But even the rocks look worse. The more detail they have the more you notice the repetition.

That's true. But still, the level of detail and color is such an improvement.

Good tilesets try to avoid that effect though, Look at this screenshot, for instance, the floor/brick wall tiles use different patterns.

Perhaps that particular tileset just isn't very good? But generally speaking, high-res tiles can look amazing. Case in point: Battle for Wesnoth. Or, hell, U6 at double res.
