I really don't think that if you take old ideas and implement them into new technology you'll get some stagnant nostalgia product. Legend of Grimrock showed how things change, if not for the better at least it becomes different, when old ideas are put into new technology. I also doubt they'll remake their mistakes, Wasteland had a lot of dubious skills for instance and I doubt they'll look to re-iterate these flaws for the sake of satisfying the fans.

At least the good RPG's are so flawed, due to being ambitious, that they have no genuinely tried and true ideas to go on. Even the D&D system, tried and tested arguably into ad nauseaum, is never implemented quite the same in each RPG that uses it, and never all that well (ToEE excluded).

Point is, innovation is a buzzword with little actual meaning; is Dwarf Fortress or Cave Story innovative? But I see no reason they'd avoid or be somehow naturally crippled by their endeavor to improve, alter and adjust--build on--the original notions of Wasteland. I also doubt Fargo is looking to satisfy a marketing concept such as that of a target audience, at least until the game comes out and turns out to be rubbish I have found no cause to doubt Fargo's reluctance towards AAA-ideas.

Sounds butthurt to me. Devoid of personal motivations and opinions... who the fuck cares that it would have to be mentioned? It's like saying that the players in FIFA are devoid of any personal motivations and only follow the player's directions. Some people just don't understand that not everything has to follow the same formula.

Also, what Renegen said. It's bad that they don't have preset playable characters, but preset NPCs are also bad. :retarded:

Innovation is indeed a buzzword, that does not make its meaning empty however. Innovation to me, is to just try new shit out. I would much rather that a game try something new and fail, than remake fallout or PS:T for the nth time. But I digress. We'll see how this game turns out. And grimrock is indeed an example of a game, with little new, but still excellent.

Fair enough, but we now need to define what 'new' means to you. I'm sure there are many old works out there which would provide you with an experience once beyond your imaginations. They could do something really innovative but it would only be innovative to you because you didn't play the old game who's concept or style they were 'inspired' by.

I'm just trying to make an argument for how ridiculous it is to mention this sort of thing at all. Under mild inspection this concept of innovation turns flaccid due to being a concept so general it refers to nothing, like calling something thought-provoking.

Trying something new often turns out as slapping a gimmick on a much simplified version of something old. Then if someone wants to go back to the full mechanics of the old stuff, they are accused of not innovating like the former example and being stuck in the past and wanting to take gamers back out of emotional nostalgia. Why can't Wasteland 2 learn how to objectively create a compelling and modern inventory system like Mass Effect 3? What's with the off-putting UI on the infinity engine games, Bethesda did it right with Skyrim, my skills are fucking constellations and not a mere number, this is what freshness feels like

Isn't the definition of new pretty clear? Example for clarity: MI3 tried something new with a quite striking departure from the art style and graphics set by monkey island 1 and 2, great success! MI4 with 3d graphics, not so good in terms of feel of the game: But I'm still glad they tried.

But if a change in art style made it adequately new to you, meaning adequately innovative, then how can you hold doubts as to Wasteland 2's likelihood for innovation?

Simplifying mechanics is undoubtedly innovation and catering to modern styles. Changing art, well you just have to keep ramping production value for each sequel or make it multiplatform and lower production value(you're busting your chops to port it for these entitled gamers and negligible sacrifices have to be made, like reusing assets) and cite a new change in artistic direction. You have to frame innovation properly or people won't see it when they see it, LoPan.

Because, as I said: Much of what he writes strikes me as pure fan-service, and I have problems seeing how very much of the game's development can be driven by much creativity, when at least parts of the game development is decided by popularity polls. How quickly he retracted his social media idea, which would be something new for the genre, is also telling about how brave he is.

But let me be the first one to say this: I could be wrong as fuck, it's impossible for me to tell, as I know fuck-all about the game so far.

    Stop farming Brofists sgc.

And yes guadaost, I can't say I expected this to end in anything other than 'we'll just have to wait and see' because that is entirely the case. Though unless we speculate and argue how can we ever become sufficiently disappointed?

I don't think I can find a smiley that comes even close to describing the massive amounts of incline the document contains.

The wikipedia article sounds butthurt, alright. Lke meltdown said, I've never seen Shepard described as "devoid of personality". Maybe it doesn't sound so for native speakers, but to me it has this negative / condescending tone.

Tbh it would be nice if playing as a good guy actually required you to act as Batman instead of the Punisher for once.
