I'm suprised there's no topics on this yet. Well, as the saying goes, since I'm in hell, I might as well hug the devil...

So, I never played any visual novel (ok, just Three Sister's Story when younger, it was popular in Brazil :P ), should I? And if yes, which one?

Summoning Hirato, Jasede, Haba, RK47, Vaarna_Aarne, Mrowak, Crooked Bee and the whole j-gang.

I've actually never read any visual novels.

    (Unless Codex LPs count)

Because it's a visual novel and it's good. It's also rather light on sex, and it kinda makes sense with the relationships of the characters. Else try the Phoenix Wright games if you're a prude.

Edit: oh, fuck you and try Maiden Rape Assault: Violent Semen Inferno. That one has no pr0n at all.

I had to google to believe that's an actual game title!

And I'm not a purist against sex, is just that as a newcomer to the genre, I google the titles and all I see are sex scenes, I gotta wonder if you guys are trolling me or it's just the internet being retarded...

Good luck with that. Finding a VN without naked people is like finding a hollywood movie without a romance subplot.

That said, I haven't read many of them. Fate/Stay Night is light on the sex but the story and writing is awful anyways. Which is a shame because the setting is pretty fucking cool.

I saw Haba & Mrowak praised Kara no Shoujo, and also read somewhere on the codex about KiraKira having a good story, are those or YU-NO a good start?

I really liked 999: Nine hours, nine persons, nine doors.
A bit more on the interactive side because it has a few puzzles but it's still pretty much a visual novel. The cast not being all romance options heroines was a really good thing, at least for me. Actually I think they were only 2 or 3 girls so the majority of them were men.
Think SAW but cooler. It was really fun.

I was actually thinking of creating the same thread but, given the current flow of events om this unholy subforum, It was only natural for someone with a bigger post-count to immolate eventually :salute:

Many VN feature sex, the trick is that some use it as the main attraction and others treat it as something that naturally occurs in the story, and sometimes it feels that it has to feature sex just because it's in the list of specifications. I assume you're not interested in the first category, so in the second I'd suggest stuff like YU-NO (probably the best of the genre; the scope is simply amazing), Kara no Shoujo, Kana Little Sister, Crescendo, Season of Sakura or Divi-Dead. The quality and amount of sex vary greatly, some try to be about slices of life with lots of humour, some are about horror, and others plunge deep into existence.

We should make a separate topic sometime about the many beefs Harlan Ellison has had over the years. The man is basically the gangsta rapper of geekdom.

Okay sir, I'll take a look at Y-U-NO then. :salute:

We had a short debate about that when the Dreams with Sharp Teeth documentary came out, IIRC...

Isn't that Dreams with Sharp Teeth, re: the Ellison documentary?

YU-NO is great but might be too overwhelming for a start, so if you'd prefer something lighter, I'd suggest Season of Sakura or Crescendo. YU-NO was never officially translated in English but the Japanese version is somewhat easily available (there is even a copy of the iso on UG) and there are translation patches available.

I'm playing this one, it seems to be pretty good actually and no sex whatsoever.
The cast is still predominantly feminine except for the 2 protagonists, so there is a little bit of romance but the game is not always bugging you with that.
I still liked 999 better although I've just finished only 1 route in ever17.
    Definitely interesting.

There is always vndb.org. Huge database of visual novels and you can filter out the porn ones. There's no "no romance" tag as far as I'm aware though :decline:
I'm sure the list of vns without romance and/or porn would consist of a single digit of entries but it'd still be great.

There is also a japanese version with no pr0n but unfortunately that was never fan translated. Though I guess if the game was not intended as an eroge then it's fine. I will most definitely try yu-no out once i'm done with ever 17 and kara no shoujo.

Well, it's not like I'm averse to pr0n. :smug: More seriously though, if the sex fits the story I don't have much problem with it.

    As my presence was requested...

I've only ever played the Winter Wolf VNs.
They're western VNs that try really hard to imitate the Japanese style and presentation and ultimately fall short, producing something I suspect puts a lot of people off on the art alone; It's not quite Japanese enough for the average weeaboo, and it's "too cartoony and cartoons are for kids" for the greater majority of Westerners.
They also feature writing that ranges from bad to average, without quite reaching the levels of Mass Effect.

So, in conclusion, I can really only recommend things the codex likes, such as Saya No Uta.
And as a proper Codexian with an interest in VNs, you should've already played that. :obviously:

EDIT: It would appear that WinterWolves are shifting away from the manga style in their more recent titles.

Same here, problem is not having sex, problem is just having sex and story becoming completly pointless... japanese Mass Effect I need not.

Yeah, I think the greatest problem with visual novels is the cast consisting almost always exclusively of girls. That way it is a lot easier to make sex fit in the story.
Or to make the story fit in the sex.

Yeah, VNs are quite heteronormative, now that I think of it. Maybe it's all a plot of the cryptopatriarchy.

TBH, if I were willing to do that much reading of cheesy plots revolving around harems I'd rather play an erogame with an actual game attached, like Rance or Kamidori or something.
