It depends on your build, really. I'm having a PSI-Stealth character, who put one point too much into AGI, and using Thought Control as her primary PSI and Psychokinesis as secondary PSI, and zero on Metathermics (the points are instead allocated into Social skills). With Tranquility and Premediation, she can ambush enemies, whether loner or groups, and combo crowd control and damaging spell, and could even go through 2-3 turns of enemies not even retaliating at all.

However, I can see where Psychosis could work nicely in compensation to the extra psi cost. Like has been stated, mainly using damaging spells and especially AoE damage ones like Pyrokinesis would work nicely against groups, since I can't see how one would utilize it to full potential using Stealth/ambush approach.

Pure PSI of both types (Psychosis and Tranquility) is great for that because it's among the most powerful, and you don't have to worry about micromanaging ammo, traps, weapons, etc.

Absolutely agree. I play PSI for the very same reason - when inventory management start to tire me, it is always PSI.

I've played this for an hour. I don't like it. I don't like
    • the lengthy, dull dialogue
    • the slow walking speed
    • the health sponge rats that take 5+ bullets (i.e. more than one turn) to kill randomized fail loot that strongly encourages reloading even though I'm usually one to just roll with whatever I get
    • the narrow corridors that prevent me from sneaking past all the rats
I guess it's ultimately a good thing that I never actually purchased this properly. Of course that means I can't get a refund. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    That.... 'lengthy'?

I shudder to even think of trying to read dialogues in PoE if Underrail's is 'lengthy'.

It's still early game, ffs. If you can't stand having to fire a pistol 5+ times in early game, make PSI/Melee build instead.

You just sucked at timing your point-n'-clicking.

Lengthy dialgoue? Seriously? Do you have the attention span of a 2nd grader with ADHD?
Walking speed slow? Do you want to cruise through the maps in mere seconds or what?
Rathounds need 5+ bullets? What are you doing, throwing cotton balls at them?
You cannot even sneak past Rathounds? Are you retarded?

Cmon dude, I thoroughly enjoyed Underrail but the walking speed is a fucking travesty. If I can comfortably play the game on 5x speed in combat areas something is very wrong, it's by far the most complained about feature in the game.

Amout of damage you able to inflict associated with your effective skill, and with 5mm pistol - yes, rathounds are bullet sponges, it's the same as poke them with a pin.
Get a 0.44 dunno, see if it changes.

Looks like you are not very interested in this game, because well....

Aimed Shot, Recklessness, 10 Per, 15 Guns -> 2-3 shots on average, just tested it out.

Of course with no decent Per, no Gun skill and no Aimed or Reckless or Expertise, yeah Rathounds take a bit but then you have not made a character fitting for guns and should have gone either knives, PSI, or something else and you can usually buy a crossbow for the gun and armor(which is garbage anyway).
That being said that's only the very first 10-15 minutes at worst of the game, more like 5-10 if you know what you are doing, with the 450$ reward you can easily buy a much more powerful gun. Properly build charcters kill stuff like Rathounds in one round burst after level 6-8 or so.

But hey, killing 20 rats in Fallout 1 in the first cave was so much more exciting and oh yes do not deny it almost everyone did it for the piss easy experience they gave getting you half way to level 2 in just a few minutes. Oh and since most smart people will save ammunition they will melee them to death wich was not any fastereven slower yet I have never heard anyone complain about it.

Most maps are pretty small and you can already walk through them in a matter of 10-15 seconds easily. With a higher walking speed stealthing through enemy infested areas like Depot A would be a fucking braindead joke. The only area where I could accept higher walking speeds are safe areas like SGS, could make something like a city walk toggle but I'd rather see more character build option, new areas, expanded quest lines like Gorsky in Core City, etc.

I looked at the psi powers, I don't like any of them.

Some rats could be sneaked past. Others could not, e.g. I could see no way to sneak past the rats at the station where you have to put the thing in the thing and had to kill them all. I also have 15 points in stealth and 9 in agility.

Reasonably certain I can't afford that.

I have aimed shot, 9 per, and 15 in guns. I doubt 1 point in per is going to make a huge difference, and I'm not interested in taking recklessness.

Aimed Shot usually takes out 35%-50% of a Rathounds HP and you can finish them usually off with 2 normal shots, 3 if you are unlucky. The idea you need to shot them MORE than 5 times on average just does not add up and I have played this game for 300 hours and countless characters.
So I ask again, how do you manage with a gun centric character to need more than 5 shots, or in other words 6+ when I can kill them in 2-4 on a regular basis with the only difference that I have 1 more Per on my Gun centric characters.

    Go Melee then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just wait a little bit longer, there's always an opportunity.

Or, you know, use the element of surprise. I made an Assault Rifle Juggernaut build who had to use pistol at that time, like you. But I shoot the rats just fine, wiped them all with some effort.

Actually, it is. Also, what build you want to make with just 9 PER? Pistolero build?

There's a usfeul sneaking trick: enter turn based mode and sneak. I've used this countless times. It may still not solve all of your problems but it will help.

Well, if you don't like it you don't like it, but if you're still fighting rathounds in the north caves you haven't even gotten to the real game yet. Let us know if and when you capture a hopper.

    95% chance to hit:

    Aimed shot: 12 damage
    next: 8
    next: critical for 17
    next: 6
    next: 9

    See? Five shots.

    Next rat coming up:
    8
    9
    10
    6
    miss
    8
    miss
oh whoops I forgot to heal up, died, but that's at least 8 bullets right there.

The damage is random, pal. I guess in your 300 hours you've only received the best rolls, or maybe you don't remember all the bad ones.

Melee doesn't seem like a playstyle I'd enjoy either.

    I did. Still too fiddly.

    :hmmm:

The difference between 21 and 22 is negligible.

That let me get into the building, but I couldn't get out without getting spotted.

Again, it's still pretty early in the game. Like you seem to imply, you just got bad rolls right there. It wasn't that the rats are bullet sponges, it's that your weapon suck and your skill still suck at the time.

Then you just sucked at timing your point n' clicking. How the hell did you even likes top-down isometric turn-based cRPGs, then? Or maybe, you don't?

Again, what kind of build you want to make?

An assault rifle/sniper build would require 10 PER from the very start. If I'm not mistaken, every point put into PER onward would provide more significant bonus to the total amount of Guns skill. And with all the points you can get in Guns, it will also increase the damage dealt by the weapon.

Ah, there's the problem. Seems like you're using a silenced weapon to complement stealthy approach. Sadly, silencer modification actually reduce the damage dealt by the weapon, and on top of that the guns are still shitty in early game.

Tell you what, drop the silenced pistol and get the unmodded one. Aimed Shots and your attacks in general will hurt much more. And let them come to you, there are a lot of choke-points in the cave around the building where you will put the power-core.

    Also, wear your armor!
