Just for shits and giggles, I played a few minutes of Ass Creed Unity (Gold edition with all up-to-date patches and DLC) last night in french with English subtitles (yeah, before you ask me what I've been smoking, the answer is "yes"). Anyway, it still runs like ass on my my GTX 1070 in ultra high. If I can't run a 4+ year old game on Ultra with a GTX 1070 at a lousy 1920 x 1080 with no FPS jank then they need to get the fuck out of my game queue. Paris does look nice though in Unity, though those red enemy blips that respawn on top of you can kiss my taint. Bad game. Play only if stoned and bored beyond belief.

This dude thought he had seen ghosts. Never seen Westerners before. Thought they were ghosts as I said, but he just suffered from blood loss and he was high. So he wasn't mad. Convincing him that he wasn't lets the party go forth on their adventure. He has nice ship building knowledge.

Before that, I need to get back best girl, Shui Panpan. He has disrespected her and thus, he must die.

And thus the threat of Marka Ragnos in Jedi Academy was thwarted via multiple blaster bursts to the face. Tavion is hilariously pathetic compared to Desann in Outcast, she just keeps spamming sabre throw and making herself vulnerable to blaster fire, or does some weirdo thingamajigs that let you jump on her head for free and sometimes score a knockdown.

Also, this time I managed to finish this game exclusively with guns, which I couldn't do before. It required quite a bit of cheesing/metagaming knowledge though, especially in the penultimate level, because your ammo counts transfer from there to the final, and since the final level has only TWO ammo pickups (and they are ROCKETS, which are super-useful in a place crawling with dark jedi masters) as well as a bunch of stormtroopers right before the boss, it's prudent to conserve ammo. Lightning 3 helps a lot with the tarded IDDQD-spamming reborn fortunately, so I could get to Tavion with 200/200 spare blaster/flechette ammo, and that was enough to take her down no problem.

All the Assassin's Creed games run like ass at ultra settings, even the latest one on a 2080. Turn down a couple random settings to high though and they run tons better.

Well, I'm sure that's the case for the post-Assassin's Creed III ones, but I could easily play all the early ones on the highest graphics settings (maybe it wasn't called Ultra back then however) and they ran completely smooth even on my old GTX 660 Ti. Black Flag was the AC title I distinctly noticed for the first time running kind of clunky at Ultra. Sometimes I think it's a cpu issue with Assassin's Creed Unity since it only gets choppy when I'm nearby multiple groups of enemies fighting (and there were a LOT of them), otherwise it's pretty much constant 60 FPS on my rig. I remember this happening even as far back as Oblivion when I played it years ago - very smooth until I'm in a huge free-for-all then the stutters cometh.

I honestly haven't played one since Black Flag, I just watch a lot of benchmark videos. They're all heavily CPU limited yeah, and they have random settings like "cloud detail" which tank you 20 frames on ultra. If you watch a performance guide though you should be able to get a solid 60, unless you're truly CPU deficient (like I am in Hitman 2 I think, sad face).

Finished Fallout: New Vegas. Played it for 42 hours.

This game just confirmed what I've always known: I don't like "alternative history/present post-apocalyptic" settings at all. I avoided these kinds of settings (and games) before. The reason is mostly due to aesthetics and the "feel" these settings have and invoke, I view such settings and their aesthetics as ugly, and since aesthetics is a major component of quality and enjoyment for me, that means playing these kinds of games is rarely satisfying. Almost everything is more or less ugly, brown and yellow, decayed, people look (and are) dirty and unkempt most of the time, the world - along with its individual parts like landscapes, dwellings, miscellaneous objects etc. - are all dirty and modern (i.e. ugly) too. The "funny" wallpapers are just disgusting and boring too, portraying a type of cynical and sarcastic "optimism" which I have no appreciation for.

Although my initial impressions of other things in FNV were mostly bad, I have to say that - notwithstanding what I said above - that there are some interesting locations like the Hoover Dam, the NCR HQ and the Legion HQ, some Vaults were very interesting especially that one which experimented with plants and mushrooms (very haunting atmosphere there, complete with excellent music and ambient sounds), then there was that location with ghouls and space rockets etc., many interiors are very believably made and seem complex enough but not overdone. Overall, I'm pleased with the interiors' designs, and some exteriors are good too.

I said it before, and again I will say that some things in this game feel too "gamey" and "unbelievable" even from the perspective of the world in question. Just one of many examples here is the fact that one of the casinos in New Vegas city employ a (non-feral) female ghoul as a "bartender"; I don't know how that ties in with the fact that such casinos and New Vegas as a whole are focused on profits, but there should be inverse correlation between profits and such employees and such places of their work.

The "choices&consequences" thing is mostly well done, there are multiple solutions to many problems and even solutions often give several options on how to achieve them. I've seen that personality/speech/barter dialog checks are the most frequently used, which means that if someone wants to role-play a charismatic talker he can get many things done that way. Too bad, for me at least, that I didn't really care for many of the solutions, the characters generally felt dry and shallow, mostly "colored" by the faction they belong to. Ultimately, I chose the "independent New Vegas" path and have destroyed both the NCR and the Legion, and have left a number of factions to their own devices (super-mutants whom I didn't care about as one such example).

Oh, and one thing I noticed is that even if I was obviously in an open war against the Legion for instance, having killed a number of them, and was vilified by them, for some strange reason looting their various crates, footlockers and other containers counted as "theft" and I regularly lost "Karma" because of it (I don't even know what's the purpose of this "Karma" here, it didn't seem to have an effect on anything).

~~~
From 1 to 10, going as objectively as I can and disregarding my dislike for post-apocalyptic settings of this kind (even though I don't think this dislike is wholly subjective, in fact a lot could be said about it but not now), I will rate this game as 7 out of 10. Which means decent, worth playing if there are no better games around.
If I am to rate it more "subjectively", and taking into account how I experienced its post-apocalyptic setting, then I would rate it 4 out of 10.
I think I am definitely done with bothering with Fallouts, Wastelands, ATOMs and whatever other similar games exist. For me they will always be bad games, despite their objective strengths in areas other than aesthetics and the "feel" of the world.
I installed Geforce Experience a while back and just for a laugh I let it select optimum settings for AC: Unity and was amazed that it still selected Ultra High for my GTX 1070 with just a few settings turned down. But it runs much smoother now with many elements & stationary NPCs on screen during chases, though admittedly I haven't hit any heavy action areas with ton of NPCs around me kicking each other in the balls since the beginning of the game. So yeah, it's probably cpu-issues that chokes & stutters my rig a bit when shit gets real.
I decided to go through the final level in Jedi Academy again on Toxic Avenger: Cancer Sprayed With AIDS mode, aka dark side ending, for that perfekt kompletion.
First it meant killing Rosh though, which immediately provided many lulz.
"Jaden! Let go of your anger!"
"Why? You said yourself the dark side was powerful."
"I was wrong!"
"No. YOU WERE WEAK!" *zap*
In the subsequent fight against Tavion's twilek apprentice, I first retreated a bit to pick up a shield booster and medkits. The dark jedi then decided to jump off into a chasm and die :lol: I was surprised this could happen, because for example you can't throw her down into lava with grip - she always bounces off an invisible wall to prevent that.
Then came Korriban, which was now crawling with both reborn and jedi masters. I was expecting the worst, but actually it turned out much less cancerous than I'd remembered. The trick here is to maximise the in-fighting among the jedi and reborn - while they are fighting, you can easily sneak some blaster headshots from behind and make the mopping up easier for yourself. Taking the jedi head on is an exercise in futility though because of protect + absorb. Protect basically cancels out ANY damage you do (fuck this shit) while absorb cancels lightning and prevents you from throwing them around with grip (fuck this shit^2).
Some differences between enemy placements in light and dark side endings provided more laughs. For example there's a section with some burial chambers carved out in stone. In the first one I run into three jedi masters. "Ah, but there should be three reborn just around the corner," I think to myself, and rush ahead, only to find three more jedi masters in the next cave. So I took the angry conga line even further to the next room, which is flooded in lava, and burnt them all to a crisp one-by-one with grip.
Another unpleasant surprise awaited me before the end - light side ending has a mob of stormtroopers guarding the entrance to the final tomb. In the dark side ending, all of them are dead, which means even less ammo. Fortunately, I still managed to retain roughly the same ammo counts as last time (200 blaster, bowcaster, flechette).
Tavion was as pathetic as ever, but more lulz came again in the cutscene where Jaden is supposed to cut her down. That's because the flechette I killed her with transferred to the cutscene, so instead of slicing Tavion with a lightsabre, Jaden bashed her over the 'ead with the flechette.
... and then came Kyle.
Kyle is a monster. He's even tougher than Desann, because he's even more of a cheater. Not only does he have shitton of HP, infinite force and way more powerful push/pull that he abuses all the time to throw you around the place, he also has Force Wrestling to smack you in the gob, and also has faster movement than normal.
I shot all my remaining flechette rounds into him, followed it up with a few rockets (if you're smart, you can still damage him with those before he can push 'em back), and eventually brought him to like 15% hp left. However, you can't just twiddle your thumbs because he can use Heal. And since he can also put up protect/absorb, that basically means IDDQD on top of endless regen if you allow him to do that.
So in the end I popped RAEG for IDDQD for myself, ran into his face and exploded my remaining two rockets point blank and followed them up with berserk blaster bursts until he finally hit the dirt. I won with 1 hp left.
Thus ends the Kyle Katarn marathon, which I started at the end of April with Dark Forces. Not too shabby.
in Persona 5, I’ve reached the third palace. I’m thinking about doing some grinding here. No matter what I do, I’m always strapped for cash during social periods. I have to either choose to buy equipment or items or spend money on activities. I can’t afford all three. At least I got the doctor social skill up to level 7, which gives you a discount. Maxed out Ryuji as confidant, because he’s always in my party. I got to admit, while I don’t regard the characters as great, there have still been some cool and some funny moments. Overall, it’s still a good game, I suppose.
In Tale of Wuxia: TPS, I think that I am 3/4 done with the game, if not more. This is without a doubt my GOTY so far. One could either say that I love the dialog despite the translation or thanks to the translation. It’s hilarious at points (in the best way. You’r basically free to explore any place that opens up on the world map. It starts out a bit linear, but that’s mostly to set up your adventure. After the first few hours, I’ve been all over the place, recruited a crapton of people and managed to complete more quests than I can remember. This game is packed with content. Find quests that get added to your journal, find events based on which characters are in your party. Find random events on the world map based on the rumor system or fulfill smaller requests that don’t get added to your journal.
Combat is still really fun. I’ve managed to get a game over or two. The game is not easy. You can’t just use abilities willy-nilly, imo. There are tons of effects that you can take advantage of, or watch out for. Some encounters will be 1v1 and some bigger story encounters will be 20v20. Most common is that you will deploy 6 from 9 party members. You need to kick active team mates out for new ones, but you can always get the kicked team mate back. I think you can recruit 25-27 characters all in all. I’ve managed to recruit 22, I think. Anyway, the game uses hex based grids, which I like. Planning your positioning can be really beneficial. In most fights, I approach the enemy with caution, but in some encounters, I move in quickly if I think that I can defeat a possibly very dangerous enemy. Turns aren’t based on stats, it’s your turn, than the enemy turn. I’ve had some real nail biters, where I thought that I had lost, but a counter attack, evasion or immortality(Avoid damage for a certain amount of attacks) kicks in. Seriously, if you like the Wuxia setting, this is a big must play.
Bravely Second demo. Man, this is longer than some games. Took me 7 hours to finish. Did everything it has to offer. It’s just like Bravely Default, good job/combat system, poor writing/characters. Now that the demo is done, I just need to finish up Heroes of Ruin, and then play full version of Bravely second.
Pool Panic is mostly a silly pool game that can sometimes get infuriatingly annoying. I’m playing this in shorter sessions, when I don’t have time for one of the longer games.
Mercenaries Saga: Will of the White Lion. I bought Mercenaries Saga Chrnicles, which includes 3 games. WotW is the first game. I can best describe it as Final Fantasy Tactics Lite. The job system differs from FFT. Each character starts with a base class and can then get two new classes at tier 2. At tier 3, they unlock 4 new classes. That means that each character has 7 classes to play around with. Each class has 5 skills. Combat works mostly the same as FFT, but turn-order here is that you go, then they go. I’ve found the game to be fairly challenging on Normal mode (there’s also Casual mode). Enemies hit like trucks, so be sure to buff up or debuff the enemies. This has helped me a lot. There are ”Free Stages” that you unlock after every beaten chapter. I’ve played each free stage once, to get some well needed cash/exp/SP. SP is the JP of off FFT. Use it to upgrade skills and unlock new jobs.
There’s no world map, and the story doesn’t take up much of your time. The game flow goes:
Pick Story or Free Stage from the menu>Watch some scenes>Fight>Watch some scenes>Upgrade characters>Pick story or Free Story... you get the point. I see that it hasn’t got very favourable reviews, but I’m having fun. A lot of said reviews says that doesn’t reinvent anything. Fine by me, I say.
Just Cause 3. I’m playing this when I just want to have a chuckle and stir up some shit. I don’t even know if I want to finish it, it’s mostly a palette cleanser. Blowing shit up and using your suit to glide or just messing around with your sling hook or whatever it’s called can be surprisingly fun.
Heretic (TBD)
Finished Heretic.
Heretic II was one of the games of my childhood so I decided to play the original for historical reasons. Considering when this game was released (1994) I had a good time with it. It is quite rudimentary but I found it relaxing, playing a couple of hours every day after studying. It's essentially a fantasy clone of Doom. Every weapon is analogous to a specific weapon from Doom (e.g. Necromancer's Gauntlets = Chainsaw). Likewise, the level design is classic Doom. The items are a nice touch though. I especially liked the Tome of Power (enhances your weapons in different ways). The gameplay is nothing crazy, classic switch chaser. Also I liked the music and thought it was funny in a good way.
Will probably do Powerslave next.
You've inspired me to give it another try for the first time since its release. I loved everything else about the game, but the translation somehow being worse than Tale of Wuxia's was just too much of a disappointment for me back then. I was actually fine with the original's translation until about the halfway-mark, where it became what is essentially the machine translation we find in the Prequel. I've been so excited thinking about replaying Tale of Wuxia with the hopefully eventually released UI and Translation Overhaul Project (which has just been confirmed to still be in the works at the end of that thread), but I figure if the Prequel gets anything like that, we won't see it for another 5-6 years (if ever), so I figured it was time to bite the bullet and enjoy the game for what it currently is: tons of fun, funny, but fairly difficult to understand at times and a completely unprofessional release.
The Firemace is not comparable to the BFG-9000 in several ways... primarily because it sucks.
Nah, do Hexen first instead if you haven't already. There you will start to see radical departures from the Doom formula.
Just finished Raptor: Call of the Shadows. I could never finish it when I was a kid, and kept coming back to it but never completed it as something more interesting caught my attention. A finally sat down and burnt through it in a day on the second hardest difficulty, and honestly, it's OK for what it is. It's pretty hard until you get the auto-target machine gun/laser, then you can easily rake in the cash until you get twin lasers and roast everything. It's unfortunate that a lot of the other weapons are so weak, it really defeats the purpose of having an arsenal to choose from. The bosses are also a bit forgettable, with most bosses in Episode 3 being a bunch of turrets.
I'm currently playing through Quake. I spent ages trying to get the music working, until I realized it had been working from the beginning, it's just that the 'music' is ambient sound. I was expecting this as soon as I started the first level, but it only plays during the ending of each episode. Bummer. Does Quake hold up as a FPS today? To that I'd answer... an resounding Yes! It's just fast paced FPS action without any frills. Level design is pretty good, especially for Episodes 2 and 3. A minor thing that I really enjoy is how the guns (particularly the Super Shotgun and Super Nailgun) sound like roaring thunder. It's even better when you're blasting through stuff with Quad Damage. I'm almost finished with Episode 4, and am looking forward to the expansions.
Crime lord guy wants this cornett thing. There's another one that was lost in the old city. While in old city I uncover mural with spaces for them. I get both cornetts and take them to him. Picked up Hexen actually.
The gameplay is vastly expanded and more challenging, featuring hub-based level design with improved verticality and symmetry, as well as puzzles and respawning enemies. I started a Mage playthrough and was delighted you can freeze enemies with spells and shatter them. Quantum leap over Heretic everywhere, I love this game already.
Yeah, I was blown away by that when I first played it. You can even use frozen statues as obstacles, which I hadn't seen in a FPS up to that point.
Just finished Day's Gone. Pretty fun game. Liked the stealthy stuff.
Hordes are bullshit, only did the story required ones, but otherwise, I enjoyed it.
Got all 4 "secret" endings....not very secret if you ask me. Just played the game normally and got them all, I guess.
I just finished my first playthrough of Severance: Blade of Darkness (aka Blade: The Edge of Darkness). I played as the knight, finished the game twice, once without all the sigils and then a second time with the sigils going all the way to the abyss and the true last boss.
Honestly, one of the best game I've ever played. The combat is just so good. It's not just hard, it doesn't just have depth and a high skill ceiling. It is adaptative, allowing for a variety of different gameplay styles. I struggle to think of a similar game that pulls this off. The fact this was an inexperienced Spanish dev team's first game is kind of absurd.
The game gives you more tools than you'll need for any single fight and pits you against some nasty opposition. You can keep your shield up and circle strafe around the enemy Souls-style, sure, but the short dodge, the combos and the special attacks open up all sorts of different approaches.
I have to point out that, from what I've read and experienced by playing a bit of the barbarian's first level, the knight is probably the best character gameplay-wise. He has the shield, good combos, good range, fast enough to dodge. It's the complete package.
It's a game from 2001 and I wouldn't have noticed it except for the low poly models. Despite the simplicity, they pull off some cool levels and nice vistas. The pseudo Persian/Egyptian locations that show up later in the game look simply gorgeous.
My only real criticism would be that in some later levels (the forge, dal gurak's tower and the abyss) they throw in some platforming challenges that - while not prevalent enough to ruin overall experience - just don't fit in very well and expose the less than brilliant jumping mechanics. There are bugs, didn't bother me much.
Each of the four characters has an exclusive first level and I'll definitely at least play those before moving on to another game. I'm tempted to replay the entire thing as the barbarian.
