Kalypso has been giving Destructoid, IGN, and Gamespy sneak peaks at how Tropico 3 is coming along. From Gamespy:

Being El Presidente isn't all about how you work with your own people, though, as Tropico 3 takes your relationship with the outside world into account, too. The developers on-hand regaled me with tales of times when they were doing splendidly within their own borders, but since they failed to maintain a good relationship with the U.S., they were invaded by warships and overthrown. Trade and diplomacy adds another tier of complexity to Tropico 3, and players have to be savvy about how their country deals with (and looks to) outsiders. Leveraging precious resources, such as oil, can get you a great deal of money -- but it can also piss off someone wielding a bigger stick than you can handle.

Freedom isn't free, don't mess with Texas, mess with the bull you get the horns etc.

I don't know, some of the screenshots reminds me of Simcity. Except with lots of jungle trees just across the street.

The guys making it are the same ones that did the Grand Ages: Rome game which in itself was not bad, tried to move the genre forward but had some really unfortunate design decisions. They aren't the most talented bunch, but they aren't mindless franchise rapers either. We'll see.

Crossing fingers and toes and hoping they don't botch this through incompetence. If the sum total of their involvement is to update the engine for purty graphics and leave the gameplay as near as possible to the original, I can't see it failing. Stasis is the new progress :D
