

Shadowrun Returns looks great, better than the muddy-green blob that is Wasteland 2.

Personally, I prefer a subdued palette to a My Little Pony-inspired Skittles palette.
